Stags sign versatile wingman
mansfieldtown.net, Fri 11 Sept 2020 We are delighted to announce the signing of experienced winger Stephen McLaughlin from Southend United on a short-term deal. The 30-year-old began his senior career in Ireland with Finn Harps, before moving to Derry City in 2011. After two years with Derry, he made the switch to English football, moving to Championship side Nottingham Forest. McLaughlin made his Reds’ debut against Leeds United towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign, appearing against Bournemouth and Brighton in the same season. Loan spells at Bristol City, Notts County and Southend United saw him gain valuable experience, before a permanent move to the Shrimpers in 2015. https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2020/september/stags-sign-versatile-wingman/ The winger made over 150 outings for Southend, most of which came in Sky Bet League One. Manager Graham Coughlan, who worked previously with McLaughlin at Roots Hall, said: “Stephen gives us competition down the left and can play in several positions. “He arrives at One Call Stadium with bags of experience and a promotion from League Two in 2015. “He has a terrific work rate and attitude, so will fit into our dressing room really well.” ----------------- Stephen McLaughlin told iFollow Stags: "It's been a long time coming, it's been going on for a while now. "The gaffer ... (was the main attraction) ... I've know him for quite a while now. "My mind is ready (to play on Saturday), but I don't know if I'm fit enough to go straight back in to game time yet. I think Saturday will be too soon for me. "We're going to have a game on Tuesday and I'm going to get 45 minutes there, and we'll see how I come out the other end of that. "I'm a left winger, I like creating and scoring goals. I work hard for the team. "Last season, the only positions I didn't play was centre half and right back. I played up front, midfield, on the right, on the left, left back. It doesn't really bother me. I like playing on the left or coming in off the right. (Question about short term deal). The Irishman made 186 appearances for the Shrimpers during a five year spell at Roots Hall. But Martin believes McLaughlin will be moving on. “We did speak to Stephen but as far as I’m concerned he is going elsewhere,” said Martin. McLaughlin, who has been with Southend United since 2015, is currently out of contract at Roots Hall. And former Blues coach Graham Coughlan, who is now manager of the Stags, is keen to take him to Field Mill. Coughlan is believed to have been keen to bring in McLaughlin since the end of the last season. But he is now likely to push harder for the winger with wide-man CJ Hamilton set to leave the Stags.
