STAGS SIGN GEORGE MARIS FROM CAMBRIDGE

Stags strengthen midfield with Maris signing
mansfieldtown.net, Tues 28 July 2020

Mansfield Town have strengthened their midfield with the signing of George Maris from Cambridge United for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old becomes the Stags’ seventh new signing since the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.

After developing through Barnsley’s youth system, Maris enjoyed loan spells at Nuneaton Town, Guiseley and Lincoln City before signing for United in June 2016.

In recent seasons, he became a significant component in United's midfield, making 150 appearances and scoring 22 goals.

Maris has signed a two-year contract at One Call Stadium.

Manager Graham Coughlan said: “George is a very technical player with lots of ability and a great work ethic.

“He will bring us creativity in the final third and very good delivery at set pieces.

“He will represent the badge with pride and I’m sure he will prove to be a very good addition to our squad.”

Maris told iFollow Stags:
"I'm very pleased to be here. It's been in the process for a while now.
"I've played Mansfield a lot in my time at Cambridge, and the size of the club, the fanbase, and ultimately the squad that they've put together is impressive, and I really think there's a chance for success at this club.
"There's always been good players here, and they've kept the majority of them, added in with what I've seen that they've signed and I can't see why the target isn't promotion this season.
"I've known Joe (Dunne) for 4 years now and when he eventually took over as manager at Cambridge I think I had my best year in professional football. I scored the most goals I've scored and really I just enjoyed coming in every day and working with him.
"So he was a big part (in joining).
"He played me in a central attacking midfield role, and gave me licence to go and play my football. I had a sitting midfielder with me and I had the licence to go up and down and ultimately score goals and get assists and that's what I did for him back then and hopefully I can do it here as well.
"I don't think he really needed to (sell the club to me). I knew about the club, I know Rosey here, he speaks about it very highly. I've played at the stadium 3 or 4 times, I know the size of the club.
"Four years is a long time to be at a club, and maybe it got to the point where I'd be there too long and I needed something new and something to get my teeth into and this is a perfect opportunity for me.
"When I first signed (at Cambridge), I went in as a winger, didn't really know my position, and went in central midfield and found a way of playing that suited my style.
"I like to get up and down the field. I'm not afraid to get back and help ut as well, and all-round box-to-box midfielder."

GEORGE MARIS LEAVES U’S TO COMPLETE MOVE TO MANSFIELD TOWN ON UNDISCLOSED TERMS
cambridge-united.co.uk, Tues 28 July 2020

Cambridge United can today confirm the Football Club have reached an agreement with Mansfield Town to allow George Maris to complete a move away from the Abbey Stadium on undisclosed terms.

Head Coach Mark Bonner commented: “Firstly we would like to thank George for his commitment, hard work and performances during his time here at the Abbey Stadium. We are very grateful for the contribution he has made to the Club.

"Whilst we are of course naturally disappointed to be losing a player of George’s ability, we believe this decision is in the best interests of both George and the Club.

“Ensuring we manage our overall budget to be as competitive as possible on the pitch, has also been a factor we took into consideration. This has been a guiding principle behind all our decisions regarding our playing staff this summer - departures, re-signings and additions.

“Our squad planning is well advanced. We expect to be announcing new signings very soon, and now that we have a start date for the new season, we can get back to work and prepare in earnest.”
