STAGS LADIES WIN
16th March 2003 22:03

Unison League division 2

Mansfield Town Ladies 1-0 Clowne

Gemma Tuckers 18th goal of the season secured a hard fought win against battling Clowne.

Mansfield dominated the first half and almost went ahead after 5 minutes when striker Louise Warren hit a fierce drive which keeper Hodkin did well to beat away on her near post.

Minutes later Warren flew past full back O Conner but with Brown and Tucker waiting on the far post elected to drive a shot into the grateful arms of Hodkin.

Tuckers 20th minute corner was only cleared to Brown whose shot hit the cross bar.

The onslaught of pressure was finally rewarded with a goal when Tucker skipped past two defenders then despatched a neat left foot shot past the oncoming Hodkin.

Clowne worked hard in search of an equaliser in the second period but it was Stags who had the better chances.

A succession of finely delivered corners from Tucker caused panic in the home defence and Rowley was unlucky to not to score when her short range effort was blocked on the line by her own centre half Lena Warren.

Mansfield continued to play neat footbal and were unfortunate not to add to there lead when impressive midfielder Lorraine Mason beat fullback Pearce then drove a fierce shot from just inside the area which thumped against the cross bar.

An even better effort was to follow when full back Lafferty pounced on Hornsbys headed clearance and hit a screamer from 30 yards which again smashed against the cross bar.

5 minutes later it was Louise warrens turn to hit the wood work with a fine turn and shot from 10 yards which bounced off Hodkins near post.

Busy midfielder Kelly Brown limped off with 5 minutes remaining but the Stags down to 10 players kept both there nerve and the lead.

Mansfield were stunned after the match with the news that player manager and goalkeeper Kath bailey will be unable to play again following a work related injury to her right hand.

Head Coach Stewart Rowley praised the popular keeper for her tremendous commitment to the club and everyone connected with mansfield Town wish her a speedy recovery.
