Mansfield Town Football Club can confirm that it has parted company with manager John Dempster.

In a statement, chief executive officer Carolyn Radford said: “Both John [chairman John Radford] and I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to John [Dempster] for his seven-years’ service as a player, academy manager and first team manager.

“Throughout this period, John has conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and integrity and leaves the club in our highest regard.

“John [Radford, chairman] and I consider ourselves to be patient and supportive owners, however, football is a results centered industry and as we approach the halfway stage of the season, our points’ tally has fallen well below expectations. Therefore, we feel a change in leadership is required to provide the best opportunity to turn our season around.

“The process for a new manager begins immediately and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely fashion.”

Academy coach Jamie McGuire has been placed in caretaker charge.

Carolyn Radford on social media, reposting the statement above:

The hardest part of my job. Thank you JD for everything you have done for us over the past 7 years. Football can be very cruel but the good thing is there is always tomorrow

Then, in reply to "It's not often I criticise you and John, but you really let a true servant of our club of the last 7 years down. Pushed into a senior job too quickly and now out of work at Christmas."

Carolyn Radford replied:
John wanted the job, had time served and succeeded and we wanted to offer him the opportunity, we are all sad it hasn’t worked out. COYS

I really enjoyed my time with Mansfield. A great set of lads. Some real leaders in there. Good men. A shame I wasn’t able to aid John from the start. He’s a good man and he will grow from this as we all do in life. I know the club will really go on ..

Mansfield Town manager John Dempster leaves club / Graham Coughlan reported to be possible successor
chad.co.uk, by TIM MORRISS, Saturday 14 December 2019

Mansfield Town Football Club announced on Saturday evening that it had “parted company with manager John Dempster” because “our points tally has fallen well below expectations.”

Dempster, a former captain, who was appointed in the summer from the role of academy manager to replace the sacked David Flitcroft, has been under pressure from supporters as the Stags failed to make an expected promotion push.

It has been reported by the Bristol Post that Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan is considering succeeding him.

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Crewe, Stags chief executive officer Carolyn Radford said: “Both John [chairman John Radford] and I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to John [Dempster] for his seven-years’ service as a player, academy manager and first team manager.

“Throughout this period, John has conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and integrity and leaves the club in our highest regard.

John Dempster: Mansfield Town sack manager after seven months in charge
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50797337

Mansfield Town have sacked manager John Dempster after seven months in charge.

The Stags have not won a league game since 26 October and are six games without a win in all competitions.

Dempster's last game in charge was Saturday's 1-1 draw at Crewe, which left the club 18th in League Two and 12 points below the play-off spots.

BBC Radio Bristol reports that Mansfield have had an approach for Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan turned down by the League One club.

In his post-match interview following Saturday's 2-1 win at Ipswich, which left Rovers fourth in the third tier, Coughlan said both personal and professional reasons were leading him to consider his future at the Memorial Stadium.

"I've got a decision to make, for my own life and my own career, with where I'm going and what I'm doing," the 45-year-old said.

"I don't know where I can take this football club. I've got decisions to make in my own personal life. I'll see which way I wake up in the morning, to be quite honest."

Academy coach Jamie McGuire has been placed in caretaker charge of Mansfield.

"Football is a results centred industry and as we approach the halfway stage of the season, our points tally has fallen well below expectations," Stags chief executive Carolyn Radford said.

"Therefore, we feel a change in leadership is required to provide the best opportunity to turn our season around," she added in a statement on the club website.

Dempster, 36, was promoted from the role of academy manager following the departure of David Flitcroft in May.

Flitcroft left after the Stags lost to Newport County on penalties in the League Two play-off semi-finals, having been in the automatic promotion places until the closing weeks of last season.

Dempster played for the Stags for four years from November 2011 before taking a coaching role and had previously had a temporary spell in charge in 2016 after Adam Murray left as manager.

"John has conducted himself with the utmost professionalism and integrity and leaves the club in our highest regard," added Radford.

In his final interview as Stags boss, following the draw at Crewe, Dempster was aware that his side were desperate for points.

He said: "Normally a point away at Crewe would be a very good one, in our current predicament we're after all three because we need to climb the table quickly.

"People have said that there's been a lack of effort from the players and I've relayed that to the players before the game, which I think motivated them.

"One of the biggest insults in football to label at a professional is that he's not trying and I think you saw today that the players were together, they all put a shift in."

Analysis
Jake Garner, BBC Radio Nottingham's Mansfield Town reporter

Mansfield are way below where they expect to be after last season's exploits. Despite a lot of investment into the squad once again this summer, they have not delivered on the pitch.

It's ultimately up to the manager to get the best from those players and, despite some occasionally good results, we have only seen glimpses of what this team can do.

The squad is certainly good enough to get to where the club wants to be, but you do wonder whether it's too late for this season.

director Steve Hymas, posting on Mansfield Town FC Followers facebook group, Sun 15 Dec 2019:

Let’s put something straight. JD was never forced into the role .He was part of the team that got us promoted from non-league and once his playing career was over he was highlighted as a very talented individual. He was intrinsic in the setting up of our much expanded academy and was made Academy manager which he managed with ease. He became renowned as one of the best coaches in the country winning the league title 3 years running. This did not go unnoticed by the powers that be at the club.He had took on every challenge in front of him and felt himself he needed to be tested. He wanted a new challenge. He had been courted by many clubs but stayed loyal to us and once the managers job became vacant that was the next move for him. Having the ex academy manager in charge would have seen a great pathway for our young players to come through over the coming years and the club went with that option . Glasgow Rangers and Chelsea have managers with less qualifications and less managerial experience and chose to go with bright young individuals . No-one at the club could have envisaged the lack of support this decision was given by our fan base and from day one he was a dead man walking . Results ultimately have led to his demise but I feel the players and the fans never got the bigger picture for the club. Anyway we move on and let’s hope the pot noodle approach to the football club pays off.
