It’s gut-wrenching not to secure win - manager
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 21 September 2019

Stags’ boss John Dempster has praised his side’s ‘exceptional’ work-rate in today’s 2-2 draw with Port Vale, but conceded that Mansfield must be better in ‘crucial moments’ of matches.

Strikes from Kellan Gordon and Danny Rose were both cancelled out by late goals in either half by Mark Cullen and Nathan Smith.

The Stags’ boss says the nature of the draw at Vale Park is ‘gut-wrenching,’ as he believes Mansfield ‘outplayed and outworked’ the Valiants.

“It was domination from start to finish,” he began. “I asked the players to come out fighting and represent what I’m all about and they did that today.

“The level of performance was high, but in crucial moments at the end of each half, we need to be better.

“We outplayed them and we outworked them. A neutral would watch that game and think Mansfield Town are going to go on and get all three points.

“I’m very, very disappointed, as you can imagine. It’s gut-wrenching to not pick up all three points from a dominant display.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/september/gaffer-post-vale-a/

“We’re picking up and looking like the team I expect. But those crucial moments are key and we have to do better.

“People need to be together and communicate with each other, making sure the ball stays out of the back of the net.

“We were in their box a lot more. I thought the work rate and the pressing from the front was exceptional.

“The crowd were disputing the penalty, which I thought was a penalty, then after that a lot of decisions weren’t going our way.

“Our supporters were outstanding today. The noise that came from the [Mansfield] army was brilliant and that’s what drove the boys on.”

The boss says that the overriding emotions from his players at full-time were ‘anger’ and ‘disappointment’ following Smith’s scrappy goal deep into stoppage time.

“When we play like that, we win the ball back quickly and can then play.

“You look through the team and you can’t pick a player that had a poor game today. They were all at a high level and to go away with a point is disappointing.

“The players were disappointed with one another at full-time. There were quite a few words said from the players and the staff.

“[We feel] anger, because we can do better than that [for second goal]. In the key moments, we have to do better. It’s simple.

“I’m an honest person and never give in or back down. That’s what I want to see from my players and they fought today.

“If we can tighten up in those [key] situations, we will start climbing the league. I’m confident that we can climb the league table, but we have to be better in those moments.”

The manager hopes that his side will take the same ‘intensity’ from today’s performance into next Saturday’s home match against Plymouth Argyle.

“We followed on from Tuesday night, where it was domination until the [Matt Preston] sending off and have shown a lot of character to come here and perform at that high level.

“There was a lot of anger in the dressing room after and a lot of disappointment. But we’ll be back in this week and move onto Plymouth.

“It’ll be about picking the players up on Monday once they’ve digested it [result] and putting a plan together for Plymouth.

“But we want more of the same. We want intensity when we press and that same bravery to get on the ball and pass the ball.

“If we do that and tighten up, we’ll be fine.”

John Dempster unhappy with late lapses in each half as Mansfield Town are denied a win
chad.co.uk, Saturday 21 September 2019

Mansfield Town boss John Dempster says Port Vale's late equaliser was 'gut wrenching' after the two sides drew 2-2 on Saturday at Vale Park.

Stags led deep into stoppage time in both halves but Vale pegged them back twice to ultimately earn a point.

And Dempster felt that was a shame given how his side had dominated proceedings.

He said: "It was domination from start to finish. I'd asked the players to come out fighting and represent what I'm about and they did that with a high level of performance.

"But it was crucial moments at the end of each half where we have to do better.

"That can be the difference between being a successful side and not.

"We out-played Port Vale, out-worked them and our fans out-sang them and any neutral would say we had to have won the game, so we're very disappointed and it's gut-wrenching not to get three points."

Dempster says it's all about the basics when it comes to avoiding goals costing them games as happened at Vale Park.

He said; "You just have to head the ball away, punch it away, stop it going in. It's not complicated.

"People need to be together and communicate and in the end it came down to what happened in both boxes but they wanted it more.

"There is anger in the dressing room now as players are disappointed in one another and a few words have been said between players and staff, as we know we can do better than that."

Looking ahead, Dempster now wants to see more of the same, albeit with a more successful outcome.

He said: "We have to stand up and be counted, not back down in a fight, and if we do that we will climb the league.

"I want more of the same - pressing, passing and bravery."

Our performance deserved three points - Bishop
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 21 September 2019

Midfielder Neal Bishop has stated that Mansfield Town’s performance at Port Vale was ‘positive’ but his side were left with an overriding sense of ‘disappointment’ having only taken a single point.

Wing-back Kellan Gordon’s first goal for the Stags was cancelled out in the dying moments of the opening half through forward Mark Cullen.

And despite striker Danny Rose restoring their advantage from the penalty spot, a second goal for the Valiants in additional time ensured the spoils were shared at Vale Park.

Bishop believes it was a performance full of positive aspects that were ultimately overshadowed by the hosts’ late goal.

“I think the performance merited it [three points],” he began. “It was stoppage time at the end of both halves and we’ve been punished.

“I didn’t really see what happened, it was bit of a scramble for the last goal, but certainly we have to manage the first goal better.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/september/bishop-post-vale-a/

“We have to be better in those critical moments because we’re being punished for everything we’re doing slightly wrong. On the whole, for both halves, it was probably our best performance of the season.

“It’s positive but the overriding performance in the dressing room is disappointment.”

The former Scunthorpe man also felt that the players in amber and blue exhibited more trust in one another’s abilities, contributing to perhaps their best performance of the season, thus far.

“We’re good players and we got the majority of our success last season when we were brave and trusted each other on the ball.

“We’re playing in a similar way, with a similar team, we’ve just got to trust each other.

“The last couple of games we’ve been moving the ball through the thirds. We need to learn and we need to learn quickly because we’re starting on a handicap.

“We know where we want to get to, and today is a start performance-wise, but we’re disappointed not to come away with the three points.

“We’ve performed really well and not come away with three points against a side who, I think, have one of the best home records in the league this calendar year.

“There are positives but you hope performances like that turn out in better results.”

In addition, the 38-year-old believes the Stags have to be better in critical moments as they look to climb the Sky Bet League Two standings.

“It’s probably not good enough points-wise but there’s signs we’re starting to put it right,” Bishop continued.

“We should have started whenever the season did, but we haven’t, so we’re putting it right now.

“There’s been some words from the coaching staff to give us everything we need to go out there and play, it’s down to us as players.

“Everything’s in place for us we just need to start picking up points and wins. Hopefully we keep producing these [performances] week in, week out but it’s just the critical moments that are killing us at the minute.”

Lapses in critical moments proving so costly for improving Mansfield Town believes midfield ace Neal Bishop
chad.co.uk

Mansfield Town midfielder Neal Bishop said lapses in critical moments were hampering the club’s fight to get their season going.

Stags conceded late goals in both halves at Port Vale on Saturday where an otherwise excellent performance saw them only take home a point in a 2-2 draw.

“I think the performance merited three points, but in stoppage time at the end of both halves we’ve been punished,” he said.

“We have to be better in those critical moments because we’re being punished for everything we’re doing slightly wrong. On the whole, for both halves, it was probably our best performance of the season.

Bishop said the players were starting to trust one another more and that had heavily contributed to what he felt was the best performance this season to date at Vale Park.

“We’re good players and we got the majority of our success last season when we were brave and trusted each other on the ball,” he said.

A quite brilliant goal by the players @mansfieldtownfc
As a performance coach I ALWAYS look at performance. 2 factors. Sweat, fight, desire + the courage to take the ball have a touch and play. It was there in abundance. Results come, the tough bit is trust

Port Vale 2, Mansfield 2 - John Askey's verdict after dramatic draw
stokesentinel.co.uk, By Michael Baggaley, 21 SEP 2019

Port Vale boss John Askey praised his team's character after they twice came from behind to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw at home to Mansfield.

Nathan Smith's goal in the fourth minute of injury time secured the point to maintain Vale's unbeaten record at Vale Park this season.

Askey's side fell behind to Kellan Gordon on 14 minutes but levelled through Mark Cullen in first half stoppage time. However, Danny Rose's 75th minute penalty seemed to have won the game for the visitors before Smith scrambled home from a corner.

The manager said his side took time to get used to playing 4-4-2 rather than their usual 4-3-3, and were also affected by injuries and Tuesday's game at Exeter.

Rhys Browne, David Amoo, Callum Evans, Manny Oyeleke and Jordan Archer all missed the game through injury.

Askey said: "It wasn't a great game. We struggled early on. We went with two up front but once we changed it and pushed Luke Joyce and Jake Taylor on we looked a bit better. Towards the end of the first half we played some decent stuff and we scored a really good goal."

https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/port-vale-2-mansfield-2-3346259

Asked why Vale found life difficult early on, he said: "I think getting used again to playing 4-4-2. There have been changes.

"We had a tough game against Plymouth here in hot conditions. Exeter was tough, not only the game but the journey and you could see one or two were a little bit leggy today.

"I am trying not to make excuses because I think you can see the players are giving all they have got. It is just we weren't as sharp as we have been previously.

"With five minutes to go I was pleased we managed to get a point.

"Scoring at the end like that will give them confidence, knowing they never give up. That probably wasn't happening previously."

'I hate players diving' - Port Vale boss on ref and Mansfield striker
stokesentinel.co.uk, By Michael Baggaley, 21 SEP 2019

Port Vale boss John Askey complained about referee Josh Smith and Mansfield striker Danny Rose after the Stags were given a controversial second half penalty in the 2-2 draw at Vale Park.

Smith felt Rose had been fouled by Leon Legge 15 minutes from time, so gave the spot kick from which the striker put his side 2-1 up.

Askey was booked for dissent in the aftermath of the goal, but then saw his team level four minutes into injury time through Nathan Smith.

Speaking at his post-match press conference the manager said he was unhappy with both the referee and Rose.

He said: "Leon has gone towards the ball and then their player has knocked it. Leon has tried his best to get out of the way and the lad has jumped into him. But we warned the referee about the lad who got the penalty, about his diving and he is always on the floor. So, it is disappointing.

"But it wasn't only that decision. I thought there were a lot of decisions that were poor.

"It is always stop start and that is what is frustrating. A lot of games this season it is hard to get a momentum going because every time anybody goes on the floor it is a foul."

Asked about his own booking, the manager said: "I hate players diving. He does it a lot so that was my frustration...that somebody like that gets a penalty."
