STAGSNET`S STATISTICAL PREVIEW
12th March 2003 21:10

Swindon was the first team to play the Stags in a league fixture and also the first one to be beaten by them. This happened in the Stags' inaugural league fixture in the old division 3 (S) on August 29, 1931 and the two teams played each other in every season the Stags played in the old div 3 (S) and on October 22, 1938, the Stags notched the first of total three away wins at Swindon, a 2-1 on October 22, 1938. The teams were also inaugural members of the old third division when that came into being at the start of the 1958-59 season and in that division the Stags gained their up-to-date last away win at the end of the great 1976-77 promotion season when a goal by Colin Foster clinched the game that saw the Mighty Stags well on the way to the title. The clubs were also promoted together from the old div 4 in the 1985-86 season, Swindon as champions and Mansfield in third position. At Swindon, the Stags have been hit for six twice, a 1-6 on March 1, 1947 and a 2-6 on November 20, 1965. No Stags win has been with a margin of more than two goals, notably 3-1 at home on December 6, 1975, and the second away win, a 2-0 on March 27, 1976, thus being the fourth of seven consecutive away wins in the 1975-76 season. Notable is also the high percentage of drawn Stags v Swindon games at Field Mill, among them the four latest – 10 draws out of 19 previous league outings. Despite an early goal by Liam Lawrence after just two minutes, the Stags lost 1-2 at Swindon at the end of October 2002. The Stags last home victory against Swindon was about 20 years ago, won by the only goal of the game on March 5, 1983, in the old fourth division.
The biggest Stags home defeat against Swindon, a 1-5 on April 16, 1966, is featured in the vintage Stags section as well as the inaugural league game way back in 1931-32.

Played for both sides: Shayne Bradley, Frank Burrows, Ray Clarke, Colin Calderwood, Martin Ling, Dave Syrett.

Managed both sides: Danny Williams (had two spells at Swindon, left the Stags for his second spell at Swindon in 1974), Andy King (the current Swindon manager who was in charge of the Stags when Leeds were KO'ed in the league cup in 1994-95).
