Manager hails ‘perfect’ performance
mansfieldtown.net, 17 August 2019

Stags’ boss John Dempster says that the ‘perfect away performance’ against Carlisle that earned him his first league win as Mansfield boss is something he will ‘remember for the rest of his life.’

Two first-half goals from Danny Rose and Nicky Maynard, followed by a resolute defensive performance in the second-half, maintained Mansfield’s unbeaten start to the season and earned the former Stags’ captain his first victory as manager of the amber and blue.

He says that the players ‘gave him everything’ and ‘deserved’ the three points.

“I think it was [the perfect away performance]. We had a game plan and I thought, to a man, they [players] were outstanding today.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/august/gaffer-post-carlisle-a/

“I saw great leadership from individuals today and the game management was a joy to watch at times.

“I know the purists want to watch total football, but I like to see the gritty side of the game.

“It’s not about me today, but 18 years ago I made my league debut here, so it’s funny how football throws up these scenarios.

“I’m really pleased and proud of the players. We’ll dust them down and prepare for next week, but I think it’s important that the players enjoy tonight.

“It [first win] is massive and is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I can’t really say much more than that really.

“The players in the squad gave me everything and they gave each other everything. They got what they deserved.

“I’m absolutely delighted [with the clean sheet]. I said to the players before the game that this squad of players have goals in them, but they also have clean sheets in them. Today was a perfect away performance.

“The fact that we’ve come to Carlisle and are going home with three points is a brilliant achievement.

“If you look at chances in the second-half, there weren’t a great deal for either side. We were pleased with that after a great first-half performance against the wind.

“You have to credit all of the players [for the clean sheet]. When you look at the work-rate that the midfield five put in today, it was exceptional.”

The boss also spoke of the two goals - from Rose (below) and Maynard in the first-half - that secured the win for the Stags.

“That [Rose goal] was top drawer. That was the finish of a striker. He’s playing with confidence and he’s playing with freedom.

“But he worked hard in our own box as well, heading away three or four balls in strong wind.

“He did the business in the attacking box, but he also did his job in the defensive box too, which I expect from the players.

“[For the second goal] it [ball] hit the referee, which means it’s a restart. The boys were bright with it.

“The sniffer dog Nicky Maynard is in and around the penalty area and it’s a very clever finish. To hit it like he did was trademark Nicky Maynard."

The manager also urged his players to ‘enjoy’ the victory, before they return to focus on Tuesday evening’s home match against Leyton Orient.

“The victory gives us momentum and gives the players belief. But we’re not going to get too carried away.

“It’s a win in the league that we deserved and we’ll enjoy it. The players will go back to their families tonight and I’m sure they’ll be buzzing.

“Then we’ll move on to focus on the midweek game [against Leyton Orient] on Monday.”

Boss John Dempster makes more history at Brunton Park as Mansfield Town produce ‘the perfect away performance’ at Carlisle United
chad.co.uk, Saturday 17 August 2019

John Dempster celebrated his first win as a Football League manager at Carlisle today, describing Mansfield Town’s 2-0 win as ‘the perfect away performance’.

The win took Dempster full circle after a previous landmark at the same Brunton Park ground.

“It’s not about me today. But 18 years ago I made my league debut here and it’s funny how football throws up these scenarios,” he beamed.

“Now, 18 years later I’m here as a manager and get my first league win.

“I am really pleased, I’m proud of the players. It’s important they enjoy tonight.

“It’s massive. It’s something I will remember for the rest of my life.

“But it’s about the players today. To a man the 18 players we selected for the squad gave me everything and gave each other everything. They got what they deserved.”

Dempster added: “I think that was the perfect away performance.

“We had a game plan - we gave the players a framework to work to and a freedom to work within it - and I thought to a man they were outstanding today.

“The leadership qualities I saw today from individuals and the game management side of things was a joy to watch.

“I know the purists want to watch total soccer, but I like to see the gritty side of the game - defending set plays properly, being together as a unit and as a team - and we saw that in abundance today.

“I was absolutely delighted to get a clean sheet. This squad has goals in it but also clean sheets in it too.

“Steven Pressley has put a brilliant young squad together here as Barnsley found out on Tuesday night. The fact we are returning home with all three points is a brilliant achievement.

“It was a brilliant first half performance against the wind and we knew if we could get to half-time with a lead t would give us a chance. The boys did the business today.”

Danny Rose set Stags on their way with his third goal in three league games with Nicky Maynard adding a second.

“Danny Rose’s goal was top drawer and the finish of a striker who is playing with confidence and freedom. But he did a lot of the dirty work back in our box as well,” said Dempster.

“And the second was a trademark Nicky Maynard goal.

“This win gives us a bit of momentum and gives the players belief - which I’ve already got. But we won’t get too carried away and we will move on to the midweek game against Leyton Orient.”

'Togetherness' led us to victory - defender
mansfieldtown.net, 17 August 2019

Defender Hayden White has cited Mansfield Town’s ‘togetherness’ as a big part of securing their first victory of the 2019/20 campaign, following a convincing 2-0 win over Carlisle United.

A peerless display from the Stags’ number 2 helped drive his side towards not only three points but also a well-deserved clean sheet at Brunton Park.

Strikers Danny Rose and Nicky Maynard were on target for John Dempster’s side in the first half, and White believes Mansfield’s team spirit was evident in securing three points in Cumbria.

“The manner of the goals, the clean sheet as a defender and the togetherness of the group means it’s a big result for us,” he told iFollow Stags.

“It’s a big result but it’s still early on in the season. We’ve drawn the last three but the boys really needed that and it’ll be a big boost for us.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/august/white-post-carlisle-a/

“Nicky and Rosey [were crucial]. We have a good dressing room and we do get on, everyone’s happy.”

The 24-year-old, who played on the right of a back-three, also praised the defensive side of Mansfield’s game as they limited the Cumbrians to very few chances throughout the contest.

“When you come to places like this it’s always going to be difficult - there’ll be periods in the game where you have to sit back and defend and I think we did that really well today.

“They [Carlisle] have changed the way that they play a little, they aren’t as direct, but as a defensive unit everyone did their job today so I’m really pleased with that.

“It’s not just me, it’s everyone in the changing room. They all contribute win, lose or draw we’re all together.

“But on a personal note I am pleased to come back in and get the clean sheet.”

The former Peterborough man reserved special words for the travelling Stags’ faithful, after 292 made the tiring journey north.

“It’s a really long journey [to Carlisle],” he continued.

“And as the boys showed their appreciation afterwards by going over they can get us through these types of games, especially away from home.

“They’ve been fantastic since I’ve been here and I’m sure they’ll continue to be fantastic.

“It’s early on and as we’ve seen from last season things can go either way so it’s important we take each game as it comes and we’ll go into Tuesday’s game against Leyton Orient bouncing.”

Win at Carlisle United was just the boost Stags needed says Mansfield Town defender Hayden White
chad.co.uk, Saturday 17 August 2019

Mansfield Town defender Hayden White said today’s 2-0 win at Carlisle United was just the tonic the side needed after failing to win any of the opening three games.

“It was a big result for us,” he smiled. “It is early in the season still, but we’d drawn the last three so the boys really needed that. It will be a big boost for us.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/win-at-carlisle-united-was-just-the-boost-stags-needed-says-mansfield-town-defender-hayden-white-1-9941741

“We will go into the Leyton Orient game on Tuesday bouncing and can hopefully get another result.

“I was pleased with the manner of the goals, the clean sheet as a defender, and the togetherness of the group.

“When you come to places like this it’s always going to be difficult and there will be periods of the game when you do have to sit back and defend. I thought we did that really well today. Everyone did their job.”

White is back in the fold after recovering from a broken ankle and said: “I was happy with my own performance. I’m not fully firing yet. It’s been a long time and I am just enjoying being out there again.”

Danny Rose set Stags on their way with his third goal in as many league outings and White added: “Danny was outstanding.

“You know what you’re going to get with him. He works so hard and keeps going to the final whistle.

“I don’t know how he managed to squeeze it in from the angle he was at. From where I was behind him it didn’t look like it could go in from there.”

MANAGER: We have to create more with that amount of possession
carlisleunited.co.uk, by Andy Hall

United boss Steven Pressley gave us his thoughts on the disappointing home result against Mansfield Town shortly after full time on Saturday afternoon.

“When their team came in, we looked at what shape we thought they were going to play in, and the personnel, and it looked like a team that had given us huge respect for how we’d been playing,” he said. “But when you play against a team that adopts the tactics that they adopted today, you can’t lose the goals that we did, from really their only two attacks.

“We lost two disappointing goals from their only real opportunities. On the other hand, we didn’t create enough. We’ve been raving about certain players; these players didn’t today quite reach the heights that they have in the past weeks, and we couldn’t break them down unfortunately. There was no lack of effort, but we lacked the quality in the final third.”

Having missed a chance to take the lead moments before the Stags bagged their first, through a Danny Rose volley, he commented: “You have to score these moments when you’re playing a robust side like Mansfield are.

https://www.carlisleunited.co.uk/news/2019/august/manager-let-ourselves-down-in-both-boxes/

“The way they’d set up, it was important we scored first. It wasn’t to be, and the disappointing factor is we didn’t turn possession into opportunities, or carve out those moments where I felt we could.

“And the manner in which they scored that goal was something we were aware of. It’s a strength they have and Rose is always a danger. We’d pointed those aspects out, but we had to defend them at that moment.

“The timing of the second goal is really disappointing. The ironic thing in football is, they spent all the first half wasting time then, in the added time period, got the advantage of it. It’s still something we have to do better on.”

Speaking about the second goal, sparked when United fell foul of a new ruling which means the referee has to pull the game back, should the ball strike his body, he admitted that he felt it was more disappointing because the players were in their defensive shape.

“When it comes from a still ball, we have to defend that moment better than we did,” he told us. “It wasn’t a transition or being out of shape, it was a straight ball forward. We have to defend that type of goal better than we did.

“You’re coming off at half time thinking, how are we losing this game 2-0? In the second half we had so much territorial advantage, so much possession, but we never managed to turn that into real opportunities. We huffed and puffed but never managed, even from set plays in good positions, to really carve out the opportunities we required.”

Having already mentioned the slowing down of the game seen by the opposition, he said: “I told the lads during the break not get frustrated by it. Some younger players sometimes get frustrated and lose their focus on what we’re trying to do, and it can affect their performance.

“I don’t think the referee allowed the game to run and it suited them. They’d come here to spoil, but that’s something you need to deal with and something we need to learn from. It was a game we must win, with the amount of ball we have, but we’ll not win games if we defend the two moments like that and if we don’t carve out enough opportunities that our possession should have led to.

“It isn’t that we weren’t attacking, we just couldn’t find the final pass. Almost the entire second half was spent in their half but they defended the opportunities we created very well and did the job they came to do. That’s something we need to learn from: when teams come here we do need those players who can open things up. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.

“You have to give them credit, they stuck diligently to their plan, they came here, wanted to sit in and counter us, but it’s disappointing that we didn’t defend those moments well. There was a big chance for Harry McKirdy after great play from Nathan Thomas - if he scores it’s a different game and they need to come out. There was a real importance about the first goal and unfortunately they got it.”

United’s intent was clear through the closing stages as the home side ended the game with four strikers on the pitch.

“We had to go for it,” he explained. “We had the players on there but we couldn’t find that creative moment. If the players who can do that naturally aren’t making these moments, it means others have to.

“We all have a responsibility to create and none of us managed to do that today. That’s the disappointing factor - not the effort or application, or the way we went about many things. It was the two moments in our own box and that we didn’t create enough in the other box. Unfortunately, that’s why we lost the game.

“They applied certain antics during the game to try and break our rhythm, but the disappointing factor was we had a lot of ball, didn’t defend two moments in the first half particularly well, and we didn’t create enough clear-cut chances.

“If we’re coming up against a side which is defending resolutely, we have to then find the answers. Even when I look at the game, we pressed them really well in our immediate press, they kicked long and we regained possession and went again.

“We may not be getting the steals at the top end but we’re forcing them to kick long and getting regains. We are being effective in that sense. It’s just from those positions, we need to then have the quality to break teams down.”

We must be better at breaking these teams down says Carlisle Utd boss - as he criticises Mansfield players' "antics"
newsandstar.co.uk, By Jon Colman @joncolman

Steven Pressley admits Carlisle United must learn their lessons from their frustrating home defeat to Mansfield.

The Blues suffered back-to-back league losses after the Stags scored twice in the first half.

United were toothless in their attempt to fight back while the game also saw visiting players and ref Carl Boyeson come in for criticism.

Pressley, though, said that while Mansfield’s “antics” in “throwing themselves on the ground” was frustrating, his own team did not help their cause.

He said: “The way Mansfield set up, and their selection of personnel, was a measure of the respect they’d given us.

https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/sport/football/carlisle-united/17844925.must-better-breaking-teams-says-carlisle-utd-boss---criticises-mansfield-players-39-quot-antics-quot/

“They applied certain antics during the game to try and break our rhythm, but the disappointing factor was we had a lot of ball, didn’t defend two moments in the first half particularly well, and we didn’t create enough clear-cut chances.

“Our players that have been getting real positive reviews of late didn’t manage to create the moments they’re capable of.

“What it does show us is that this is what you’re sometimes going to face.

“When you’re a team that plays the way we play, teams can be spooked by that, and they’ll come here and will try and sit in and make things very difficult.

“We have to become better at breaking them down.”

United failed to score for the first time at home under Pressley and the 2-0 defeat came via goals from Danny Rose and Nicky Maynard.

It was Mansfield’s first victory of the campaign and the first half in particular saw United’s fans vent their anger at the regular stoppages which saw visiting players needing treatment.

They also jeered referee Boyeson for his apparent failure to control this aspect of the game.

Pressley said: “I don’t think he [Boyeson] allowed the game to run and it suited them.

“They’d come here to spoil, they were throwing themselves on the ground continuously, but that’s something you need to deal with.

“I felt there were too many stoppages within the game and it affected the fluency of the game.”

Asked by BBC Radio Cumbria if referees should deal differently with such incidents, he said: “Agreed, but I’d also like players to behave better.

“They went down holding their head on a number of occasions and unfortunately for the referee, when it’s a head knock, he has to be seen to be stopping the game.

“There didn’t seem to be too many problems [with those players] after he stopped the game. That’s the disappointing thing.

“We allowed that a little bit to frustrate us towards the end of the first half. You can understand why.”

He added: “I said [at half-time] that we had to not get frustrated by it. Some younger players sometimes get frustrated and lose their focus on what we’re trying to do, and it can affect their performance.

“That’s something we need to learn from. It was a game we must win, with the amount of ball we have, but we’ll not win games if we defend the two moments like that and we don’t carve out enough opportunities that our possession should have led to.

“There were a lot of things we did well. We won a lot of personal battles, had a lot of the play, but just didn’t create those moments or defend those two moments in our box. That’s what the game consisted of.”
