Victory sets us up nicely for season - manager
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 27 July 2019

Manager John Dempster has said that this afternoon’s 4-2 victory over Rangers under-23s is a ‘nice way to sign off pre-season’ before the ‘business’ starts, with just one week to go until the new campaign begins.

The Stags recorded the win courtesy of four different goalscorers, with Andy Cook, Jacob Mellis, Danny Rose and Otis Khan all finding the net.

The boss says that the win sets Mansfield up nicely in the lead-up to the first game of the new season away at Newport on Saturday.

“It was a decent workout. I thought in the first-half, Rangers moved the ball very well,” he began.

“I was really pleased with how the boys reacted, and the boys who came off the bench improved the display.

“[We scored] four really good goals [which were] well taken. We roll into next week and start preparing for the real business side.

“You want players to be in your mind. We showed that we can play in a back-four as well as a back-three. That flexibility going into the season is going to be key.

“Overall, it’s a nice way to sign off for pre-season. From Monday, that’s the start of the new campaign.

“I know what the starting XI is going to be at Newport and I have the plan already. It’ll be about getting that into the players from Monday to Friday."

The manager was left impressed by the performances of individuals in Rangers’ side this afternoon, and added that he has ‘marked’ the names of players he may be interested in bringing to One Call Stadium, given the newly-formed link between the two clubs.

“I’d like to thank Glasgow Rangers for coming down today and giving us our last fixture of pre-season.

“We didn’t have a fixture pencilled in, so it was proving quite difficult to get one. I really appreciate Steven Gerrard sending a team down with a nice mixture of experience and youth.

“Looking at the players who were on show [for Rangers] today, they had some really talented players on show that were causing us problems.

“They’ll be marked down by our analyst, Dan [Ashby], and we’ll have a chat with the staff about their players.

“There were some really good performances from both sides today.”

The boss was also pleased with the quality of strikes on show by the Stags, along with midfielder Dion Donohue making his first appearance since joining the amber and blue earlier this month.

John Dempster also spoke of the injury to defender Matt Preston, who was substituted in the second-half.

“He [Rose] has been banging them in throughout pre-season and training and was good to see him open up and put that [strike] in the bottom corner.

“I’m not sure about the attempt from the halfway line though - he held his hands up for that one!

“It [goal] was a good finish, along with the others. The free-kick [from Jacob Mellis] was outstanding.

“I’m really pleased, and it was good to see Dion Donohue come onto the pitch. He’s been working hard with the fitness team and got minutes in the tank.

“He [Preston] has a bit of a cut. It was more impact, rather than any kind of muscle pull. So he’s icing that up as we speak, and we hope he will be okay.”

John Dempster already knows how Mansfield Town will line-up against Newport County
chad.co.uk, by STEPHEN THIRKILL, Saturday 27 July 2019

Stags brought their pre-season campaign to a close with a solid 4-2 win at home to Glasgow Rangers U23’s.

And Dempster says the successful campaign has helped him decide on how Mansfield will line-up in Wales.

“I know what the eleven will be and what the plan will be and we will spend the next week getting that plan into the players,” he said.

“Certain players have posed me questions and that is what I asked of them before the game, I want them to be in my mind.

I'll continue to give Stags my all - Rose
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 27 July 2019

Striker Danny Rose insisted he will continue to give ‘100 percent’ for his side after netting the third goal in this afternoon’s 4-2 victory over Rangers under-23s.

The Stags’ frontman added to his pre-season tally with a fine finish, after also finding the back of the net against Bradford Park Avenue earlier this month.

Rose, who by his own admission struggled for form last season, is hoping to better himself during the upcoming campaign.

“Goals help with confidence but I’ve not been scoring that many,” he began.

“I’ve just got to keep giving 100 percent for the lads and everybody involved with Mansfield.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/july/rose-post-rangers/

“I think my main aim is to do better than last season. Form and injuries killed me a lot last season, so I’m just hoping to do better.

“I play as it goes so I wouldn’t mind getting into double figures. Last season I only got four or five, which isn’t good enough for me, so I’m hoping to hit double figures.”

The former Barnsley man then touched upon the Stags’ summer acquisitions, who have added both depth and quality to John Dempster’s roster.

“We now have competition from Andy Cook and Nicky Maynard who have been brilliant in pre-season.

“It’s the same every time when the gaffer brings in new signings: you just have to stake your claim and hope to get in the team.

“They’ve been class. Not just Nicky and Cook, the lads at the back and in midfield have been brilliant.

“It’s looking a strong squad this season so we’re hoping to push on.”

The striker also revealed he is now full of confidence after a gruelling yet enjoyable pre-season programme.

“It’s been a tough pre-season but I’ve enjoyed it,” Rose continued. “Portugal was good but we’ve got more in the tank to go next week.

“I’d take this goal back to get one next week, though. I’m going in there [to Newport] full of confidence after last season.

“I just hope there’s more to come in the league now, but the lads have had a good pre-season so we’re just looking to take that into the game against Newport next week.”

Danny Rose aiming for improved season with Mansfield Town ahead of season opener at Newport County
chad.co.uk, by STEPHEN THIRKILL, Saturday 27 July 2019

Striker Danny Rose said he would swap his strike in Saturday’s 4-2 friendly win over Rangers Under-23s for a goal in next weekend’s League season opener at Newport.

Rose insists he is confident ahead of the trip to Rodney Parade to launch the 2019-20 campaign, despite the disappointment of last season’s Play-Off semi-final defeat to the Welsh side - and Stags boss John Dempster bringing in two further quality strikers during the summer.

Rose, who netted just four times in 34 league matches last season after hitting the 14 the previous campaign, said: “I’d take that one back to get one next week. I’m going in there [to Newport] full of confidence.

“I just hope there’s more (goals) to come in the league now, but the lads have had a good pre-season so we’re just looking to take that into the game against Newport.

“It’s been a tough pre-season but I’ve enjoyed it, Portugal (pre-season training camp) was good but we’ve got more in the tank to go next week.

“There are not many differences between them (other pre-seasons), We do a lot of running and small-sided games, but the intensity has been there

Rose was at the centre of much speculation earlier in the post-season with Tranmere Rovers, Salford City and Bradford City all said to be keen on the frontman.

But he insisted he would continue to give 100% to the Stags after netting his second pre-season goal - and wants to try to reach double figures on the goalscoring front.

“Goals help with confidence but I’ve not been scoring that many,” he admitted.

“I’ve just got to keep giving 100% for the lads and everybody involved with Mansfield.

“My main aim is to do better than last season. Form and injuries killed me a lot last season, so I’m just hoping to do better.

“I wouldn’t mind getting into double figures. Last season I only got four or five, which isn’t good enough for me, so I’m hoping to hit double figures.”

Rose agreed that the signings of strikers Andy Cook and Nicky Maynard had added more quality to the squad at One Call Stadium.

“We now have competition from Cooky (Andy Cook) and Nicky Maynard who have been brilliant in pre-season,” said Rose.

“It’s the same every pre-season when the gaffer brings in new signings. You just have to stake your claim and hope to get in the team.

“They’ve been class. Not just Nicky and Cooky, the lads at the back and in midfield have been brilliant.

“It’s looking a strong squad this season so we’re hoping to push on.”

I want to repay owners and fans - Khan
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 27 July 2019

Attacking midfielder Otis Khan stated that he wants to ‘repay’ owners John and Carolyn Radford as well as the fans during the course of the 2019-20 season.

The 23-year-old was named amongst the Stags’ substitutes for their final pre-season outing, however, it took less than four minutes for the midfielder to make his mark.

Introduced in place of teammate Alex MacDonald on 72 minutes, the number 10 calmly drove home Mansfield’s fourth goal of the afternoon to put the result beyond doubt.

And Khan revealed that he wants to show exactly what he’s capable of during the upcoming campaign.

“I want to show these fans, and John and Carolyn [Radford] what I’m here to do,” he said.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/july/khan-post-rangers/

“As long as I’m playing I’m going to be repaying them. I want nothing more than this team to go up.

“It’s a great club with great fans and I just want to do my bit on the pitch.”

The former Sheffield United youngster also revealed details of his personal pre-season programme that he has embarked on, in an attempt to be in perfect condition next term.

“Plenty of fans know I didn’t feature too much towards the back end of last season, so in my eyes I didn’t deserve a break.

“I went off training by myself and got myself right for the season ahead.

“It was really beneficial. I went up to the Lake District where it was quiet and was just able to focus on myself; I was able to get my mind and body right for this season.”

And on the whole, Khan believes the Stags’ pre-season schedule has helped massively as they look towards Newport County this forthcoming Saturday.

“It’s been really good,” he continued. “Having the trip to Portugal, everyone gets to know each other that little bit better, especially with new signings.

“I’ve had a good pre-season myself. I’m fit and ready, in the best position I can be to start games. I know I’m ready it’s just about seeing what happens on that first game of the new season.

“I can’t wait to be playing Newport on the first day of the new season. Last season we got off to a flyer and I just hope it can be the same again.”

Otis Khan is raring to go and eager to show Mansfield Town fans and owners what he can do
chad.co.uk, by STEPHEN THIRKILL, Saturday 27 July 2019

Otis Khan is desperate to show the Mansfield Town fans what he can do.

The midfielder was left out of the side for much of the back end of last season as Stags missed out on promotion and is eager to repay the faith shown in him.

Khan, who scored against Rangers U23’s as a second half sub, embarked on his own personal pre-season fitness regime ahead of the club’s official return to pre-season.

And he has declared himself fit and ready to show what he can do.

“I am really hungry and driven,” he said. “I had a good pre-season myself and I am fit and ready.

“I am in the best condition I can be to start the games. I know I am ready .

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/otis-khan-is-raring-to-go-and-eager-to-show-mansfield-town-fans-and-owners-what-he-can-do-1-9902297

“It is just about seeing what happens.

“Plenty of fans know I didn’t feature much towards the back end of the season, so in my eyes I didn’t deserve a break.

“I just went off training by myself to get myself right for the season coming. I went up to the Lake District, it was nice and quiet and I just focused on myself.

“I got my mind and body right for the season coming. I want to show these fans what I can do and give back to the chairman and Carolyn and do what I was brought here to do

“As long as I am playing I am going to be doing that. I want nothing more than this team to go up, it is a great club with great fans and I just want to do my bit on the pitch.”

But Khan knows he faces stiff competition if he is to win a place in the starting eleven for the big kick-off at Newport County on Saturday.

“It is always challenging to get a starting place, no matter what club you go to,” he added.

“I know I am doing enough, but there is a lot of quality in the team, so whoever the gaffer starts with on Saturday, I know my chance will come.

“It is up to me to stay in the team. I cannot wait for the start of the season..

“Pre-season has been really good, the trip to Portugal has helped the lads get to know each other a little better.

“We have kept improving each game and we can see that with performance and results.”
