Stags sign James Clarke

John Dempster told iFollow Stags:
"We've got James Clarke in from Burnley, he's an U21 right back, he was their youth team captain, highly thought off.
We think he's got potential
He'll be part of the U21 squad but if he impresses, there's no reason why he can't be fighting for the right back or right wing-back slot."

Defender James Clarke (pictured left) and goalkeeper Aidan Stone, who both played their last games for Burnley in the recent Lancashire Senior Cup Final, are both set to be Mansfield Town players next season.

They’ve confirmed the signing of 20-year-old Stone who joined Burnley just over a couple of years ago from non-league Brocton. With their first choice goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik having suffered a cruciate ligament injury, Stone will battle for the goalkeeper’s jersey with Conrad Logan.

He’d been on trial with Mansfield towards the end of last season having learned he wouldn’t be getting a new deal at Burnley and impressed them. Stone himself was impressed too and said today: “I’m delighted to get the deal over the line. The way the club and the staff were with me when I came in on trial, it made me feel that I really did want to sign for this club.”

He will be joined by former Burnley under-23 team mate Clarke. He’d played in the centre of defence before moving into the right-back position at Burnley and had settled well into the under-23 team having come through the junior teams during his time at Burnley.

Things seemed to be going well for him under Michael Duff but a change of coach during the season, coupled with an injury, saw him struggle to regain his place when he returned to full fitness. Mansfield always looked a likely destination for Clarke as it did for Stone and Up the Clarets understand he’s signed a two year deal with the League Two club.

Up the Clarets would like to wish both James and Aidan the very best at Mansfield.
