Stags sign experienced defender
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 02 February 2019

We are delighted to announce the signing of experienced defender Ben Turner until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old began his career at Coventry City after graduating from the club’s youth academy in 2005.

During his spell with the Sky Blues, which spanned from 2005 until 2011, he made 72 league appearances.

In 2011, Turner made the switch to then-Championship outfit Cardiff City, where he made 111 league appearances over a five-year stint.

A standout moment for the centre-back during his time with Cardiff was scoring a dramatic equaliser against Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley in 2012, a game that the Bluebirds went on to narrowly lose 3-2 on penalties.

Turner was an integral part of the Cardiff side that won promotion to the Premier League as League champions in 2012-13, appearing 31 times during their successful campaign.

The following season, Turner made 31 Premier League appearances with the Bluebirds.

The defender’s most recent spell was with Burton Albion, having made 27 appearances for the Brewers this season.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign,” said Turner. “It’s obviously a club that’s going places. The league table shows that the club has a massive chance of a getting promoted and I’m just really happy to join and be part of that.

“[I’ve come here] to get promoted. That’s the big draw, a club that’s upwardly mobile. I spoke to the manager and his enthusiasm spoke for itself.

“[I wanted] somewhere that I could maybe get that bit of mojo back and that bit of enthusiasm around me. The enthusiasm from speaking to the gaffer and people around this place, the club is riding a nice wave at the minute."

Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft added: “He is part of a bigger plan. “We have assessed David Mirfin over three of four reserves games and he is still short and might be for another six weeks. “The games are going to get bigger for what we are trying to achieve.

“We needed cover and we lost Hayden White too. “With Ryan Sweeney on nine bookings and Matty Preston on eight it was important we got cover for that position.

“Ben has promotion on his CV and he is a good sort to have iun and around the dressing room. He adds a bit of steel and substance. I am delighted with the capture.

“It may be 10 days before we can utilise him after he picked up a slight calf injury against Manchester City. But we’ll have him for 14 crucial games.”

Ben Turner leaves Burton Albion by mutual consent
The former Cardiff City and Coventry City defender made 99 appearances for the Brewers

Ben Turner has left Burton Albion by mutual consent.

Turner and the Brewers have come to an agreement that was beneficial to both parties, which allows the 30-year-old to end his deal at the Pirelli Stadium and thus permit him to look for another club when back from a calf injury, as a free agent.

Turner made 99 appearances in all competitions for the Brewers since joining Albion in 2016.

He was Nigel Clough's first signing after Burton earned promotion to the Championship, and has been a regular at the back throughout his three seasons with the Brewers.

The ex-Cardiff City man made 27 of his appearances this season, before coming off in the first half of the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg defeat at home to Manchester City with a slight calf tear.

He is expected to be back fit to play in February, although that will not be with Burton.

But it was confirmed Turner will continue training with Albion to build up his fitness when his contract termination was confirmed on Thursday night.

Clough said: "We sat down with Ben earlier in the week and we told him that it was unlikely we would be able to offer him anything for next season and we therefore wanted to do the best we could to help him get fixed up.

"The rebuilding is going on looking ahead to next season and this is part of it.

"Ben has been brilliant for us for two-and-a-half years but now this is the best thing all round for all parties.

"Once you become a free agent, there are always clubs looking for players after the deadline. Players who are free agents are in a pretty good position.

"Hopefully it will only be a couple of weeks or so until he’s back fit, so he can stay with us while he recovers and then will be a free agent.

"We think that’s the best way of helping him. That shows how much we think of Ben and we want to help him as much as we can."
