David Mirfin gets through first 90 minutes in Mansfield Town reserves’ drubbing at Wigan Athletic
chad.co.uk, Tuesday 22 January 2019

Despite a 6-0 reserves drubbing at Wigan Athletic this afternoon, Mansfield Town were delighted to see centre half David Mirfin come unscathed through his first full 90 minutes of football as he continues his comeback from injury. Mirfin was one of several first team names in the side who were well beaten by their Championship opponents, who netted three times in each half. Joe Piggott led the way with a hat-trick with further strikes by Ollie Crankshaw, Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Jolley.

Joe Piggott hat-trick sees Latics win comfortably against experienced Mansfield side.

Central League Match Report: Wigan Athletic 6 - 0 Mansfield Town

WIGAN ATHLETIC 6 MANSFIELD TOWN 0
PIGGOTT 18 (PEN), 64, 87, CRANKSHAW 35, GELHARDT 45, JOLLEY 84

A young Wigan Athletic development squad turned out an impressive display to defeat an experienced Mansfield Town side 6-0 at Christopher Park in the Central League on Tuesday afternoon.

A Stags side boasting over 1,500 league appearances were put to the sword by Nick Chadwick’s development group, who included under-18s Adam Long, Divin Baningime and Joe Gelhardt in their starting XI whilst Mitchell Culshaw, Charlie Jolley and Will McGuffie featured as second-half substitute.

Joe Piggott was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick, with Ollie Crankshaw, Gelhardt and Jolley also on the mark in a superb display in difficult conditions.

Latics showed their intent from the off and Piggott fired wide early on before scoring on 12 minutes from a Tylor Golden cross, only to be ruled offside.

Piggott did have the ball in the net legally soon after as Crankshaw was fouled in the area by Conrad Logan, leaving the young striker to convert his first of the afternoon from the penalty spot.

Gelhardt turned smartly and forced a save from Logan as the half hour approached before Owen Evans made an equally impressive save from Otis Khan at the other end.

It was 2-0 soon after, though, as Crankshaw continued his scoring run for Latics and loan club Curzon Ashton with a sublime left-footed drive from 25 yards.

Baningime fired a chance over just before the break as he met trialist Patrick Webber’s cross at the back post, but Gelhardt did get Chadwick’s side a third as he skipped three challenges before firing a low shot beyond Logan.

Latics managed the game well after the break and were then clinical as the second-half wore on.

They made it 4-0 when Piggott and Golden linked up for the former to fire home his second with a neat right-foot finish.

It was five when substitute Jolley finished with great composure after Baningime’s initial effort had been deflected into his path.

And Latics’ sixth came late on as Piggott completed his hat-trick with a cool finish after Jolley harried the Mansfield defence into an error on the edge of their own penalty area.

Latics: Evans; Golden, Long, Williams, Webber T* (Galvin 65); Merrie (Capt) (McGuffie 73), Perry, Baningime, Crankshaw (Culshaw 73), Gelhardt (Jolley 79), Piggott.
Sub: Perrin
