Unity key to incredible comeback - manager
mansfieldtown.net, 19 January 2019

Stags' boss David Flitcroft has cited the 'strong togetherness' of his charges as the reason for Mansfield's remarkable comeback victory against Colchester this afternoon.

The amber and blue found themselves two goals down at the break, but second-half strikes from Nicky Ajose, Tyler Walker and CJ Hamilton ensured the Stags would take all three points in dramatic fashion.

The manager says that 'a colective work ethic' was key in securing the victory, while also praising the seamless transition that Stags' January additions have made.

"There's been a collective work ethic and togetherness all season," he said. "The new players that have come in have fitted in really quickly.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/january/gaffer-post-colchester/

"To see loan players adapt and want to be Mansfield Town players, you realise that the togetherness is strong.

"In moments when you're one-nil or two-nil down, you need a resolve. We impacted more on them in the second-half.

"In the first-half it was too intricate. There was no punch or impact. It wasn't us. We had to make their defenders work and we didn't first half.

"Nicky's ball [to Hamilton], he put that in thinking like a striker. It's a phenomenal ball.

"Tyler's finish is pure. It's just outstanding really. You've got to ask questions of any team and we have done. The lads deserved that win.

"The important one [goal] is the [first] one. That's what I explained to them at half-time. When you get to 2-1, it changes the mindset.

"But you can't run the risk of going for it and them going three up. Momentum is key and we had the momentum at 2-1 to put them on the back foot.

"We knew there was going to be a load of extra time and we saw the game out. It ended up being a great victory."

Despite Stags incredible win, the manager spoke with a sombre tone in his post-match interview, as he delivered the news that defender Hayden White has suffered a 'probable broken ankle.'

"He [White] has come in to the dressing room with probably a broken ankle, we think. It's a 99 percent probable broken ankle," he added.

"There has to be a duty of care [from referees]. That's what you're out there for, to manage the situations.

"Frank [Nouble] felt that he was wronged of a decision, then to go on, it's a horrific tackle. The management of the game from minute one until 96, you could feel it coming.

"The referee didn't have the last 15 minutes of the game [under control]. Even though we've had a win, it's taken the shine off it. My thoughts are with Whitey.

"It's part of the game, but it could have been prevented with better game management. It boiled over and it didn't have to.

"We'll go get him [White] an X-ray. We'll get him in a good place and work from there."

The boss says that despite the 'great win,' the dressing room is 'low' because of White's devastating injury.

"Colchester have been building this game up, but I said to the boys to just concentrate on being a player.

"John McGreal is a top person and top manager, and I have every bit of respect for him.

"It was a big game for Colchester and they built it up as a big game. We had to come and match their ethic and willingness.

"We didn't do that first-half, but second-half, when we did, it was a great win.

"The dressing room is low, with Whitey coming in there. He means a lot to them, because he's a leader.

"They listen to him and he's highly respected. I'll pick the boys up when we're next in. We'll grab some positives out of a poor situation."

Suspected broken ankle for Hayden White after “horrific tackle” takes shine off Mansfield Town’s win at Colchester
chad.co.uk, Saturday 19 January 2019

Devastated Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft has spoken out on the bad injury-time tackle that left Hayden White with a suspected broken ankle. The injury took the gloss off the Stags’ terrific fightback to win 3-2 at their fifth-placed promotion rivals, Colchester United, as they remained third in League Two. White was the victim of a rough challenge by Frank Nouble in injury-time that left the Stags wing-back on a stretcher.

“I feel numb. He [White] has come walking into the dressing room with probably a broken ankle, we think. It’s a 99 per cent probable broken ankle,” said Flitcroft. “It just worries me. The game worries me. There has to be a duty of care [from referees]. That’s what you’re out there for, their first thing is to manage situations.

“The whole build up to it (the tackle on White)... Frank [Nouble] felt that he was wronged of a decision, then to go on... it’s a horrific tackle.”

Flitcroft was unahppy with the performance of the referee, which he thought contributed to the bad challenge that earned Nouble a yellow card.

“The management of the game from minute one until 96, you could feel it coming. I could feel something going on,” said Flitcroft.

“The players tried to control themselves but the referee didn’t have the last 15 minutes of the game [under control]. “The players are the most important people on the pitch.

“Even though we’ve had a win, it’s taken the shine off it. All my thoughts are with Whitey. “What he has put into his game and how he is trying to improve. He’s just had a baby and his family who I care about, I’ve got that to think about now.

“It’s part of the game and we all understand that, but it could have been prevented with better game management, referee management. It boiled over and it didn’t have to.

“We’ll go get him [White] an X-ray and get him comfortable. We’ll get him in a good place, as good as we can, and then work from there.

“The dressing room is low, with Whitey coming in there. He means a lot to them, because he’s a leader. “They listen to him and he’s highly respected. I’ll pick the boys up when we’re next in. We’ll grab some positives out of a poor situation.”

Squad work ethic and transition of new players praised by Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft after 3-2 win at Colchester United
chad.co.uk, Saturday 19 January 2019

Delighted Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft saluted the work ethic of his squad - and the way his January signings have fitted in - after the Stags’ terrifc 3-2 comeback win at promotion rivals Colchester United. Trailing 2-0 at half-time, the Stags fought back through a first goal from new signing Nicky Ajose, Tyler Walker’s equaliser and CJ Hamilton’s winner in a remarkable second 45 minutes.

Flitcroft said: “There’s been a collective work ethic and togetherness all season, The new players who have come in have fitted into the squad really quickly.

“To see loan players adapt and want to be Mansfield Town players, you realise that the togetherness is strong.

“In moments when you’re 1-0 or 2-0 (down), you have got to have a resolve. We impacted more on them (Colchester) in the second-half. “In the first-half it was too intricate and too soft. There was no punch or impact. It wasn’t us. We suddenly thought we couldn’t pass our way, but there are more ways to beat a team.

“We had to make their defenders work and we didn’t first half, but we certainly did in the second half. “The quality we have on the pitch... Nicky (Ajose)’s ball for CJ (Hamilton’s) run is a phenomenal ball. “When you look at Nicky in the box and Tyler’s finish is pure. It’s just outstanding really.

“You’ve got to ask questions of any team and that’s what we have done. “We didn’t do it in the first half but we certainly did in the second. The lads deserved that win.”

Asked if he could see the second-half fightback coming at the interval, Flitcroft added: “The important one [goal] is the [first] one. That’s what I explained to them at half-time. When you get to 2-1, it changes the mindset, the stadium and how our supporters feel.

“But you can’t run the risk of going gungho and then going three down. Momentum is key in anything and we had that momentum at 2-1 to put them on the back foot.

"The second one (came) and then you could smell the third. “We saw the game out. We knew there would be a load of extra time and we saw the game out. It ended up being a great victory.”

Goalscorer labels 'intensity and belief' as reasons for comeback
mansfieldtown.net, 19 January 2019

Striker Nicky Ajose specified ‘intensity and belief’ as the two main components that fuelled Mansfield Town’s 3-2 comeback victory over Colchester United.

The on-loan frontman, who joined the Stags from Charlton Athletic on Monday, netted his first goal in Mansfield colours on Saturday afternoon.

Connecting with Tyler Walker’s cross in the 51st minute, Ajose scored the first of three Mansfield goals to spark a superb comeback at the JobServe Community Stadium.

However, the striker diverted attention towards the squad’s obvious desire to recover from a two-goal deficit at the break.

“I think the intensity and belief were key,” Ajose stated. “If our mentality wasn’t quite right first half it certainly was second half.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2019/january/ajose-post-colchester/

“We were lucky enough to only be two down so on reflection it’s a great result and it shows what we’re about with the characters we’ve got.

“You come to a top six side and when it’s two-nil at half time, nine times out of ten that’s game over, but not here with this group of lads.

"They’ve took me in and from what I have seen it’s going to be a good season.”

The 27-year-old also recognised the first-half showing was below par and drew attention to the faults they were able to rectify during a peerless second half.

“We knew the first half wasn’t good enough and we just didn’t win our individual battles.

“Me and Ty [Walker] at the front we weren’t getting enough second balls - plus the two goals we conceded were poor.

“When we’ve come in the gaffer was calm. He’s just questioned us and challenged us, saying ‘is that what we’re about?’

“We were not happy so we’ve gone out and reacted in the right way. We blitzed them second half.”

Despite the spectacular result, Hayden White was forced off during second-half injury time for a suspected broken ankle.

Ajose touched upon this news and gave words of encouragement on behalf of his teammates.

“I didn’t know until we got into the dressing room but they think it’s a bad injury,” he continued.

“We’re all gutted for White and we have our fingers crossed

“All we can do now is try and make sure when he returns, if it is a bad injury, it’s in League One.”

Mansfield Town goalscorer Nicky Ajose says shine has been taken off Colchester win after Hayden White's sickening injury
chad.co.uk, Saturday 19 January 2019

Mansfield Town players have had the shine taken off their thrilling comeback victory at Colchester, after seeing a team-mate suffer a sickening injury. Goalscorer Nicky Ajose admitted it was a 'massive' win for the club against a side also fighting for promotion - particularly given the fact that Colchester led 2-0 at one point. Stags ended the game 3-2 up, but deep in stoppage time Hayden White was fouled by Frank Nouble, who was yellow carded, and White left the pitch on a stretcher. It's thought the Mansfield player has suffered a broken ankle.

Ajose was bitterly disappointed for his stricken team-mate. "Obviously it's a massive result for us but a bit of shine has been taken off. Whitey looks like he's got a bad one and we're all gutted for him," said the forward. "I was on the bench and didn't see it but apparently it's a disgraceful challenge. I'm gutted for Whitey, he's a good lad.

"We'll get a job done for him. There's nothing we can do about it now, we'll just hope for the best."

The striker paid tribute to the impact boss David Flitcroft had on the game at the break, with his side trailing by two goals. "Three goals in the second half shows what we're about," he said. "The gaffer was brilliant to be fair, he just questioned us, asked if we were giving everything we've got, could we do more, challenged us individually.

"We stood up to the test in the second half."

Beating a promotion hopeful on their own turf was especially pleasing for the Stags, who sit third on 51 points - three clear of the play-off places.

"It's a massive result, they were on our coat-tails and we've come to their place and beat them," said Ajose. "It keeps us in there, we're in a good place. "We're happy, but we've got our fingers crossed for Whitey."

‘We’re feeling sore at the minute’ - U’s boss McGreal after defeat to Mansfield
by Carl Marston @Carl_Marston, East Anglian Daily Times, 19 January 2019

The U’s surrendered a two-goal lead as the Stags came storming back with three second-half goals to complete a remarkable comeback at the Jobserve Community Stadium.

Goals from Tom Eastman (14 minutes) and Courtney Senior (30) put the U’s in a commanding position at half-time.

But this game was then turned on its head by three Mansfield goals. Nicky Ajose (51), Tyler Walker (64) and CJ Hamilton (79) all hit the target with deadly finishes to seal the U’s fate.

“For the first 50 minutes we were very good,” explained McGreal.

https://www.greenun24.co.uk/colchester-united/we-re-feeling-sore-at-the-minute-colchester-united-boss-mcgreal-after-3-2-home-defeat-to-mansfield-1-5858627

“We had a great start and got 2-0 up, but you have to give Mansfield credit. They changed their shape and changed some of their personnel.

“We’re feeling really sore at the minute, especially as we started the second half really well as well.

“Sammie (Szmodics) had a chance to put us 3-0 up, and he will personally be disappointed that he has not scored today.

“But we were still 2-0 up, even without taking that chance.

“The ground seemed to go quiet a bit and Mansfield then got a goal back. That was sloppy play from us, with us not picking up.

“I sensed the game was changing, but I still fancied us on the counter.

“They brought on fresh legs and the last 20 minutes were tough. However, some of our football this afternoon was excellent, against a top side,” added McGreal.

Colchester United 2 Mansfield Town 3 - reaction from John McGreal after U's loss
By Jonathan Waldron @JonWaldron1, gazette-news.co.uk

COLCHESTER United boss John McGreal admits losing 3-2 at home to promotion rivals Mansfield Town this afternoon was tough to take.

But the U's head coach took comfort from his side's performance for much of their game against the Stags, despite seeing his side surrender a two-goal lead to lose.

First-half goals from Tom Eastman and Courtney Senior put Colchester in full command at the break.

But strikes after half-time from Nicky Ajose, Tyler Walker and CJ Hamilton completed Mansfield's comeback, leaving Colchester beaten.

McGreal said: “It’s really sore at the minute.

“We got a great start and went in at half-time 2-0.

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/sport/17370932.colchester-united-2-mansfield-town-3-reaction-from-john-mcgreal-after-us-loss/

“Sammie Szmodics had a good opportunity to make it 3-0 and then the whole area died a little bit and went really quiet.

“That was a bit of a turning point; they got their first goal from a sloppy bit of play from us and then you just sensed that the wind had changed.

“Once they started moving the ball around and bringing players off the bench, it was difficult.

“For 50 minutes, we were very, very good.

“But the result shows 3-2 and we have to give Mansfield unbelievable credit for how they’ve changed things and personnel to get the win, in the end.

“I thought some of our attacking play was brilliant and we didn’t quite get the win but I thought for the first 50 minutes, we more than matched them.

“At 2-0, we should have got something from the game but I have to give Mansfield the credit for coming back in the last half hour and turning the game."

The defeat leaves Colchester sixth in League Two, five points off the top three.

"We're trying to bridge these gaps with these big boys in our league and we're nearly there," said McGreal.

"We're nearly doing it every week and the boys are putting in a hell of a shift.

"It's tough to compete against these big boys but we've done it on a regular basis and we've done it over 50 minutes today where they've had to adapt and change their shape, because they couldn't live with us.

"But credit to Mansfield, because they changed their shape and personnel and I thought Jorge Grant made a difference for them - I thought he was terrific for them."

McGreal admitted the nature of the goals his side conceded were disappointing.

He added: "We've just looked at the goals quickly and we haven't really shipped goals like that.

"They were poor goals to give away really.

Colchester United forward Frank Nouble looking to back up performances with wins
By Jonathan Waldron @JonWaldron1
https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/sport/17372933.colchester-united-forward-frank-nouble-looking-to-back-up-performances-with-wins/

FRANK Nouble admits Colchester United must back performances up with results as they continue their League Two promotion push.

The U’s attacker insists they have played well in recent games, despite a run of one win in their last six matches.

Colchester lie sixth in the table and five points off the automatic promotion places following their 3-2 home defeat against Mansfield Town and former West Ham forward Nouble says they must do all they can to pick up points, in their chase for a top-seven finish.

Nouble said: “It’s all about results now.

“We’re playing well and even in the games that we didn’t win in the last month or so, we’ve done alright but we’re just not getting over the line.

“We’ve scored a few goals now in our last few games but we don’t really concede three at home.

“We just need to go away this week and work and improve and hopefully get the results that we need.

“We’re a good team and we’ll keep going until the end.

“It doesn’t matter whether people believe in us or not, we’ll keep going and working and following what the gaffer wants us to do.

“Other teams have got games in hand, which is frustrating.

“But at the same time, we know we have to play some more of the top six and if we can take points off them, I’m sure we’ll be alright.”

Colchester looked like they were on course for an important win against Mansfield, after going 2-0 up inside the opening half hour.

But the Stags hit back in the second half, scoring three times in the space of 28 minutes to win.

“They’re one of the better teams in the league and it felt like a good game to be involved in,” said Nouble, who along with right-back Ryan Jackson has been the U’s most regular league starter so far, this season.

“We were up for it and I’m sure they were but in the end, the result has gone their way so we just have to go again.

“We played well and I’m sure anyone who watched the game enjoyed it, whether a supporter or a neutral.

“It was just frustrating losing a game like that.

“They scored three similar goals - tap-ins from crosses - so we have to work on that.

“But at the same time, it’s January and we know where we want to be this season so we just have to keep working.

“I know that we keep saying that but our first-half performance and the first ten minutes of the second half were positive, against a good side.

“The main thing is that we created chances and if we play like that, I’m sure we’ll win more games than we lose.”

Meanwhile, Nouble said he will contact Hayden White after the Mansfield defender suffered a suspected broken ankle in the U’s defeat.

White was injured following Nouble’s challenge in the closing stages of the Stags’ 3-2 win.

Nouble added: “I hope he’s OK - I know him and Jacob Mellis and a few of the other boys so I’ll give him a text.

“I tried to get the ball but I hit him - I hope he’s OK.”

‘We will come back from this’ - insists Nouble after U’s defeat to Mansfield
by carl marston
https://www.greenun24.co.uk/colchester-united/esx-ipswich-town-forward-frank-nouble-confident-colchester-united-will-bounce-back-from-mansfield-defeat-1-5859149

Frank Nouble is confident that the U’s will bounce back from the disappointment of losing a two-goal lead, against promotion rivals Mansfield Town.

Nouble believes that Saturday’s 3-2 home loss was just a hic-cup, against a team who are riding high in third spot.

“Mansfield are one of the better teams in the league, and it felt like a good game to be involved in,” explained Nouble.

“We were up for it, and I’m sure they were, but the result has gone their way.

“We played well, and anyone who was here today and watched the game, I’m sure they will have enjoyed it, as a neutral or even as a supporter.

“It’s just frustrating to lose a game like that, but at the same time it is only January and we know where we want to be at the end of the season, so we have to keep working.

“The first-half performance, and the performance of the first 10 minutes of the second half, was very positive, against a good side.

“We are a good team, and we will keep going to the end, which is what we did late on, looking for that equaliser.

“Whether people don’t believe in us, or they do, it doesn’t matter, because we will keep going and will keep working,

“I am sure we will come back from this - it’s just frustrating at this moment in time,” added Nouble.

Former Ipswich Town forward Nouble is happy that the U’s are continuing to create a hat-ful of chances, and if Sammie Szmodics’ opportunity at the start of the second half, when he headed wide with the U’s 2-0 up, had gone in then perhaps the game would have been put beyond Mansfield.

“Sammie had a couple of shots, and normally if he has three he scores at least one of them,” continued Nouble.

“But it’s a team game, we win together and we lose together.

“The main thing is that we keep creating chances, and if we play like that we will beat more teams than we lose to.

“It’s hard, every game is different, like when we were losing 3-1 to Notts County (3-3 draw) the other day, they probably thought the same thing as us, hoping not to concede.

“Today, it felt like their goals came when they weren’t on top - they just scored them - it’s down to us, we have to take ownership of that.

“They scored three very similar goals as well, tap-ins from crosses.”
