Mansfield Town’s U18 bowed out of the FA Youth Cup in Round 3 at Premier League AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium this evening. The Stags deservedly led 1-0 at the break, but were beaten by goals on 67 and 90 minutes to leave the players, management and Stags fans gutted at the final whistle. The Stags were superb in the first half, putting in a dominant performance and leading through a goal from Noah Stokes after 15 minutes. But the Stags had plenty of other chances with Tyrese Sinclair in outstanding form, and Jimmy Knowles hitting the underside of the bar. Sinclair won numerous free kicks with his trickery, and had several impressive shots at goal from distance. He looked special, and it was easy to see why he was on the bench for the Checkatrade Trophy game against Scunthorpe. At the other end Stags keeper Keaton Marrs made two fine saves for the Stags in the first half but Bournemouth created little else. The second half saw Bournemouth come much more into the game and they were marginally on top when they equalised on 67 minutes from a corner. After that, Bournemouth were right on top as the Stags players possibly tired, but it was cruel on the Stags that Bournemouth nicked the winner on the stroke of 90 minutes as Christian Saydee fired into the bottom corner of the net from inside the box. Heart-breaking for the Stags players who had given everything and over the course of the 90 minutes didn’t deserve to be beaten. Every single Stags player can be proud of their performance here. At the back Jordan Armsden and Jamie Chisholm both caught the eye with some superb defending, while Noah Stokes took the plaudits for his goal. Behind them, Keaton Marrs made some fine saves. The entire midfield played well, as the Stags controlled the first half, and Larrell King demonstrated a huge long throw. Up front Knowles and Riley O’Sullivan worked hard, with Knowles unfortunate to be denied by the underside of the bar, though credit to the Bournemouth keeper for getting something on his shot. After the game, Stags youth team boss John Dempster told us he was proud of the players, but the side had paid for missing first half chances. The side are back in action against Chesterfield at the weekend, while the first team are at Forest Green Rovers.

Man of the match: Tyrese Sinclair

Blow by blow report:

It’s the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

The Stags U18 youth team are at Premier League AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium Dean Court.

Unless I’m mistaken, I think this is the first time a Stags side has played at a Premier League ground since the FA Cup tie at Newcastle in 2006.

It’s a big night for the Stags youngsters.

The Stags have so far knocked out Grimsby and Chester to get this far.

AFC Bournemouth’s U18 side are unbeaten in 13 games. This is Bournemouth’s first game in the competition this season, as Premier League and Championship clubs come in at round 3. In the league, they sit in second place in the EFL Youth Alliance South West Division.

Mansfield meanwhile are in second place in the EFL Youth Alliance North East Division.

It’s pretty windy down here on the coast today.

Mansfield make one change from the side that started in the last round against Chester. Noah Stokes comes in for Joao Rangel.

It’s a 3-4-1-2 formation as follows:
Keaton Marrs;
Noah Stokes, Jamie Chisholm, Jordan Armsden;
Larrell King, Jack Cornell, James Tague, Kian Sketchley;
Tyrese Sinclair;
Jimmy Knowles, Riley O’Sullivan.

Subs: Jamie Boyle, Rio Molyneaux, Nathan Saunders, Joao Rangel, Rhys Sarson.

Bournemouth line up as:
13 Calum Ward, 2 Brooklyn Genesini, 3 Tom Hanfrey, 4 Tom Dinsmore, 5 Brennan Camp, 6 Zeno Ibsen Rossi, 7 Jake Cope, 8 Luke Nippard, 9 Jake Scrimshaw, 10 Christian Saydee, 11 Nathan Clements.

2 mins First chance of the game as Cornell fires a powerful shot just over the angle of crossbar and post for the Stags. 0-0

3 mins Scrimshaw heads wide for Bournemouth from Genesini’s cross. 0-0

5 mins Tyrese Sinclair sends a free kick from 25 yards just wide of the right post for the Stags. Good effort. 0-0

8 mins Long throw-in from Larrell King for the Stags but there’s a foul in the box so it’s wasted. I’m told they’ve been working on long throws, and King clearly possesses a long throw.

10 mins Stags keeper Marrs is booked for a foul outside his box. Not the best challenge.

13 mins Super tackle from Armsden for the Stags prevents a Cherries breakaway.

15 mins 0-1 Noah Stokes puts Mansfield in front. Sinclair is brought down 25 yards from goal. Sinclair takes the free kick himself, Stokes heads goalwards, it’s saved on the line by the keeper, but Stokes knocks in the rebound.

16 mins Great save by Stags keeper Marrs from Scrimshaw

17 mins Knowles is clean through on goal for Mansfield. His shot is deflected by the keeper onto the underside of the bar and away. Unbelievable.

18 mins Another great save from Stags keeper Marrs, tipping over a shot from Cope. This is end to end stuff.

25 mins Sinclair wins another free kick 25 yards from goal. Sinclair takes the free kick and smacks it straight to the keeper. Sinclair looks terrific this evening. 0-1

36 mins Larrell King threads a super ball into the area for Sinclair but Sinclair shoots straight at the the keeper.

37 mins Sinclair sends in another free kick from 25 yards, well held by the keeper. He strikes some ball does Sinclair. 0-1.

38 mins James Tague crosses from the right, Sinclair sends an overhead kick just over the bar. Spectacular effort though the offside flag is up. 0-1 The Stags very much the better side so far. Sinclair looks special, easy to see why he was on the bench for the Checkatrade Trophy game against Scunthorpe.

45+1 mins A long throw from King comes out to Sinclair whose blockbuster shot is blocked.

Half time AFC Bournemouth 0-1 Mansfield. A superb first half from Mansfield who have dominated the game at the Vitality Stadium and lead through a goal from Noah Stokes after 15 minutes. But the Stags have had plenty of other chances with Tyrese Sinclair in outstanding form, and Jimmy Knowles hitting the underside of the bar. Keaton Marrs made two fine saves for the Stags but Bournemouth have created little else. The Stags much the better side on the evidence of the first 45 minutes, but plenty of time to go.

48 mins Brilliant defending from Jamie Chisholm as Bournemouth‘s Scrimshaw breaks and threatens to get through 1-on-1.

50 mins Jack Cornell meets a corner on the volley for the Stags but miscues his effort and there’s no power on it.

52 mins Great block by Kian Sketchley as Bournemouth break after Sketchley himself had lost the ball.

53 mins A shot for Bournemouth as Saydee drags a shot wide from 18 yards. 0-1

56 mins A corner from the right by the Stags is met on the volley by Sinclair but saved on the line. Straight to the other end and Scrimshaw shoots wide from 16 yards for Bournemouth.

61 mins A free kick from Bournemouth’s Hanfrey is only just wide from 28 yards. Bournemouth marginally on top in the second half. 0-1

63 mins Great tackle at the back by Armsden.

1-1 67 mins Bournemouth level. Hanfrey’s corner from the right is headed in by Scrimshaw.

71 mins Great save by Stags keeper Marrs from Cope’s effort from 8 yards.

74 mins Marrs saves low by his near post from a long range shot.

74 mins Stags SUB: Rhys Sarson for Cornell.

80 mins Stags free kick from 32 yards. Sinclair tries his luck and it’s over the bar.

83 mins Yellow card for Sinclair for a foul.

86 mins Bournemouth corner straight into the side netting. 1-1

87 mins Great block from Stags’ Chisholm as Scrimshaw shoots from 16 yards

2-1 90 mins Bournemouth take the lead. Saydee fires into the bottom corner.

Gutting.

90+1 Stags sub Rio Molyneaux for King.

90+3 Stags free kick from 28 yards. Sinclair on target but the keeper saves.

FT 2-1 to Bournemouth.

Young guns a ‘credit’ to club - Dempster
mansfieldtown.net, Wed 12 Dec 2018

Youth manager John Dempster says his team are ‘an absolute credit’ following last night’s spirited performance against Bournemouth in the FA Youth Cup third round.

Mansfield went 1-0 up in the clash through defender Noah Stokes, yet bowed out after a last-minute winner from Cherries’ forward Christian Saydee at Vitality Stadium.

Dempster highly praised the effort his charges showed in the narrow defeat.

Speaking after Wednesday night’s game, he said: “Today I wouldn’t be critical of anybody; they absolutely ran their socks off for the football club and they are an absolute credit to each other as a team.

“I’m really disappointed for them because in the changing room right now there’s a lot of disappointed young players.

“It was a good performance; we were excellent first half, we caused Bournemouth all sorts of problems and they struggled to play out.

“But they scored a goal from a set play and unfortunately, we conceded in the last minute which we’re disappointed with.

“It’s part of their learning. We need to learn to bounce back from this because we’ve got some important league games coming up but I’m really proud of the football club.”

Dempster spoke about the ‘brilliant experience’ his players gained from travelling to face a team preparing players for the Premier League.

“We travelled down yesterday on the first team coach and stayed over in a hotel, so the preparation was never in question,” he added.

“It’s a brilliant experience for these boys to have an overnight stay and see what it’s all about.

“They should be proud. They’ve come up against a Premier League outfit in terms of Bournemouth as a football club who are trying to get players in the Premier League, whereas we are trying to get players into League Two.

“It’s important that they learn how to bounce back from a massive disappointment, but they’ve got to use it to fuel them. They have to use it to motivate them [because] that’s what a senior pro would do.”

Stags’ under-18s are next in action on Saturday 15 December, when they travel to face Chesterfield under-18s at St George’s Park Graves (11am kick-off).

Stags unlucky in slender loss, says defender
mansfieldtown.net, Wed 12 Dec 2018

Youth defender Jordan Armsden believes Stags’ under-18s were ‘unlucky’ not to progress to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite taking the lead through Noah Stokes, the Stags conceded in the dying minutes of the game as the hosts sparked a second half comeback, finding the winning goal in the 90th minute through Christian Saydee.

Speaking after Wednesday night’s clash, Armsden praised the team’s performance, yet reflected on the chances missed in the contest.

“We played well,” he said. “We started the game well going 1-0 up but we lost our shape a bit in the second half and unfortunately conceded two goals which lost us the game. But, I think on the whole, the boys played really well.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2018/december/armsden-post-bournemouth/

“I feel like if we had taken our chances then maybe it would have given us more of a chance later in the game, but obviously it’s unlucky. Jimmy Knowles is unlucky as he’s through one-on-one and the ‘keeper makes a good save.”

When asked how he thought the experience would help him as a player, he replied: “I think it will help me develop my game management late on in the game.

“Then, obviously when you go 2-1 down and it’s late on in the game, learning how to come back from that again.”

The youth team face local rivals Chesterfield on Saturday in a big game for the squad, who Armsden says want to bounce back following the defeat in Bournemouth.

“I think we’re doing quite well [this season] to be fair. We just need to keep at it, keep getting wins and clean sheets.

“We’ve got to pick ourselves up from the loss today [Wednesday] and then go again on Saturday, keep up the high pressing again and then try and hopefully get more goals and a clean sheet.”

Stags’ under-18s, who sit second in the EFL Youth Alliance table, are set face the Spireites’ under-18s at St George’s Park Graves (11am kick-off) on Saturday 15 December in their next league fixture.

Late strike snatches win for Cherries in FA Youth Cup third round

ALAN Connell admitted he had "mixed feelings" after Cherries came from behind late on to progress in the FA Youth Cup.

Jake Scrimshaw levelled with his head from a corner to cancel out Noah Stokes's opener for Mansfield in the third-round tie at Vitality Stadium.

The game looked set for extra-time until Christian Saydee snatched the 2-1 win for the home side in the 90th minute after neat play from skipper Brennan Camp and Scrimshaw.

Cherries' victory in front of a crowd of 241, including Eddie Howe and a host of first-team staff, secured a trip to Youth Alliance South West rivals Oxford United.

Boss Connell, whose side exited the competition at the fourth-round stage last season, said it was a game of two halves. "Overall there are mixed feelings but we are delighted to go through," said Connell.

"In the first half we were poor. I did not recognise the players and the team that I have seen all season. "It was difficult because Mansfield pressed us high and the wind was strong, but we spoke before the game about trusting what we do and sticking to our principles. We did it to a point, but it was nowhere near good enough.

"Some words were spoken at half-time about where we could do better and making sure the occasion did not get to us. I was pleased with the response in the second half. "The boys showed they have a great attitude and character. We have scored a lot of late goals this season. We keep going and the fitness levels are great. "It is a fantastic feeling to score a last minute winner."
