Crewe Alexandra 0 - 3 Mansfield Town Elsnik 6, 35, Walker 61 Attendance: 2973 (300 from Mansfield, official figure, PLUS others who arrived late due to traffic) Date: 30 October 2018 Martin Shaw at Gresty Road Mansfield Town produced a cracking all round performance to win 3-0 at Crewe last night, with two first half goals from Timi Elsnik and one in the second half from Tyler Walker. It was Mansfield’s first win at Crewe since 1991, a game in which Phil Stant scored his first goal for Mansfield, and in a season when the Stags went on to be promoted. Crewe came into this game unbeaten for 4 games but were completely outplayed as the Stags were pretty much on top from start to finish. The Stags are now unbeaten in 11 away games, which is the new the club record, beating the 10 unbeaten away games set in the Conference in 2011. The Stags were ahead on 6 minutes as Elsnik fired into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the area after Walker laid off into his path from Neal Bishop’s ball forward. Elsnik’s second came on 35 minutes. The ball reached Elsnik 25 yards goal following a tackle on Danny Rose by George Ray. Elsnik took one touch forward and smashed a shot into the top left corner of the net from just inside the area. Mansfield sealed the game on 61 minutes with a third goal. Jacob Mellis, who had a very good game, slid a superb ball forward into the path of CJ Hamilton on the left, Hamilton got to the byline, pulled the ball across and Walker flicked a back-heel into the net from close range. Great play from Mellis, a good cross from Hamilton, and a clever finish from Walker, reminiscent of one of his goals against Accrington. The Stags defended well, Bobby Olejnik made three good saves and Crewe were never allowed a sniff of getting into the game. Elsnik nearly completed his hat-trick on 84 minutes when he worked some space on the edge of the area and curled a shot towards the left corner of the net, but keeper Ben Garrett denied him with a fine diving save. A tough call to choose a man of the match, but it has to be Elsnik for me for his two super goals and good all round performance. Plenty of star performances throughout the side including Mellis, who was excellent, Krystian Pearce, Matt Preston, Bishop, and Olejnik who made good saves when called upon. The Stags are 3 points behind the play-offs with 1 game in hand. Another away game on Saturday as Mansfield visit Cheltenham. The Stags made two changes from the side that drew with MK Dons. Ryan Sweeney was suspended after picking up five bookings. By the way, Mal Benning is one booking away from suspension having picked up four yellow cards this season (plus one in the Carabao Cup and one in the Checkatrade Trophy, but they do not count towards league suspensions this season). Sweeney was replaced by Hayden White, who was a welcome returner from injury. Otis Khan missed out with an Achilles problem picked up in the first half against MK Dons, and was replaced by Elsnik, who had been unlucky to lose his place previously. White was on the right of the back three, with Preston on the left. Crewe made one change from the side that beat Grimsby. Perry Ng returned from suspension and replaced former Stags defender Nicky Hunt. It was a cold dry evening in Crewe. A number of Stags fans were delayed by a bad accident on the A50 between Uttoxeter and Stoke. They finally arrived during the first half, though some turned round and went home. I think the official following of 300 did not include those who arrived late. The Derby County loanee, who Stags’ boss David Flitcroft also took to Swindon Town last term, hit a first-half double with Tyler Walker also getting on the scoresheet to extend the club’s unbeaten run on the road to six this season. But the result also established a new overall club record of 11 away games without defeat for Mansfield Town, beating the 10 games run set in the Conference in 2011. They recently beat their Football League record of nine games. It was the second brace of Elsnik’s budding career, with the first also coming against the Railwaymen whilst playing for Swindon last term. Mansfield used one of their vital games in hand to great effect to put themselves just three points behind the top seven in ninth place. Flitcroft made two changes for the clash at Crewe Alexandra’s Gresty Road as Hayden White and Elsnik replaced Ryan Sweeney and Otis Khan. The super Stags made a fast start to proceedings as Elsnik fired home a sweetly struck left-footed strike off the post after six minutes. Flitcroft’s charges then had to sit back and weather a storm after going ahead. Charlie Kirk and Callum Ainley both failed to test Bobby Olejnik as they both missed the target. Down the other end Elsnik’s daisy-cutter free-kick was easily claimed by Ben Garratt. Christopher Hamilton then saw a tame effort stopped by Railwaymen stopper Garratt. Shaun Miller should have done better from Harry Pickering’s pin-point drilled cross. It was two 10 minutes before the break with Elsnik finding the top corner with a second super strike. Garratt recovered from being wrong-footed to keep out Walker’s deflected shot. On the stroke of the interval Olejnik made a cracking stop Jordan Bowery. Just after the hour Walker dented any hopes of a revival with a calm finish after Hamilton’s searing pace down the left. And Hamilton almost struck a fourth moments later when he fired wide. Olejnik kept a third clean sheet in four games alive with a great save from Ainley’s effort on the turn. Krystian Pearce received treatment on the pitch after a nasty knock but carried on, and Elsnik came close to claiming a memorable hat-trick five minutes from time, with Garratt pulling off a good save. The actual scoreline probably does not tell the entire story of the overall game with Crewe having good chances of their own - none more so than Shaun Miller with the score at 1-0 to the visitors at the time. Crewe also had chances in the second half with Callum Ainley disappointed not to have at least scored his first goal of the season and defender George Ray forcing Bobby Olejnik into a decent save with a firm header from a corner. In his absence against the Mariners, the veteran Nicky Hunt performed admirably again alongside Captain Ray but had to settle for a place on the bench. Before kick-off there was an impeccably held one minute silence to remember those so tragically killed in Saturday’s helicopter crash outside Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium. The players also wore black armbands in respect of the five lives that were lost on Saturday night. Mansfield have only lost one game this season and before this evening, Crewe’s only defeat had been a narrow one in the local derby against Port Vale. It was expected to be a tight affair but the game began at an intense pace and chances were soon forthcoming. Shaun Miller, who was arguably Crewe’s most lively performer in the first period, soon poked a difficult chance wide of the near post before the visitors stuck in only the 6th minute. Crewe stood off and then backed off Elsnik and the talented loanee from Derby County did not need a second invitation, driving a low shot past Garratt from the edge of the Crewe box. It was the perfect start for David Flitcroft’s Stags but the early set-back didn’t hampen Crewe's desire to attack. Almost immediately a really tempting cross from Charlie Kirk only needed a decisive touch and then Ray and Ng almost combined at a corner to force home an equaliser. Crewe continued to play some good stuff and Kirk spun and shot over the top of the Mansfield Town crossbar before Bowery tried to power his way past Matt Preston but was penalised for pulling as he entered the box. It was Crewe asking much of the questions and we presented a threat from corners, but that final ball just didn’t quite drop for us. There were a few melees inside the Mansfield penalty area before Miller wasted our best chance of the first half. Kirk was the provider again from the left hand side and his cross found Miller, who you would have backed to just side foot home from close range, but uncharacteristically he sent it wide of the target. Mansfield always posed a threat though with their pace and directness in attack. Ray had a luck escape on the half an hour mark when trying to allow the ball to bounce over the touchline. Walker nipped around the Crewe centre-half and nodded the ball down and towards goal. Garratt sharpened his angles in anticipation of a cross shot, but Walker chose the near post and could only drag it wastefully into the side netting. An entertaining game continued to be open and Crewe were just lacking that final quality ball after some good passing and movement. After Ainley had won a free-kick from Bishop, a well worked shot free-kick saw Pickering roll the ball across to Jones but he just lifted his shot over the crossbar. Despite Crewe’s pressure and pressing in search of a leveller, it was Mansfield Town who delivered a sucker punch. They had a little rub of the green when Danny Rose went over in the build-up - but the referee played a key advantage to allow the play to continue. The ball bounced invitingly into the path of Elsnik and he made no mistake with a thunderous shot past Garratt for his second goal of the evening. For all their effort and endeavour, Crewe found themselves 2-0 down heading to the break, mainly due to Mansfield’s clinical finishing. The Alex tried to give themselves a lifeline before the interval with Miller robbing Bishop in a dangerous position, but after he had found winger Kirk, his shot was too tame and too close to the onrushing Olejnik. There was still time for Garratt to make an excellent save after a shot from Walker took a wicked deflection. The Alex goalkeeper had been heading in the wrong direction but he adjusted his feet superbly to get down and make a one handed save. The next goal in the contest was going to be crucial and Crewe desperately needed it to keep our chances of a result alive. Corey Whelan had an early opportunity that forced Olejnik to push his effort away. The Crewe striker was also a touch unlucky not to get a positive touch on a tempting cross from Pickering after he had cleverly used Kirk’s outside run as a decoy. It was just that final touch or piece of quality lacking. In search of that all-important next goal, David Artell introduced Oli Finney for Jones and the youngster was certainly eager to get on the ball and pass forward. He was also a willing runner into the opposition half of the pitch and he impressed in only his fifth appearance of the season. Hayden White headed a yard wide of the Crewe goal from a corner before they eventually killed the game off in the just after the hour mark. CJ Hamilton demonstrated great pace to get beyond Whelan and Walker beat the Crewe defenders to his low cross to smuggle it over the line. At 3-0, the game was over as a contest and Mansfield went on to control the proceedings. CJ Hamilton shot just wide after we backed off him, properly fearful of his turn of pace and Rose was a constant nuisance to the Crewe centre-halves, both of whom were booked in the game. To their credit, Crewe continued to mount attacks. Ainley forced Olejnik into a fine one handed save after he caught a shot on the turn superbly well and he really should have scored when after more good work from Pickering, the ball fell to him 10 yards out but he frustratingly dragged his low shot wide of the post. He was replaced by Alex Nicholls on 71 minutes. Ray forced the Mansfield goalkeeper into a good save with an accurate header as the Stags looked to protect their clean-sheet. The match winner, Elsnik, who scored twice as a Swindon player against Crewe last season, nearly registered his first career hat-trick after he twisted and turned in on the edge of our box but Garratt watched his intentions well to save his curling shot. He would be denied the three goals but not the three points on a night where Mansfield Town showed their clinical and professional edge in South Cheshire. ----------- |
