Defender Johnny Hunt has joined Stevenage on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old made 18 league appearances for the Stags last season after signing from Chester City.

“Johnny is a great professional and a fantastic kid,” said manager David Flitcroft.

“He asked me if I could guarantee him first team football, which I couldn’t, so he’s taken the opportunity offered at Stevenage.

“Mal Benning is the first choice left back at the football club and is the type of player I want to work with. I see so much potential in Mal.

“We have young Henri Wilder coming though the system who has impressed and Johnny’s position in the squad may have stopped the progression of a good youth team player coming through"

The club places on record its thanks to Johnny and wishes him well in his future career.

Hunt on his immediate thoughts…
“I am looking forward to it. I came down and met the manager, seen the training ground here which was a big factor, and what the manager is putting together - I am looking forward to it.”

“He has (the manager) told me about a few of the signings we are going to make and it is a really decent squad he is putting together, so I am really excited.”

Hunt on first day of pre-season testing...
“It was tough. I don’t like pre-season but it has got to be done. We (defenders) were in today so it was good to get to know them, and the other lads will be in tomorrow and Wednesday. Then we are all in Thursday but it is good to get the first day out of the way and I am now just looking forward it.

Hunt on his plans for the season...
“I am a winner, basically. I like to win at all costs. I will let them judge how they want to judge me. I will just give everything for the team and if I’m picked to play I will give it my all.

“I was in-and-out of the team at Mansfield so I was a bit frustrating, so I want to come here and prove I can play every game and be a part of something special, and hopefully achieve things.”
