CLIPSTONE 2-2 MANSFIELD
13th July 2016 11:46

Pre-Season Friendly
Clipstone 2 - 2 Mansfield Town
Brissett 7. Littlejohn 82. Rose 34, Yussuf 52.
Attendance: 364

Date: 9 July 2016

Martin Shaw at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone

Half of the Stags first team squad got three-quarters of a game at local non-league step 6 side Clipstone this lunchtime. The Stags first team were leading 2-1 when they were replaced by essentially a youth team/U21 side plus new first team coach Karl Hawley. The game finished 2-2, after an 82nd minute Clipstone equaliser against the young Stags. Mansfield had plenty of the ball for the first 68 minutes, but should have done better with it on plenty of occasions, though they had plenty of shots blocked. A cracking goal from Mitch Rose, and an excellent effort from Hoban from a Yussuf cross which was disallowed were the highlights of the first half. Earlier Clipstone had taken the lead on 7 minutes against the run of play with a fine curling shot over Shearer from 20 yards after a mistake by Hamilton. Adi Yussuf put Mansfield 2-1 in front on 52 minutes with a turn and shot. Hoban looked good for Mansfield, and a trialist right back was tidy, albeit with one or two crosses not beating the first man. Once young Danquah did not look out of place at left back. In truth this wasn’t a great performance from Mansfield, but these pre-season friendlies, especially early ones, are more about getting fitness than anything else, so it can be misleading to read too much into them.

On to non-league step 4 side Carlton Town now, and the rest of the first team squad will get a run out (kick-off 4pm).

MORE REFLECTIONS:
There were plenty of positives on show. New striker Pat Hoban really caught the eye with a strong showing, good in the air, a fine shot that hit the woodwork, a flying volley into the net that was disallowed, and generally good link-up play. He looked like the type of player the Stags missed last season with Chris Beardsley never fully fit during the whole season. Adi Yussuf reminded us of his finishing skills with a good goal, and looked strong and fit. There was also a cracking goal from Mitch Rose from long distance. And, as at Rainworth a week earlier, young Louis Danquah, who has just signed pro terms at the club, did not look out of place at left back.

DETAILED REPORT:
Heavy rain for a couple of hours before kick-off, but the pitch is in good condition.

Stags team (4-4-2, diamond formation midfield, full-backs pushing forward a lot, and Chapman dropping back a lot):

Trialist right-back no.18, Jamie McGuire, Corbin Shires, Louis Danquah;
Adam Chapman,
Mitch Rose, CJ Hamilton,
James Baxendale;
Pat Hoban, Adi Yussuf.

1 min. Shot by Hoban, blocked on the line.
3 Hoban shot against inside of post and underside of bar, out to Yussuf, shot blocked on line. How didn’t Mansfield score there?
4 Cross from Hamilton struck a hand but penalty appeals waved away
5 Baxendale miscued a shot wide
7 mins GOAL 1-0 to Clipstone. Scott Shearer passes out to Hamilton 30 yards from goal. Hamilton is bundled off the ball allowing Martin Brissett to take a few steps towards goal and curl a shot over Shearer from 20 yards. A goal against the run of play.
8 Baxendale fires across face of goal. McGuire shouts “you should have scored there”
9 Hamilton inside to Hoban, onto his left foot, shot blocked. Clipstone straight to other end, shot from Clipstone no.11 Littlejohn shanked through to Shearer.
11 Good ball forward from Mitch Rose to Yussuf in box, Yussuf turns one way then the other but can’t get a shot in when he should have done.
14 Good run from Yussuf from inside his own half but he’s fouled.
16 Good play from Hoban getting the ball out to the trialist no.18 on the right, whose cross into the middle is deflected to the keeper.
21 Mitch Rose gave the ball away on halfway line but clever block from McGuire to snuff out danger
21 Good play from Hoban to get the ball to Yussuf on the right, his cross is cleared.
22 Long range shot from Clipstone’s Forbes is wide of the right post.
26 Mitch Rose fouled 30 yards from goal. Chapman free kick into the top of the wall.
30 Yussuf dribbles past two but misses opportunity to find Hoban in space on right.
31 Stags corner from right by Baxendale, keeper tries to punch, only comes to Hoban whose shot is blocked.
33 Good interplay between trialist no.18 and Baxendale on the right, cross in, but no-one can get a shot away.
34 mins GOAL 1-1 Stags level as Mitch Rose fires a low shot from 35 yards into the bottom right corner. Super shot.
37 Trialist no.18 did well to get a cross in from the right, the ball fell to Yussuf who fired wide of the left post from 10 yards.
40 Yussuf teed up Hoban whose shot was blocked.
40 mins DISALLOWED GOAL Great cross from Yussuf on the left, Hoban meets it with a flying volley into the net from 6 yards, but the offside flag goes up. That was very good play though.
44 Great ball from Hoban to Hamilton, Hamilton shot saved low down by keeper, out to Yussuf who had a shot blocked and then another deflected wide. From the resulting corner from Baxenddale on the right. Mitch Rose headed powerfully over.

HALF TIME 1-1

Mansfield have had plenty of the ball in the first half, but should have done better with it on plenty of occasions, though they have had plenty of shots blocked. A cracking goal from Mitch Rose, and an excellent effort from Hoban from a Yussuf cross which was disallowed were the highlights. Earlier Clipstone had taken the lead on 7 minutes against the run of play with a fine curling shot over Shearer from 20 yards after a mistake by Hamilton. Hoban has had a good half for Mansfield, and the trialist right back no.18 has been tidy albeit with one or two crosses not beating the first man.

HT sub: Cameron Healey, sub on at right back, a youth teamer who’s been training with the first team, comes on for trialist no.18. Healey came on as sub at Rainworth last week at centre half

Baxendale and Hamilton now seem to be more on the wing, with Chapman alongside Mitch Rose in central midfield.

47 Hoban inside to Baxendale who fires wide of the left post from inside the area. Good tee-up by Hoban.
52 mins GOAL 1-2 Stags in front as Adi Yussuf receives the ball from a throw-in, turns and fires into the net, right footed from 9 yards.
53 A ball forward from Chapman, and good play from Hoban setting up Hamilton for a shot from the left which he puts into the side-netting.
60 Baxendale fired over the bar from 20 yards after being set up by Yussuf.
61 sub Karl Hawley for Pat Hoban. Hawley of course was recently appointed first team coach.
63 Hamilton receives the ball from a corner, makes some space for a shot from the right, but fires well wide of the left post.
66 Shot from Clipstone’s Nodder well-blocked by Shires.
68 Five subs: Baxendale, Yussuf, Hamilton, Chapman, Mitch Rose off. 5 youth teamers/U21 on. So Shearer, McGuire, Shires, Danquah still on.
69 Karl Hawley has a shot blocked, and curls the rebound straight at the keeper from the edge of the box.
71 Four subs: Shearer, Shires, McGuire and Danquah off. 4 youth teamers/U21 on.
Tyler Blake is on, he’s just signed pro terms, as did Danquah.
77 Karl Hawley has a chance to play in Tyler Blake for a free shot at goal but his pass is blocked.
82 mins GOAL 2-2 Clipstone ball out to Littlejohn on the right and he fired underneath the Stags youth keeper into the net.
Attendance is announced as 364. Probably a little less than it would have been if the weather hadn’t been so wet this morning.

All square at Clipstone in Stags’ first friendly of the day
chad.co.uk report by John Lomas, Saturday 09 July 2016

Mansfield Town’s first pre-season friendly of the day finished in a 2-2 draw at NCEL Premier Division neighbours Clipstone.

The Stags played a strong side, though half a dozen of them probably won’t start the season, and were forced to come from behind after conceding an early goal against the run of play.

Mitch Rose and Adi Yussuf then netted to make it 2-1 before substitutions left a very youthful Stags side to concede a late goal as the impressive Cobras grabbed the draw.

After a morning’s heavy rain, the pitch played surprisingly well and, with the rain finally stopping just before the noon kick-off, the match ended in bright sunshine.

With an unnamed trialist at right back, Stags had Adam Chapman pulling the strings in front of the back four with Jamie McGuire also hugely influential at centre half.

But star man of the first half was Irish striker Pat Hoban, who was neat and tidy in his work, held the ball up well and almost scored.

Stags were swarming all over the home goal from the kick-off and Rob Paling cleared off the line from Pat Hoban after just two minutes.

A minute later a long Hoban cross from the left hit the far angle and Yussuf saw his follow-up saved.

Baxendale then scuffed a chance wide before Stags were rocked by a Clipstone goal with their first real attack on seven minutes as Martin Brissett judged a superb chip to perfection to give Shearer no chance.

Baxendale fired another low chance wide of the far post, but the home side were finally spending some time in the visitors’ half and Reece Littlejohn sent a low shot at Shearer while Nathan Forbes swerved a powerful effort wide.

However, Stags were level on 34 minutes as Rose let fly with a fine low shot from almost 35 yards that beat keeper Steve Hernandez.

Stags should have gone in ahead as Clipstone’s goal led a charmed life.

Yussuf scuffed a good chance wide from close in, then Hoban had a fine first time finish from a Yussuf cross ruled out for offside on 40 minutes.

In the final minute CJ Hamilton’s low shot from the left was saved, and Yussuf saw his first follow-up blocked and his second sail wide.

Rose headed powerfully over from a corner for the final chance as the sides went in locked at 1-1.

Youth teamer Cameron Healey replaced the trialist at right back for the second half.

Within two minutes Hoban pulled back a neat pass into Baxendale’s path, but the midfielder pulled his finish wide.

On 57 minutes Yussuf finally got his sights right and powerfully shielded the ball before turning and burying a good finish inside the near post from 10 yards.

Soon after Hoban set up Hamilton, but he passed a finish into the left sidenetting.

Baxendale was too high after being set up by Yussuf on the hour.

A minute later new first team coach Hawley had a run out up front, replacing Hoban.

Hamilton thundered another effort over the top from right of goal in Mansfield’s next chance.

Shires did well to get his body in the way of a Nodder blast as the ball ran loose on 66 minutes in a rare Cobras chance.

Two minutes later Chapman, Rose, Baxendale, Hamilton and Yussuf were replaced by youth teamers.

Hawley had his first sight of goal but saw his first effort blocked and follow-up curled into the keeper’s hands.

On 71 minutes Danquah, McGuire, Shires and Shearer were all replaced by youth teamers too.

That was the spur for the home side to push forward and level on 82 minutes as Littlejohn got into the box on the right and blasted a low shot underneath the keeper from a tight angle.
