BURTON Albion have appointed former Mansfield Town striker Chris Beardsley as their new fitness coach.

Jack Sharkey, Albion's head of sport science, left the club a fortnight ago to join up with previous Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at Queens Park Rangers.

Sharkey will be linking back up with assistant manager David Oldfield and goalkeeping coach Gavin Ward and will be returning to the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday, July 26, when the Rs visit Albion for a friendly match.

Beardsley was released by League Two club Mansfield Town over the summer, a decision manager Adam Murray described as one of the toughest of his managerial career.

The 32-year-old Derby-born coach - who is in a non-playing role - has been taking Albion through their pre-season routine at St George's Park and manager Nigel Clough is pleased to have the former Preston North End man at the club.

"Chris Beardsley has come in," Clough confirmed. "He's in his early 30s, he's a local lad and into the sports science and fitness side of things.

"We're delighted he's come on board and he's fitted straight in, to replace Jack. He'll work alongside (physio) Nick Fenton."

Matt Brown has also returned to the Brewers and will support Fenton.
