Moore believes Stags’ intensity was key to Stevenage win
mansfieldtown.net, 9th January 2016

Mansfield Town first team coach Micky Moore was keen to highlight the positive start and high intensity of the Stags’ side in today’s 2-1 win over Stevenage.

Goals from midfielder Chris Clements and new signing James Baxendale secured three points for the Stags, despite Arman Gnanduillet’s late consolation.

After conceding the first goal in three of the last four games, Moore was pleased to see the Stags start the match ‘on the front foot’ and press Teddy Sheringham’s Stevenage side with a high intensity.

“I think our intensity was very good today. I think we started a lot better than we have done over the previous weeks.

“Our intensity to close down off the ball was good, with the ball, we passed it and moved it a lot better and created a fair few chances - you look at Mitch Rose’s header at the back post and Matt Green’s header and we had other opportunities,” said Moore.

“Craig Westcarr’s had a chance and the ‘keeper’s pulled off a good save, so we created good opportunities today. We felt we passed it a lot better and got on the front foot [more] than we have done in previous games.

“Over the last couple of weeks, we think our performances have been okay but we just haven’t managed to get that win. We’ve only lost one [out of] the last six so we knew if we maintained our performances, a result would come and it’s a good result.”

With the signing of Walsall man James Baxendale announced before kick-off, Moore was pleased with how he fit in to the Stags’ side and interlinked with his fellow attacking players.

“We signed James Baxendale and we knew that if we could get him into the ‘pockets’, he would add something to us.

“With Clem (Chris Clements) and Chappy (Adam Chapman) in there as well, holding the midfield, and with Westy (Craig Westcarr), Jack Thomas and Greeny (Matt Green), we thought we’d cause them a few problems with their movement.”

Moore continued: “He’s (Baxendale) a League One footballer - he’s played over 100 games in League One and he’s at a club who are flying high in League One and he’s found his minutes on the pitch quite limited at the moment and we feel we’ve captured a good loan signing who will add that little bit of quality in the final third and help us.”

With Moore emerging for the post-match interview in place of manager Adam Murray, the coach admitted that it’s been a ‘long week for everyone’.

“The gaffer is so intense in everything that he does. Every little bit helps and everything contributes to us getting a win - he’s emotionally drained at the moment!

“Everyone knows what he feels for this football club and what he stands for and, this week especially, it’s been a big week for us.”

The Birmingham-born man was pleased to see captain Nicky Hunt back in the starting lineup and says that the Stags will only add to their squad in the next month if they feel they need to.

“It’s good to get your captain back, it gives us that balance. Whether it’s Lee Collins or Mitch Rose who’ve filled in there, they’ve done adequately well but you want a square peg in a square hole, not a square peg in a round hole, which is what we’ve had over the last three or four weeks.

“We will take stock as we go along this month as to whether we need to add any more players. We don’t want to add players for the sake of adding players - we want to add quality to this squad - we think we’ve got a very good squad in terms of both numbers and quality.”

Micky Moore praises Mansfield Town’s work-rate after Stevenage win
chad.co.uk, by Stephen Thirkill, Saturday 09 January 2016

First team coach Micky Moore praised Mansfield Town’s intesity and work-rate after their impressive 2-1 win over Stevenage.

Stags took the lead through Clements’ 42 minute free-kick to cap a good half for the home side.

Michael Tonge hit the post with a free-kick for Stevenage before, the visitors had a penalty appeal turned down after a Fraser Franks shot was charged down by Krystian Pearce.

Mansfield doubled their lead when Baxendale fired a perfect effort past Chris Day on 65 minutes, before Armand Gnanduillet hit a consolation goal in stoppage time,

It was a win which Moore felt Stags, who moved up to eight in the table, thoroughly deserved.

“We felt our performances have been good of late, but the results have not gone our way,” he said.

“We have only lost one in six and we knew that if we maintained our performance levels we would get a win.

“Only time will tell what this win will do for our confidence, but it gives us something to build on.

“This was a very satisfying win. I thought our work-rate and intensity was good. We worked hard when we did not have the ball and we created chances.”

“It was important to get back to winnings ways on what has been an emotional week for the club.

“We all know what the club means to the gaffer, he puts his heart and soul into the club and he is drained right now.

“This was a big win for the players, fans and management.”

Moore was also full of praise for new loan signing Baxendale and free-kick specialist Chris Clements.

He added: “Baxendale is a player that we have been watching. He is a League One footballer and has got the quality we need,” he said.

“His game time has been limited at Walsall, but his quality speaks for itself.

“We changed our formation to a 4-2-3-1, which we felt would allow Baxendale to impose himself. The movement of our front four was excellent today.

“The pleasing thing is that we have plenty of options in terms of systems and formations, which we can explore.

“Clements has shown what he can do with free-kicks, it was a goal that we needed at the time and gave us a lift.”

Micky Moore believes new boy James Baxendale can fire Mansfield Town up the table
chad.co.uk, by Stephen Thirkill, Saturday 09 January 2016

Micky Moore believes new signing James Baxendale could give Mansfield Town the quality they need to climb the table.

The Stags pushed themselves back into the play-off reckoning with a comfortable 2-1 win over Stevenage.

Goals from Chris Clements and debutant James Baxendale wrapped up the points to end a run of four games without a win.

Stags took the lead through Clements’ 42 minute free-kick to cap a good half for the home side.

Stevenage’s best chance of the half came when Michael Tonge hit the post with a curling effort from 20 yards.

The visitors also had a penalty appeal turned down after a Fraser Franks shot was charged down by Krystian Pearce.

Mansfield doubled their lead when Baxendale fired a perfectly placed effort from distance past Chris Day on 65 minutes.

Armand Gnanduillet, on loan from Chesterfield, hit a consolation goal with the last kick of the game.

Mansfield Town first team coach Micky Moore praised the quality of Baxendale and the importance of the win.

“Baxendale is a player that we have been watching. He is a League One footballer and has got the quality we need,” he said.

“His game time has been limited at Walsall, but his quality speaks for itself.

“We felt our performances have been good of late, but the results have not gone our way.

“This was a very satisfying win. I thought our work-rate and intensity was good. We worked hard when we did not have the ball and we created chances.”

Stevenage boss Teddy Sheringham was left frustrated by what he saw as the poor refereering of David Webb

“Was it even a free-kick for their opener? It looked like the lad took a tumble but who knows if it was a free-kick,” he said.

“Our wall has been pushed back to 12 yards and I am not sure why. It is very disappointing to have lost a game when we were playing well in the first half.

“We should have had a penalty in the first half. We had an identical penalty go against us last week and, if that was a penalty, then this was a stonewall penalty,

“Everyone in the ground could see it was handball and it’s very disappointing. We are just not getting the rub of the green at the moment.

“They were dangerous on the break and the second was a sloppy goal to concede from our point of view. It left us with a mountain to climb, but we gave it a go.”

Baxendale praises team performance in win over Stevenage
mansfieldtown.net, 9th January 2016

New signing James Baxendale said he wants more of the same for the rest of his spell at One Call Stadium after scoring a superb second goal in this afternoon’s 2-1 win over Stevenage.

The attacking midfielder, whose arrival from Walsall was announced before kick-off, scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the Stags’ victory over Stevenage and was full of praise for his new team mates.

“It was a great touch from Greeny (Matt Green) to set me up for the goal. When you’re playing with players like that, it makes it a lot easier.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/article/baxendale-praises-team-performance-in-win-over-stevenage-2892649.aspx?

“The front four rotated well and obviously backed up by everyone else, I thought it was a good display.

“We had to get a grip into the game and I think we got a foothold and played some decent stuff [in the] first half and obviously [in the] second half [we] continued that.”

Baxendale has made over 100 senior appearances in his short career so far and has also scored some good goals along the way, something which Stags’ fans saw first-hand today.

“I’ve scored a few from outside the box and it’s something I want to get back to, so to do it on the first game is somewhere to start and something I want to continue.

“I’ll keep trying, so whether they go in or not is a different thing, but I’ll keep getting in there and I’ll keep trying.

“Looking at the table before the game, I really wanted to kick on to get the three points. Obviously to finish off with a goal for myself, it couldn’t have gone much better really.”

Walsall loan man James Baxendale hails perfect debut after hitting winner for Mansfield Town
chad.co.uk, by Stephen Thirkill, Saturday 09 January 2016

Loan man James Baxendale hailed a perfect Mansfield Town debut and promised there is more to come.

Baxendale hit a memorable long-range winner just hours after joining on a month’s loan from Walsall to cap a superb performance in Stags’ 2-1 win over Stevenage.

“I’ve scored a few spectacular goals before and it is something I am wanting to get back in my game,” he said.

http://www.hucknalldispatch.co.uk/news/walsall-loan-man-james-baxendale-hails-perfect-debut-after-hitting-winner-for-mansfield-town-1-7665886?

“I want to keep scoring goals and to get Mansfield Town up the league table.

“I enjoyed it today and I just want to help Mansfield Town and to be able to get out on the pitch.

“It was a perfect debut on a personal level, We wanted to get those three points and climb the table.

“We put in a good display. The front four played well today and when you are playing with good players it makes things easier.

“League Two is what I expected it to be. It was furious in the first 15 minutes but we managed to get a foothold in the game and controlled it from there.”

Stags took the lead when Chris Clements curled a free-kick home from the edge of the box on 42 minutes.

It capped a good first half performance from Stags, which saw Clements and Westcarr go close.

Stevenage’s best chance of the half came when Michael Tonge hit the post with a 20 yards free-kick.

Tonge wasted a good chance to level when he headed wide on the hour mark.

Chris Day kept the visitors in it a minute later when he blocked a Craig Westcarr strike.

But there was nothing he could do when Baxendale fired a perfectly placed effort past him on 65 minutes.

Armand Gnanduillet hit a consolation goal for the visitors with the last kick of the game.

Practice makes perfect for Clements
mansfieldtown.net, 9th January 2016

Stags’ midfielder Chris Clements was delighted to score the opening goal during today’s 2-1 win over Stevenage and wants to add more to his tally as the season progresses.

Clements scored his second free-kick in as many games just minutes before half-time and James Baxendale doubled the Stags' advantage in the second half with a debut goal to secure the three points, despite Armand Gnanduillet’s late consolation goal.

The midfielder admitted that he has been practising his set pieces in training and is pleased to see that paying off in Sky Bet League Two matches.

“The last two [free-kicks], I’ve put them in a position where they’ve gone in the net and I’ve been practising them with Matthew Blair.

“[I spend] about half-an-hour after training, just trying to perfect a technique and obviously it’s paying off at the minute.”

Clements continued: “Last week’s was more of a consolation goal so I couldn’t really celebrate but today, obviously scoring the first goal I could celebrate in front of the fans.

“To say I’ve [scored] two in three seasons before this one, I’ve improved already and the fact that I’m on four at the minute, just past Christmas, I know double figures is a big aim but I’ve got to have that confidence to do that.”

The midfielder says he expected Stevenage to not let the Stags have time on the ball, but admitted that manager Adam Murray has focused training on his own players during the week, not the opposition.

“We knew they were going to be in our faces from the first whistle but we had to adjust to that and play our own game. All week we’ve not been worrying about them and just worked on how we were going to play. If we’re at it, there’s nobody who can cope with us.

“Today was a big game that we needed to win. I think it was a vital game to stick with with the ‘play-off’ pack and not lose touch.”

Stags appeared in a formation which allowed the attacking players to interchange with each other, and Clements had praise for loanee James Baxendale who proved to be an influential figure in the Stags’ side.

“We wanted to push our full-backs up like we did earlier in the season, let them be our width and let the three behind Greeny (Matt Green) just get on with it.

“I think Bax (James Baxendale) coming in today was a big part of the win because his movement behind Greeny was unbelievable at times.

“We’ve got players who can play in that role but to have a number 10 who can play ‘out and out’, you can get the ball to him and you know exactly what he’s going to do rather than having midfielders playing there or wingers playing there.”

Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham told BBC Three Counties Radio:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/35211815

"It was disappointing to go in a goal down when you are on the front foot and feeling good about the way things are going."
On Mansfield's penalty: "It was seen by everyone in the ground that it's hit his hand. From my view if you're giving it last week then that's a stone-wall penalty, without a doubt. We're not getting that rub of the green at the moment.
"Was it a free kick for their goal? I don't know. The man has skipped over a challenging leg, I don't know whether it's much of a free kick myself. It's given, and he puts it in the top corner."

Teddy Sheringham angry at referee David Webb after Stevenage are beaten at Mansfield Town
chad.co.uk, by Stephen Thirkill, Saturday 09 January 2016

Frustrated Stevenage boss Teddy Sheringham slammed referee David Webb after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Mansfield.

The former Manchester United star was left angry after his side had a first half penalty turned down and conceded from a free-kick he felt shouldn’t have been given.

“Was it even a free-kick for their opener? It looked like the lad took a tumble but who knows if it was a free-kick,” he said.

“Our wall has been pushed back to 12 yards and I am not sure why. It is very disappointing to have lost a game when we were playing well in the first half.

“They were dangerous on the break and the second was a sloppy goal to concede from our point of view. It left us with a mountain to climb, but we gave it a go.”

Goals from Chris Clements and debutant James Baxendale capped a fine win for Mansfield to end a run of four without a win.

Stevenage’s best chance of the half came when Michael Tonge hit the post with a curling effort from 20 yards.

Tom Pett and Teddy Sheringham slam 'blatant penalty' rejection
Hertfordshire Mercury, January 09, 2016, By Alan Scott

Boro midfielder Tom Pett felt his side should have been awarded a penalty which could have given them an early lead against a Mansfield Town side looking for their first league win since November.

Charlie Lee's effort appeared to be handled inside the box shortly after Michael Tonge hit a post with a free-kick, as Stevenage looked more dangerous in the first half of their 2-1 defeat today.

Pett said: "We were saying when you are at the bottom of the league you don't get the rub of the green.

"He's come up with his arms above his head. It's a blatant penalty. We are disappointed with that."

It was ironic that that the penalty snub came just a week after Boro conceded a spot-kick in similar fashion, with Fraser Franks handling inside the penalty area.

The Stags opened the scoring just minutes before the break with a fantastic free-kick from Chris Clements.

Pett felt Stevenage still had a chance until the second goal on 65 minutes from on-loan Walsall player James Baxendale, making his debut.

"I don't think there was much in the game at either end. We said at half-time don't go too gung ho next goal is big, them getting it killed our moment.

"There wasn't too much between us. At the end of the day it's both boxes that count.

"I don't think it was our worst performance of the season. We have to look at why we are losing games. Something has to change, we keep losing games and we are getting nearer and nearer the bottom."

Boro boss Teddy Sheringham was furious that his side were not given a penalty in the first half and questioned the free-kick award for Mansfield's opener.

He said: "It was seen by everyone in the ground that its hit his hand. From my view if you're giving it last week then that's a stone-wall penalty, without a doubt. We're not getting that rub of the green at the moment.

"Was it a free-kick for their goal? I don't know. The man has skipped over a challenging leg, I don't know whether it's much of a free-kick myself. It's given, and he puts it in the top corner.

"It was disappointing to go in a goal down when you are on the front foot and feeling good about the way things are going."

Stevenage FC NEWS AND REACTION: Boss facing 'tentative time' as he resolves player loan deals
Hertfordshire Mercury, January 09, 2016, By Alan Scott

Teddy Sheringham admits he faces a very busy week as he bids to resolve the loan situation for several Stevenage players, most of which ended yesterday (January 10).

Along with strikers Jamille Matt (from Fleetwood) and Armand Gnanduillet (from Chesterfield), other loans which have now ended are for left-back Connor Ogilvie (from Spurs), midfielder Lee Cox (from Plymouth), keepers Jesse Joronen (from Fulham) and Michael Crowe (from Ipswich), as well as winger Callum McFadzean (from Sheffield United).

Former Leeds midfielder Michael Tonge's three-month contract expires after Saturday's match at Plymouth Argyle.

"It's a very tentative time on that front. A lot needs to be sorted out this week. We will have to wait and see," said Sheringham.

"We're talking about a handful of players and that needs to be sorted out next week."

The Boro boss saw his side struggle with the Stags' direct balls in the 2-1 loss at the One Call Stadium on Saturday, but Sheringham will not sacrifice his principles.

"It's a tough game coming here to Mansfield, they are a decent team. It is frustrating we are not getting any clear cut chances. We are huffing and puffing," he said.

Read more: http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/Stevenage-FC-NEWS-REACTION-Boss-facing-tentative/story-28501598-detail/story.html#ixzz3x1fh63EO

"When you get these half chances you have to make more of them. We need to be better in the final third.

"We're not getting the rub of the green at the moment I think. A free-kick that hits the inside of the post and doesn't go in. You try and manoeuvre ways to get past their defence. With the pitches the way they are the long ball is going to cause us problems - that's Division Two football for you. It's just trying to find a solution all round.

"I felt we tried with a bit of gusto to get back in the game. They looked quite dangerous on the break when we were trying to push forward. The second goal was a sloppy goal and it put us on the back foot for the rest of the game."

Certainly the cameo performance of substitute Tom Conlon was one positive to emerge from a disappointing match.

Sheringham said: "I said to him that was very good. A lot of drive in that, a lot of tenacity he can pass the ball, it's the other side we need to see more of."

He added: "It was disappointing to go in a goal down when you are on the front foot.

"Was it a free-kick for their [first] goal? Their fella has skipped over a challenging leg. It's given and he's [Chris Clements] put it in the top corner.

"They [the Stevenage wall] were being pushed back 12 yards. Every other free-kick was being pushed back eight yards."

Sheringham was also angered by the denial of a penalty for Stevenage early on, when Charlie Lee's shot was handled in the box by a Mansfield player and very similar to the one Boro conceded last week when Fraser Franks was deemed to have handled the ball against Leyton Orient, from which the Londoners scored.

"I don't think it was anything like last week's penalty last week. Fraser's hands were down by his side and we get the penalty given against us," he said.

"This one is fully charged, it's up above his head, fully seen by everyone in the ground that it's hit his hand.

"From my point of view if you're giving it last week that's a stonewall penalty, without a doubt.

"It probably changes the whole vibe of the game and makes us feel a little bit more comfortable about what we're doing.

"We're creating chances, keeping the ball, doing good things out on the football pitch so it was very disappointing."

TEDDY ON MANSFIELD DEFEAT: "NOT GETTING THE RUB OF THE GREEN"
stevenagefc.com, 9th January 2016, by Dave Toyn

Reflecting on this afternoon's 2-1 defeat at Mansfield Town, Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham conceded it was perhaps the proverbial game of two halves as Boro impressed in the first half before the Stags enjoyed the best of the second half.

"We had the better of the first half so it was disappointing to go in a goal down when you are on the front foot and feeling good about the way things are going. We're creating chances, keeping the ball, doing good things out on the football pitch so it was very disappointing."

Michael Tonge struck the post as Boro impressed early on before the half's main talking point came when then visitors were denied what looked a clear penalty for handball, when Charlie Lee's volley was blocked inside the box.

Asked if it was a similar situation to last week's controversial penalty given against Fraser Franks, Teddy told us, "I don't think it was anything like last week's penalty. Last week Fraser's hands were down by his side and we get the penalty given against us. This one is fully charged, it's up above his head, fully seen by everyone else in the ground that it's hit his hand.

"From my point of view if you're giving it last week it's a stonewall penalty, without a doubt. It probably changes the whole vibe of the game and makes us feel a little more comfortable about what we're doing. We're not getting the rub of the green at the moment.

"We tried with a bit of gusto to get back into the game. They looked quite dangerous on the break and we tried to push forward. The second goal was sloppy from our point of view and put us in an uphill battle for the rest of the game."
