A Footballer’s Christmas
23 Dec 2015, by blairadams3

Christmas is a time for celebrating with family and friends, over indulging in food and drinking a pint or two. But for footballer’s, the Christmas period is a time for preparation and focus.

A good run over the influx of games during the festive period can ultimately shape your season. With two games in three days, six points can see you leapfrog a number of teams and send you into January full of confidence ready for the second half of the season.

That means there is no opportunity to over indulge in food and alcohol.

Playing two games so close together puts huge strain on your body. It is therefore imperative that footballer’s look after themselves over Christmas so that they are well prepared to perform at a high level for both games and come through unscathed.

It is not uncommon for managers to utilise their squad and make a number of changes as they look to freshen things up to give themselves the best chance to win.

I have experienced Christmas at two or three clubs now and each manager has had different ideas on how to prepare. Some managers have called us in to train on Christmas morning, whereas others have left us to enjoy the day with our families.

This year at Mansfield, we will train Christmas Eve to go through our game plan for Boxing Day and have Christmas Day off before travelling to Morecambe in the evening. This allows me to head back to South Shields and spend the day with my family before meeting up with my team mates at the hotel in the evening.

It is never ideal being away from family at Christmas, but the boxing day games always have a superb atmosphere and are special to play in. I can’t wait for it.

Merry Christmas!
