Manager Adam Murray hailed his players after they stood up and were counted in tonight’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers, which all but secures our safety in the Football League.

Reggie Lambe scored the all-important winning goal on the stroke of half-time, but the game was packed with incident - not least during 13 minutes of injury-time at the end, which saw the goalscorer sent-off, but the Stags defend resolutely to hold out.

“We knew what it was going to be like. We knew it was going to be a battle. I think the tension from both teams was ridiculous and it always was going to be like that in such a big game,” said Murray.

“I saw certain people become men tonight and I’m proud of them.

“I’ve pushed these boys, pushed them and pushed them, knocked them down and built them back up and pushed them again, and for periods when we had our back to the wall, it showed what a team-spirit we’ve built here.”

Speaking about the game in more detail, our boss continued: “After the first 15 minutes I thought we got a little bit edgy with the football. The back four were sitting too deep, which wouldn’t allow us to go and get up the park and we couldn’t go and press, so the momentum in the game swung a little bit.

“We spoke about that at half-time and we said that there was going to be a point in the game where they threw the kitchen sink at us. We knew before the game that they’d said they were going for it, which at any period of the game you know is going to throw you.

“So it was a difficult one, tactically, because you want to be an attacking threat, but you’ve got to be solid as well. We knew we’d have to be compact and keep our units nice and tight, and I think people saw at the end we had players on their last legs.”

He added: “I’m just over the moon for the boys. A lot of people don’t see what they go through behind-the-scenes. Some of those boys have hurt for the past few weeks and we wanted a win, a clean-sheet and three points and I might actually sleep tonight for the first time in four months.”

Mansfield boss Adam Murray admits to pre-match nerves
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32317530

Mansfield Town manager Adam Murray admitted he had to battle a bout of nerves before their crunch League Two match against Tranmere Rovers.
A 1-0 win left the Stags needing only two more points to guarantee safety.
"I felt sick and anxious, there was a little bit of worry and a little excitement," said 33-year-old Murray.
"It was the first game as a manager where something's really been riding on it and I haven't been able to go out there and carry the baton myself."
"I was sitting with my wife a couple of days ago and I said 'I wish I didn't care so much'. I don't want to let the club down," added Murray, who became player-boss in December following Paul Cox's departure.
"I have spoken to some managers over the last four months and they are in it for a job, but this isn't just a job.
"For me it's everything and that's the pressure I put on myself, so when you do get wins like this it is magnified by a million per cent."

Lambe scored his fifth of the season just before the break, but had to sweat on the result for a few moments after he was sent off in stoppage time following a skirmish involving players from both teams.
"Waiting for the final whistle in the dressing room and knowing we were under the cosh was very nerve-wracking for me, but the boys got through," he said.
"I was looking down the tunnel, but someone was there telling me to get back inside.
"Once I heard the final whistle I was ecstatic and relieved that the red card didn't cost the team."

Let’s finish the season on a high, says Stags boss Adam Murray

Adam Murray urged his Mansfield Town side to now finish the season on a high after all but securing their League status with a 1-0 win over relegation rivals Tranmere Rovers on a night of high emotion at the One Call Stadium.

Reggie Lambe had a sweet and sour night as he bagged the 44th minute winner against the run of play to push Stags eight points clear of the drop with three to play, only to see a second yellow card of the night in an amazing 14 added minutes by referee Darren Drysdale.

“I might just sleep tonight for the first time in four months,” said a clearly drained Murray.

“I have seen certain players become men tonight and I am proud of them.

“That was a massive three points and we knew it would a massive step. But the manager in me says we still have three to go and we want to finish the season on a winning run. Our performances have deserved it.

“They will need some recovery in the next few days as there are some absolutely shattered bodies in there.

“Knowing this league you can never count your chickens. But we’ve made it a tad easier for the run-in. Now the boys must work harder and express themselves.

“It was probably the worst game of football I’ve ever watched in my life.

“But we knew what it was going to be. We knew it would be scrappy and a battle in such a big game. But the tension from both sides tonight was ridiculous.”

He added: “I have asked questions of myself over the last few weeks, which you do. I have asked questions of the boys. I have pushed them, knocked them down, built them back up, then pushed them again.

“When our backs were against the wall tonight it showed what a great team spirit we’ve built here.

“If we’d scored the chance after 20 seconds it may have made it a bit easier.

“After the first 15 minutes we got a bit edgy with the football and the back four defended too deep which didn’t allow us to get up the pitch and press.

“It began to swing the game a bit. I said at half-time they’d throw the kitchen sink at us at some stage. Them playing four up front it is difficult to deal with tactically.

“I want to have an attacking threat but we needed to be solid and compact too. I am not comfortable without the extra midfielder.

“Although we were winning I still ripped their heads off at half-time. The goal was against the run of play if I am totally honest, though it was a great finish by Reg.

“I thought Reggie was superb, though I was disappointed with his sending-off. I hope the referee will look at it again as he got it totally wrong.

“I sent Reggie in there to clam things down, yet he’s pulled him out and shown him a second yellow card. He wasn’t trying to be aggressive and I am glad it didn’t cost us.

“The 14 added minutes was incredible. There was nothing we could do but see it out.”

Goal hero Lambe said: “I was just very happy to see my goal go in. The type of game it was, it was very important and the passion I felt once I scored I just couldn’t hold back.

“Tranmere needed a win, but we defended brilliantly. Credit to the boys. They kept a clean sheet and gave 110 per cent and did what they needed to.

“First and foremost we wanted to keep a clean sheet and go and attack them from there.

“For the sending-off I’d gone in to keep the peace but the referee must have thought I was stirring it up and gave me a second yellow. I hope he will go over it again and rescind it.

“The fans were brilliant tonight. All credit to them for cheering us on.

“It’s great to now have that points cushion. But we still have a job to do and we have to be professional and make sure we stay in this league.

“Now it’s on to Cambridge on Saturday which we are looking forward to, though I don’t know if I’ll be able to play.”

Rovers, who have always been in the League since being founder members, are now bottom with three games to go and boss Micky Adams said: “It’s the story of our season. We haven’t scored enough goals. We have dominated another game territorially but haven’t scored.

“It is just disappointing. We just can’t find a way through. It has been a recurring theme all season.

We haven’t showed enough quality in the final third.

“If the game was based on territory and possession we win it comfortably. Mansfield had just two shots.

“We tried to create opportunities, we got the ball wide and in good areas. But we didn’t test the goalkeeper despite trying enough combinations.

“There wasn’t a lack of effort, the players were well up for the game and knew the importance of it.

“It was a real kick in the teeth to go one nil down just before half-time.

“Although Mansfield started really brightly, we rode the storm and then came into it. We had a couple of chances that we didn’t put away. To go in behind was disappointing.”

He continued: “I’m not in the excuses game, it is not good enough. If you analyse everyone who has played up front this season, including people no longer at the club, it hasn’t been good enough. We haven’t scored enough goals.

“To win games you have to have goalscorers and we haven’t had that.

“We have to find ways of doing it. Our quality has to be spot on from set plays for the final three games. We have to go again on Saturday.

“The fans were terrific tonight and made a lot of noise. They made a terrific atmosphere.”

Lambe delighted to get match-winner

Winger speaks to the press after priceless midweek victory over Tranmere Rovers.

Winger Reggie Lambe was delighted to grab the goal which secured a priceless 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers, although the winger admits that he wasn’t following boss Adam Murray’s orders.

Lambe struck on the stroke of the interval following some good work by Vadaine Oliver, to secure a win which all but secures our safety in the Football League for another season.

“It was brilliant, right before half-time. I was just very happy to see it go in,” said Lambe, who was speaking in his post-match interview.

“The type of game it was, the passion I felt when I scored I couldn’t hold back. The gaffer wanted me to stay in shape, but I noticed that the ball was going to go up to Vadaine and it just fell to me and I just did the rest.”

Despite his goalscoring heroics, Lambe was annoyed to have been sent off deep into injury time: “It was good to score, but in the end to get a red card, it was a bit disappointing.

“I’ve gone in to try and keep the peace, but the referee has pulled me out. I don’t know if he thought I was trying to stir everything up, but he gave me a second yellow and I was sent-off.”

Despite his Man of the Match performance, the Bermudan insisted the whole team and the fans deserved credit for the performance and highlighted the gap they now have over the bottom two.

He added: “They (Tranmere) needed a win and we defended brilliantly, so credit to the boys for working hard, keeping a clean-sheet and doing what we needed to do.

“I don’t think anyone really felt nervous. I just think we knew the occasion and we knew they had to come out the blocks and come at us, so first and foremost we wanted to keep a clean-sheet.

“It’s brilliant to have that little cushion although we still have to do a job and we still have to be professional and make sure we stay in this league. We look forward to Cambridge.

"Unfortunately I may not be able to play, but I’ll be making sure the lads are keeping up the standards.”

Micky: "Not Enough Quality In The Final Third"
tranmererovers.co.uk

The Manager's post-match reaction
Micky Adams said a lack of quality in the final third cost his side again on Tuesday night at Mansfield.

Rovers fell to a 1-0 defeat at the One Call Stadium, with the Stags' Reggie Lamb scoring the only goal of the game shortly before half time.
The Manager told Tranmere Player: "It's the story of the season, we've not scored enough goals. We've dominated the game territorially and it's disappointing again.
"We just can't find a way through and it has been a recurring theme for us. There's not enough people taking responsibility in the final third and not enough quality in the final third. We've not tested the goalkeeper.
"I don't think there was any lack of effort, they were all up for the game and knew the importance of it. Mansfield started the game brightly, we rode the storm and came into it. We had a couple of chances that we didn't put away and then to go in 1-0 down was really disappointing.
"I'm not in the excuses game, it's not good enough. If you analyse everybody that has played up front this season, including people who are not here any more, they've not scored enough goals. To win games of football you've got to have players who score goals and take responsibility in the final third.
"But it's not over, we've got to go again on Saturday.
"We've got to be brave again. We need people who are going to stand up and be counted. We need to put out a side and a way of playing that suits the players.
"I keep getting kicked in the teeth and the team keeps getting kicked in the teeth. I'm sure I'll be right as rain for Saturday and they've got to be as well."

We must score goals or we'll go down, says Tranmere boss Micky Adams
liverpoolecho.co.uk

Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Adams insists his side will be relegated if they don’t find a solution to their inability to score goals after suffering defeat at Mansfield.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/must-score-goals-well-go-9045950?

Reggie Lambe’s strike just before half-time decided the contest to leave Rovers bottom of the Football League, two points from safety with three games remaining.

Yet again they couldn’t find the breakthrough despite dominating for large periods, three games without a goal and six without a win truly sees them staring life outside the Football League in the face. But Adams remains defiant that while his side’s unquestionable effort won’t save them, a little bit more quality in front of goal just might.

“It’s the story of our season. We haven’t scored enough goals. We have dominated another game territorially but haven’t scored,” he said.

“It is just disappointing. We just can’t find a way through. It has been a reoccurring theme all season. We haven’t showed enough quality in the final third.

“We tried to create opportunities; we got the ball wide and in good areas but we didn’t test the goalkeeper despite trying enough combinations.

“There wasn’t a lack of effort, the players were well up for the game and knew the importance of it. It was a real kick in the teeth to go 1-0 down just before half-time.

“Although Mansfield started really brightly, we rode the storm and then came into it. We had a couple of chances that we didn’t put away.

“I’m not in the excuses game, it is not good enough. If you analyse everyone who has played up front this season, including people no longer at the club, it hasn’t been good enough.”

Adams’ side must pick themselves up for the visit of Oxford United at the weekend, a side who really have nothing left to play for this season with both relegation and the play-offs out of the question.

And Adams believes perhaps set pieces will hold the key to delivering a vital three points.

“To win games you have to have goalscorers and we haven’t had that,” he added.

“We have to find ways of doing it. Our quality has to be spot on from set plays for the final three games and we have to go again on Saturday.”

Rovers drop to bottom of the Football League after defeat at Mansfield

TRANMERE dropped to the bottom of the Football League - two points adrift of safety with three games remaining - after losing 1-0 last night at Mansfield.

http://www.wirralglobe.co.uk/news/12890169._/?

A draw for fellow relegation battlers Hartlepool and a win for Cheltenham spelled serious trouble for Tranmere as they fight to retain their Football League status.

Vadaine Oliver almost gave the hosts the lead within 20 seconds but his shot was excellently saved by Rovers keeper Owain Fon Williams.

Oliver's through ball set up Reggie Lambe to give the home side the lead just before half-time.

Lambe was sent off deep in to stoppage time for his involvement in a bust-up between players of both sides.

Rovers manager Micky Adams said a lack of quality in the final third cost his side again.

Adams said: "It's the story of the season, we've not scored enough goals. We've dominated the game territorially and it's disappointing again.

"We just can't find a way through and it has been a recurring theme for us. There's not enough people taking responsibility in the final third and not enough quality in the final third. We've not tested the goalkeeper.

"I keep getting kicked in the teeth and the team keeps getting kicked in the teeth. I'm sure I'll be right as rain for Saturday and they've got to be as well."

Rovers are at home to Oxford Utd on Saturday.

The remaining fixtures see them facing Plymouth away on April 25 with the final game of the season against promotion chasers Bury at Prenton Park
