Murray has been chasing a versatile attacking player and is very hopeful a deal can be completed today.

He said: “We have a number one target and it’s good work from the staff here that we’ve managed to nail him down. I hope it will be done today

“I think he will excite people. He is somebody people know he is a good player. He gets assists, he’s quick, he scores goals and he works his socks off, so we are happy where we are at the minute.

“He is a multi-functional player who can play any one of four positions.

“If this one comes off we will take a step back, let things settle down and re-evaluate things towards the end of the window.”

Murray played all five of his other new signings in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Burton where, after a poor first half, the new-look side showed rich promise.

“I always knew that first 45 minutes on Saturday was not going to be up to scratch or speed as we had made so many changes and players were getting used to each other,” he said.

“There was a reason for doing it and there was a reason I wanted to get our business done in the first week of the window. I didn’t want that first 45 minutes happening at the end of January.

“We knew were going to have to ‘take one on the chin’ kind of thing. We had to get everyone into the regime and gelling as quickly as possible.

“Once things settle down, this is exciting me. We now have to get this squad and make it into a team and there will be a lot of exercises behind the scenes to bring the boys together.”

Stags take on Exeter City at home this Saturday with advance tickets costing just £7.
