CONCORD FA CUP POSTPONED / NEW DATE 18 NOV
13th November 2014 0:35

The Stags FA Cup against Concord Rangers at the One Call Stadium was called off at 1.40pm after heavy rain all morning left the pitch unplayable. The Stags players then had a tough training session (pic below). The game will now be played on Tuesday 18 November. The Stags wanted the game to be played this Tuesday but Concord were concerned that their players would not be able to get time off work at such short notice.

Cox: Postponement was the correct call

Boss speaks to media after Concord Rangers cup clash falls foul of the weather.

Manager Paul Cox felt it was the correct decision to postpone today’s scheduled FA Cup first round match against Concord Rangers.

Heavy rain across North Nottinghamshire throughout the morning, which got progressively worse after midday, left several areas of the One Call Stadium pitch under water.

Referee Kevin Wright held a formal pitch inspection at 1.30pm and with a poor forecast expected for the afternoon, he was left with no alternative but to postpone the match.

“The rain has been coming down for a while now,” said our boss. “I’m disappointed that it’s been called off, but the balls aren’t rolling. They’re just dropping in puddles of water.

“The referee has made the call and realistically, it’s the right call. The weather would have made a mockery of the game and it’d have been more like a game of water polo than a game of football.”

Cox continued: “I think [the referee] has been excellent in the way that he has dealt with it. He’s been professional.

“We’ve tried our hardest to get it on. ‘Mez’ [Michael Merriman, groundsman] has been out there with his equipment and a massive pat on the back needs to go to him, because he worked his socks off to try and get it on.

“But it’s one of those things. All you can say is that everyone has been professional. The referee has made the call and looking at the pitch, it’s the right call.”

A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox sees silver lining in FA Cup postponement
By Sarah Clapson, Nottingham Post, November 10, 2014

PAUL Cox acknowledged the irony - no sooner had he signed a player called Waterfall, then the weather did just that.

But though the Mansfield Town boss was disappointed to see his side's FA Cup clash against Concord Rangers postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, there was a silver lining.

With the first round tie at the One Call Stadium rearranged for Tuesday, November 18, Stags have this week to continue the rehabilitation of some of their injured players.

Cox will hope to then see the benefits at the weekend, when Mansfield visit Shrewsbury Town in league action.

New signing, the aforementioned Luke Waterfall, was in line for his debut on Saturday, 24 hours after joining on loan from Scunthorpe United. And striker Matt Rhead was set to return from a hamstring tear.

Ollie Palmer and Chris Clements have both been easing their way back in recent weeks and they could be joined by defender Ryan Tafazolli and midfielder Simon Heslop against the Shrews.

It is also understood Jamie Sendles-White is set to extend his loan spell from QPR today, all of which provides a welcome boost to squad numbers.

"Rheady was going to be back, Ollie Palmer was definitely back, Clemence was back and we signed Luke Waterfall," Cox said of the postponed game. "I think he will get some headlines because of his second name!

"We're building strongly, and that's all I've asked for - to get important bodies back.

"There might be Tafazolli for next week and there might be Heslop for next week.

"Slowly, slowly, we're getting numbers back and that's important because I would love to see my bench full. And maybe one or two sat in the stand who have still got that bit of quality.

"That's when I think we can really judge ourselves on the cup games, but more importantly, on the league games.

"Sometimes it's a blessing in disguise when you get a free weekend, sometimes it's not.

"It gives us another couple of days to get one or two injuries back.

"I was joking with the referee that this was the first time we had one or two injuries back and the game gets called off!

"I wish it had happened two weeks ago, it would have been better for us!"

Referee Kevin Wright made the decision to postpone Saturday's game following a 1.30pm pitch inspection.

Heavy rain throughout the morning had left the ground sodden and unplayable, with the call being made just as Concord's coach pulled up.

Cox though, believes the decision was the correct one.

"As quickly as possible you want the referee to say, 'yes, it's going to be played' or 'no, it's going to be called off'," he said.

"I kept going in the dressing room and the lads were hanging around; you could tell in their eyes, they just wanted to know.

"The psychology building up to a normal game is incredible, but building up to an FA Cup tie is a little bit different.

"The boys were excited, and were disappointed when it was called off.

"It was the right call. The referee made the right decision.

"He was at the ground from six in the morning. We put him on alert and he monitored it every hour.

"It's not like he just came in and thrown the ball up to see if it bounced, he'd been here for a few hours and monitored it over a number of hours.

"It would make an absolute mockery of the game if it was to be played.

"We've got to be patient now and go again."

Mansfield took the opportunity to train instead on Saturday, and Cox hopes they can now focus their minds on looking to end a run of seven games without a win.

"We gave them a good blow-out, then we gave them the rest of the weekend off," said the manager.

"Hopefully they'll come in refreshed today.

"They worked hard last week and there was a response in training (to their 2-1 defeat to Southend United). Hopefully we can carry that on."

Concord chairman unhappy with late call off

Essex sport by James Colasanti

CONCORD chairman Antony Smith felt a decision to postpone today’s FA Cup tie at Mansfield Town should have been taken this morning - before the club’s supporters made the three-hour journey up north.
Two coach loads of fans made their way from Essex up the M1, only to discover the day’s constant rainfall had forced a seemingly inevitable abandonment of the first round tie at a water-logged Field Mill shortly before 1.30pm.
Smith said: “It’s obviously disappointing.
“The referee did notify us at 8am this morning that it was definitely in danger and I’d looked at the forecast and saw there was an 80 per cent chance of rain late morning and pretty much all afternoon.
“So I think he should have made the decision this morning and not after 1pm - after we have traveled all the way up here.
“So it’s very disappointing and the only positive I can take out of it is that we have now made history and we will be in the second round draw.”
Smith said discussions are taking place about when the rescheduled match will take place, but that it is likely to be this Tuesday or Tuesday week.
He said that decision would be largely dictated by when many of Concord’s players can get time off of their day jobs to be available for a midweek game in the north of the country.
