Chesterfield: Spireites target Stags striker
derbyshiretimes.co.uk, 22/08/2014

Spireites are believed to be in the running to sign Mansfield Town striker or attacking midfielder Sam Clucas.

Chief Executive Chris Turner has confirmed enquiries have been made about the 23 year old former Lincoln City and Hereford United man who had a spell at the Glenn Hoddle academy in Spain.

Clucas scored 13 goals for the Stags last season, all before March, including a run of five in six early on in the campaign and he also bagged four in an 8-1 away win in the FA Cup at St Albans.

Paul Cook is a long-time admirer of the player and enquired about him a year ago before he signed for the Stags. The manager is also in talks with midfielder Jimmy Ryan and keeper Tommy Lee about extended deals.

Ian Evatt’s contract has an automatic extender in it subject to games played and Cook is confident that will click in before Christmas.

It’s believed a couple of Spireites’ key players are battling to be fit for tomorrow’s trip to 100% Fleetwood Town though Dan Gardner is set to be considered for a start after his sub appearance in Tuesday’s home loss against MK Dons.

The possibility of being without a couple of first teamers will no doubt see Cook trying to bring in at least one new face before the trip to the North West, with Clucas in pole position. Fleetwood, 2-0 winners at Scunthorpe United in midweek, have seen summer signing from Crawley Town, Jamie Proctor score in each of the Cod Army’s three league wins.

Chesterfield’s JPT First Round match is at Scunthorpe’s Glandford Park on Tuesday, September 2 (7.45pm).

Clucas Among Many Enquired About
chesterfield-fc.co.uk, Fri 22 Aug 2014

Manager Paul Cook admits that Mansfield Town's Sam Clucas is one of many players he has enquired about.

Cook revealed in his pre-match press conference at Friday lunch-time that he had spoken to his Mansfield counterpart Paul Cox about Clucas, but insisted that no offer had been made.

He said: "We've made an enquiry about Sam Clucas - who is a very exciting young player - and those conversations are continuing, but we've also enquired about many other players.

"There are a lot of phone calls between managers on a weekly basis. To say we've had a bid turned down is not true."
