We are delighted to announce our first summer signing - centre-back Luke Jones.

The 27-year-old joins us on a free transfer, having chosen to leave Stevenage at the end of last season.

Jones will be fondly remembered by our supporters for the crucial role that he played during our Conference Premier title-winning campaign in 2012/13.

The centre-back contributed eight goals from 32 appearances that season, including winning goals against Woking and Tamworth in the latter stages of the campaign.

This will be his third spell at One Call Stadium, following a previous stint with us in the 2009/10 season.

Shortly after putting pen-to-paper on a contract with us, Jones said: "I'm buzzing really and it’s brilliant to be back.

"I've got such fond memories of the place, especially the year that we won the championship, so I’m delighted to be back and raring to go."

Meanwhile, boss Paul Cox added: "I was surprised to be able to capture him, but it’s a quality signing to the spine of our side. It’s a really positive signing for us."

Jones: I’m buzzing to be back

New signing Luke Jones admits he is buzzing to be back at Mansfield Town.

The centre-back, who is known for his aerial dominance in both penalty boxes, was unveiled as our first summer signing after he penned a deal with the club earlier today.

Jones re-joins us having opted to leave Stevenage - a club for whom he made 33 appearances during the 2013/14 campaign.

“I’m buzzing and it’s brilliant to be back,” said Jones.

“I’ve got such fond memories of the place - especially in the year when we won the championship, so I’m delighted to be back and raring to go.”

Jones played a crucial part in our title-winning Conference Premier campaign in 2012/13, chipping in with some vital goals at vital times, whilst cementing his position at centre-half with some excellent defensive displays.

The 27-year-old, who netted eight goals from 32 league appearances, still finds it difficult to put into words our achievements during that season.

He continued: “It was unbelievable. Obviously we had ups and downs throughout the season, but we really did come strong after Christmas-time and put the run together that everyone remembers.

“It was just unbelievable and you can’t put it into words really - the last two games, Hereford, where it was on a knife-edge, and Wrexham, the atmosphere was unbelievable.

“It went from being loud with the fans behind us to where you could hear a pin-drop in the stadium. It was really that tense at the end of the season.

“These are memories that, as a player, will stay with you forever. They’re fond memories in my mind and a big reason why I want to come back here.”

Jones also shared his memories of that intense night of captivating drama at Edgar Street, when Matt Green’s last-gasp strike propelled us to the top of the table with just one match remaining.

“I’d say [it was one of the best days of my life]. Towards the end of that game it looked as though we just really weren’t going to find a way through.

“It was on a knife-edge and had we not got the result we needed in that game, I really think we’d have struggled, but that man ‘Greenie’ [Matt Green] popped up as he did a lot that season.

“The celebrations at the end of it were absolutely madness. The fans were on the pitch and it was just such a jubilant thing. We hadn’t won the league yet, so it was crazy, but it was like we knew that fate was taking its place.

“We knew that winning that game set us up for a big, big game and coming back home to win the championship.”

The 27-year-old joins on a free transfer, having chosen to leave Stevenage at the end of last season and having even paid up part of his own contract to be able to make his return to Mansfield.

Jones will be fondly remembered by Stags’ supporters for the crucial role that he played during last year’s Conference championship season.

The centre-back contributed eight goals from 32 appearances that season, including winning goals against Woking and Tamworth in the latter stages of the campaign.

This will be his third spell with the club following a previous stint in the 2009/10 season.

Jones told the club’s website http://www.mansfieldtown.net: “I’m buzzing really and it’s brilliant to be back.

“I’ve got such fond memories of the place - especially the year that we won the championship, so I’m delighted to be back and raring to go.”

Meanwhile, manager Paul Cox added: “I was surprised to be able to capture him, but it’s a quality signing to the spine of our side.

“I didn’t really see this coming. He played about 30 times in League One last season. But I have a good relationship with him and have kept in touch.

“Stevenage wanted to keep him and Luke has had to pay a chunk of his own money to end his contract which shows his desire to come here and he needs to be applauded for that.”

LUKE Jones is set to return to Stevenage next season - after completing a deal to re-join fellow League Two side Mansfield Town.
The 27-year-old former Shrewsbury Town centre-half was signed by Boro boss Graham Westley last summer, following the departure of then skipper Mark Roberts.
Shortly after putting pen-to-paper on a contract with Mansfield, Jones told the club website this afternoon (May 27): “I’m buzzing really and it’s brilliant to be back.
“I’ve got such fond memories of the place - especially the year that we won the championship, so I’m delighted to be back and raring to go.”
Meanwhile, Stags boss Paul Cox added: “I was surprised to be able to capture him, but it’s a quality signing to the spine of our side. It’s a really positive signing for us.”
He played the opening game of the season against Oldham but then spent some time on the sidelines.
He returned to the starting line-up in early October and held down a regular place, impressing with a series of strong displays.
He was also a threat in attack at set-plays with his towering presence.
However, he was frozen out again after the arrival of former France U-21 defender Bira Dembele in February.
Jones made 26 appearances in total for Stevenage, playing his final game in the last game of the season, a 2-0 loss at promoted Brentford.
Jones was released by Westley in a mass culling of players a fortnight ago, as the Boro boss revamped his squad as he prepares for life in League Two next season.
He started his career at Blackburn Rovers, but has had two previous spells at Mansfield, in 2009-10 and 2012-13, leaving them to join Stevenage after scoring eight goals in 32 appearances in the last season, a superb tally for a centre-half.
He has also previously played for Cercle Brugge in Belgium, Kidderminster Harriers, Forest Green Rovers and Ashton United.
