Boss Paul Cox has urged his side to raise their standards following tonight’s 3-2 friendly defeat against League One outfit Coventry City.

Despite putting in an impressive attacking performance against higher league opposition, our manager was left feeling disappointed.

Cox said: “I want our players hungry to succeed and progress. If they want to admire their championship medal from last season then I’m not hanging around for them.

“People might think that’s harsh but I want to raise the bar with our football club. I think we looked fluent going forward but conceded some sloppy goals at the back.

“We conceded two penalties and an own goal which isn’t a good sign heading into the start of a new season.

“It was an entertaining game for the supporters but it’s not what we are about, and it definitely needs improving.

“I’m concerned that we conceded some sloppy goals. I don’t want to take away anything from Coventry - they are a good League One club and a big club, but we want to raise the bar against any team we face.”

Meanwhile, the hunt for a new striker continues as Cox looks to find a suitable replacement for Matt Green, who joined Birmingham City earlier this month.

The club held unsuccessful talks with a different League One striker last week, but the search looks to commence elsewhere as we look to bolster our attacking force.

"One or two clubs have come into the equation now in League One and the feelings are from his representatives that he wants to stay at the highest level possible. We may have to move on from that one," explained Cox.

“I’ll be speaking to another striker tonight and tomorrow.

"I could sign a striker tonight but I want to make sure they are right for this football club. We don’t want to rush into these things as we want someone that can score, has desire and would like to progress with us.

“We need to way up the numbers. At the moment we’re constantly creating chances and if we can put them away we will be a handful for teams."
