Paul Cox is preparing for life in League Two less than a week after leading his team to the Blue Square Bet Premier title.

Whilst the manager draws out his plans for next season, his players’ achievements have been rewarded with a short holiday in Tenerife, paid for by Chairman John Radford.

Then, after Sunday’s open-top bus parade across the streets of Mansfield, Cox will open discussions with three out-of-contract players Louis Briscoe, Luke Jones and Matt Green.

The squad will be strengthened in the close season, Cox has admitted, and while there will also be players leaving, the nucleus of the squad will be kept.

“We have a lot of players who have played in League Two or above. I don’t want to make massive changes. It’s a step up and a league which we’ll go into with our eyes clearly wide open,” said Cox.

“We know we’re going to have to improve in some areas, and there will be casualties. I have to be professional and do what is best for this football club and some tough decisions will have to be made.

“The majority of the squad are tied down with options and we have some decisions to make on players.

“We’ve made massive strides in 18 months, and we’re probably a year ahead of schedule. We need to reach for the stars, and keep heading in the right direction. As long as we’re progressing, we’ll be happy.

“I don’t want us to stand still. Just because we have achieved something, it’s chip paper now. We need to show the same hunger and desire which we showed last season.”
