Mansfield then hit two goals in the space of four frantic minutes courtesy of Nick Wright and Jake Speight respectively, though Rhys Harbottle's strike, sandwiched between the two, gave Hartlepool the win. The Stags began in determined fashion against their youthful opponents and Jake Speight drew a fine save from Hartlepool shot-stopper Mark Foden with an early low-drive from the edge of the area. Matt Rhead then headed wide after Liam Marsden caused pandemonium with a looping long-throw into the six-yard box, before George Pilkington saw an effort blocked by Darren Holen. James Poole fired straight at Alan Marriott as Hartlepool created their first opening on 20 minutes, although Luke James lacked accuracy with a 25-yard attempt moments later. The visitors began to dominate proceedings as the first period progressed and came within inches of an opener when Wyke's close-range attempt was superbly blocked on the line by Marsden. Nevertheless, the hosts failed to heed the earlier warning and fell behind on the half-hour mark, as the dangerous Wyke slotted home after Baldwin crossed from the left. Luckless Mansfield then created a series of good chances, but were unable to find an equaliser before the break. Nick Wright tested Foden's reflexes with a thunderous 20-yard drive, whilst Speight registered two attempts on target, the latter of which was headed off the line by Nathan Buddle. The Stags almost drew level seven minutes after the re-start when Matt Rhead's nonchalant back-heel flick towards goal was cleared by Josh Rowbotham at the back-post. Greg Rutherford's long-range strike was then tipped over by Marriott, but the veteran shot-stopper was unable to prevent Walker from doubling the lead with a low 18-yard drive on the hour mark. The Pools could have added a third goal soon afterwards, when Wyke rounded 'keeper Marriott, but saw his powerful shot bravely blocked on the line by Marsden. Despite enjoying plenty of possession, Mansfield offered little in the way of a response until Paul Johnson untidily collided with Wright inside the area with 15 minutes remaining. Wright powerfully fired beyond the desperate Foden from the resulting spot-kick, to reduce arrears to give his side hope ahead of what proved to be a frantic few minutes. Nevertheless, hopes of a Stags comeback looked to have evaporated for good less than 60 seconds later, as Hartlepool substitute Harbottle capitalised on some static defending to extend the visitors lead once more. But when Foden bizarrely fumbled Junior Daniel's right-wing delivery straight into the path of Speight two minutes later, the Mansfield striker tapped home to once again give the hosts hope. However, despite two attempts from Speight and a powerful drive from substitute Ben Clark in the dying exchanges, the visitors remained resilient in order to claim victory --------------------- Reserves Earn Cup Win Over Mansfield Posted: Tue 04 Dec 2012 http://www.hartlepoolunited.co.uk//news/article/041212-reserves-report-525679.aspx Luke James played 45 minutes as Pools Reserves ran out 3-2 winners at Mansfield Town on Tuesday afternoon.The youngster was in the line-up after more than a month out following a double hernia operation and completed the first half at The One Call Stadium without any problems. It was an open League Cup game in which both sides created plenty of chances, though it was Pools who got on to the front foot early on with the dangerous James Poole firing off two good efforts - one saved by the keeper and one just over the bar. Charlie Wyke then got through on goal and brought another good save from the home side's keeper before Poole back-heeled the rebound towards goal only to see it cleared off the line. Pools opened the scoring when a lovely passing move freed Darren Holden on the left and his cross was powerfully met by the onrushing Jack Baldwin who made it 1-0. Mark Foden made two smart saves to protect Pools' lead before James curled an effort just over the bar as the game continued to produce chances. Pools survived a scare early in the second half when Josh Rowbotham was forced to clear from the line, before Greg Rutherford had a powerful shot pushed over the bar. Micky Barron's men increased their advantage when Brad Walker's shot hit the post and rebounded in to the net off the back of the unlucky Stage keeper. Wyke had a shot cleared off the line before Mansfield pulled one back from the penalty spot after Paul Johnson had been adjudged to have fouled his man. However, Pools quickly restored the two-goal lead when Poole showed brilliant skill to find space and unleash a great shot which hit the post and fell loose to substitutes Rhys Harbottle to score. Town gave themselves a chance of a comeback late on when they pulled another goal back but it was too little too late and Pools held on for the win. "It was a pleasing performance - we moved the ball well and got in to some great positions," Barron told us afterwards. "It was great to see Luke James back and he was bright on the ball - he didn't really want to come off at half time but giving him forty-five minutes was always the plan so early in his comeback. "James Poole was absolutely outstanding and got in to some really dangerous positions, as well as linking well with Jack Baldwin who did well in midfield."
