PAUL Cox says a trio of key players will get among the action for Mansfield Town this week after not being risked at the weekend.

New signing Jake Speight, striker Ross Dyer and John Thompson – who missed most of last season because of injury – were all left out of the 1-0 pre-season friendly win at Leamington FC.

But the Stags boss said it was nothing serious, more precautionary after two weeks of intense training.

And while midfielders Adam Murray and Anthony Howell are out for a few more weeks, after summer operations on ankle and knee respectively, the other trio will play this week.

Cox hopes to give them and the rest of his squad, which includes 11 new signings, plenty of game time in the next four days.

The Stags travel to Hednesford tonight, Shepshed Dynamo on Thursday and then Gainsborough on Friday.

And, after playing two different groups of 11 players in either half of the opening friendly, Cox said: "Speighty, Thompson and Dyer should be available and we will get them involved. And we will look at it and see who is ready after the weekend.

"We have three games this week and we want to build the lads up to playing 60 minutes each and we want to utilise these three games properly.

"It is a great chance to give them all some game time.

"There is many a test we are going to face in these next four or five games and pre-season for me is seeing where our strengths and weaknesses are and at the minute, we have quite a few weaknesses.

"But those will get stronger as we get fitter and play more together but it will also show up where we have to strengthen further."
