INJURED Stags defender Rhys Day says he has a whole new perspective on life following the imminent arrival of his first son as he battles back from long-term injury.

Day is expected to be out for anything between nine and 12 months after he suffered a torn patella tendon in a friendly game at Rainworth at the back end of January.

It was the latest injury setback for the popular Welshman, who has now had 13 operations during his football career.

But for Day, who has made 116 starts during his spell at Field Mill, the current injury has taken more of a back step than previous ones as he prepares to become a father for the first time.

“I'm getting there slowly but surely, but it is going to be a long and frustrating road,” said Day.

“It is 12 months since I have played a first time game. The doctors have set me my target and I am doing everything I am supposed to do. I will be happy if I can get back to fitness ahead of schedule.

“But my first son will be born in the next two weeks and that changes things for me. Before football was my life but now I have a different perspective on things.

“Becoming a dad changes things. It is going to be very nice and it will be great when I can go to the park and kick a ball about with him.”

Day has not pulled on a Mansfield Town shirt in a competitive game since the back end of the 2010/11 campaign
