Stags beat the freeze at Sutton
chad.co.uk, Tuesday 14 February 2012

MANSFIELD Town beat the big freeze to get some much-needed action in on Saturday when they beat Sutton Coldfield 2-0 in a behind-closed-door friendly on the Royals' artificial 3G Coles Lane pitch.

Manager Paul Cox sent out two different line-ups for each half with one or two unnamed trialists having a run out.

And he will have been delighted to see new striker Matt Rhead curling home a goal after just two minutes from Matt Green's lay-off, Lee Stevenson bundling in the decisive second after a goalkeeping error on 77 minutes.

“The lads worked hard and got something out of it,” he said. “It was good to see Rheady score again. That's three in two behind-closed-doors games and he linked really well with Matt Green for the goal which was a real positive.”

Ritchie Sutton and Lindon Meikle needed treatment for facial injuries but both will be in the squad on Saturday.

“Ritchie needed some strips on a nick on his forehead while Lindon took a bit of a boot to the nose,” added Cox. “Sometimes you pick up more injuries in these kind of games when players take their foot off the pedal a little instead of going at it full-blooded.”
