John Thompson missed the York game at Field Mill and is going for a scan on his neck/shoulder in what is feared to be a secondary injury from his assault at Ilkeston.

JOHN Thompson's latest fitness scare is a 'real worry', admits Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox.

The central defender has only started six games and appeared as a substitute once this season after being the club's most high-profile signing of the summer.

First, the former Notts County man was seriously injured in an incident with Ilkeston forward Gary Ricketts in a pre-season friendly which required extensive surgery to his face.

He made a comeback at AFC Telford United in November, but is now out again after suffering a complaint that is affecting his neck, shoulder and arm.

Thompson is to undergo a scan, set for next week, to assess the precise nature of his injury.

"The first priority is to get to the bottom of what is wrong. He is having problems throwing a ball and the pain is spreading down from his neck to his arm," said Cox.

"It might be a secondary injury to what he had in pre-season, but it is a bit worrying.

"It is so unfortunate for him. You have to say he has some horrendous bad luck.

"It's hard to say how long he is going to be out for. If the scan comes back OK and he gets the all-clear then he will be straight back into training.

"But if it is something more serious then we are just going to have to be patient."
