Tom Naylor has today joined Derby County on loan for six weeks with a view to a permanent move in January.

The 20-year-old defender has been subject to much transfer speculation recently and has finally made the move to Pride Park this afternoon.

Naylor, a product of our highly regarded youth system, played over 20 times for our first team, scoring one goal.

Manager Paul Cox told http://www.mansfieldtown.net: "We are really chuffed for Tom. He has been a dream to work with and is an honest boy.

"It's part and parcel of football for bigger clubs to come after the hot prospects at smaller clubs, and this deal has been good for both parties.

"We'll be following Tom's career with great interest and wish him all the very best for the future."

Speaking to mansfieldtown.net, Tom said: "I'd like to thank everyone at the club who has helped me progress through the ranks - I will always be grateful.

"This is a big opportunity for me and I'm really looking forward to this fresh challenge.

"I will always look out for Mansfield's results in the future and hope the club can get the success it deserves."

Naylor aims for Premier League after leaving Stags for Rams
Nottingham Post, Wednesday, November 16, 2011

TOM Naylor will forever be thankful for the part Mansfield Town have played in his football development – but believes he can now play in the Premier League at Derby County.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/story-13860987-detail/story.html

The central defender has initially moved to the Championship club on loan but will sign a three-and-a-half year deal in the January transfer window.

It is understood Naylor will command a fee of £100,000, with the Stags also securing a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

The deal concludes a long-running chase for the 20-year-old, who made 23 appearances at Field Mill.

The former youth team product has been on trial at the Rams, Fulham and Burnley this season, while Bournemouth had a bid rejected and Charlton and Leeds were also interested.

"It's a relief to finally get things sorted. I wondered if it was ever going to happen when it went quiet," said Naylor.

"It is the perfect move for me because they are a massive club and it is local.

"I really enjoyed working with Nigel Clough when I went on trial and look forward to working with him again. I think I could have a chance to play in the Premier League at Derby – and that's the aim.

"I'm a Mansfield fan, so it's obviously sad to leave. I will always appreciate them giving me a chance or I wouldn't be in this position now."

Boss Paul Cox is disappointed Naylor is not staying until January but said: "Derby wanted him now and when someone is moving up, you don't stand in their way."

Meanwhile, Mansfield target Exodus Geohaghon is set to join Dagenham and Redbridge from Darlington

Naylor following in footsteps of former Stag Buxton
Nottingham Post, Saturday, November 19, 2011

FIRST it was Jake Buxton and now Tom Naylor.

Ashfield School pupils-turned-Mansfield Town players certainly seem to have what it takes to attract the attention of Derby County.

It was back in the summer of 2009 that Buxton, having helped Burton Albion into the Football League after leaving Field Mill for the Brewers, followed Nigel Clough to Pride Park.

Now it is Naylor's turn to join the Rams, this time straight from the Stags, having agreed a three-and-a-half year deal that will start in January following an initial loan spell.

If Buxton's move to the second tier of English football came as a surprise, then Naylor's has not.

Ever since bursting on to the scene at the end of the 2009-10 season, when David Holdsworth handed him his debut in a 2-0 win over Altrincham as an 17-year-old, Naylor has been destined for bigger and better things.

When interest in the defender's services intensified in the summer, it came as no surprise to Mansfield fans.

At that point it became a question of when, not if, Naylor would move on.

Leeds and Charlton were apparently sniffing around; Bournemouth bid a five-figure fee but were swiftly rebuffed. Derby, Fulham and Burnley all took Naylor on trial, fully aware of the player's obvious promise.

But it was the Rams who won the race – ending a long period of limbo for Naylor.

"Of course it's been frustrating because I have been waiting for this chance for a while," he said. "I had a few trials and thought something was going to happen but then nothing did. At that point I just got my head down and got on with it.

"But finally I have got the move to Derby, which is where I really wanted to go, and I'm delighted.

"I've already had my first training session and everything went perfectly.

"Family and friends are important to me so it's great that I will still have them around.

"I will probably stay living up here for a start and then move to Derby in a few months' time.

"I know Bucko from Mansfield. When he was in the first team, I was in the youth team.

"I didn't speak to him before I made the move, but I have since and he said the move will be great for me."

Naylor already holds new boss and former Forest player Clough in the utmost respect for the way he has gone about things at Pride Park.

Naylor said: "He was a massive reason for me wanting to sign for Derby. Nigel is someone you really want to work for. I've seen how he works with the players in training. He can only improve me as a player."

Naylor does not expect it to be easy to continue his so-far meteoric rise. He knows he will have to fight hard for a first-team place.

"I know I'm not going to get straight into the team but I'm confident I can work my way through," said Naylor.

"I will have to show what I am about first and work my way in. But I feel when I get a chance I can take it."

Praised for his ability to keep his feet on the ground, Naylor's talk of his long- term dreams are exactly that – goals for the future.

He said: "I think Derby can definitely get in the Premier League and I would love to play for them there.

"I would also love to play for my country one day if I can. That would be amazing.

"I've quite a lot of long-term aims, but right now I'm only looking at the present."

Cox stays out of Naylor Derby departure row
chad.co.uk, Thursday 17 November 2011

STAGS boss Paul Cox was today staying well out of the war of words sparked by Tom Naylor's sudden departure to Derby County.

http://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-fc/cox_stays_out_of_naylor_derby_departure_row_1_3979603

Mansfield had agreed a deal that would see Naylor join the Rams full-time in January. But, out of the blue, Naylor left early this week to join Derby on loan, sparking an angry outburst from Mansfield Town director Steve Hymas on fans forum web site Stagsnet, levelling various accusations at Naylor over the manner of his sudden departure.

They included allegeding Naylor had refusing to play another game for Mansfield and also that he feigned injury to avoid becoming cup-tied.

However, manager Paul Cox today stayed out of the furore, saying: “Tom Naylor's move has been a long drawn-out affair if I'm honest so I am quite glad it's done and dusted.

“We know where we are heading and Tom knows where he is heading and we wish him all the best.

“I don't want to get involved in mud-slinging. I never read message boards and for me to comment would be a bit inappropriate.

“I have no power over what people's opinions are and what they write on forums. Sometimes if you comment it can stir up a whirlwind. I am sure there are people on there that like me and others that don't. I can't change peoples opinions.”

Hymas today told Chad he was standing by his comments.

On the controversial forum posting, he had written: “Good luck to Tom, but there is a right way and a wrong way to leave a club.

“Tom said he would never pull on a Mansfield shirt again if we didn't release him immediately.

“We gave him his first chance in professional football and he proclaimed to be a Stags fan. Refusing to play again is not the way it's done.

“I fought hard and long with ex-managers to get him a game and this is the way we are repaid.

“I don't care too much for Derby as they have been tapping him up for months through another 'Stags legend', Ivan Hollet.

“His head was turned and he even feigned injury against Fleetwood so he wouldn't be cup tied. Look where that left us.

“I don't really care if he is a success at Derby or not. I only care that Mansfield get promoted and he didn't want to hang around and fight for the cause.

“ (He was) always injured over the last few months but, funnily enough, never too injured to go out on trial. I have lost a lot of respect for the boy over recent weeks.

“Don't tread on everyone on the way up and you can always return on your way back down, is my motto. I'm glad he has gone now and we can move on.”

Hymas added today: “You don't bite the hand that feeds.”

Naylor declined to make a comment on the accusations

Naylor's departure earlier this week has prompted a stinging rebuke from director Steve Hymas on a fans' forum, criticising the youngster's conduct during the transfer.

Cox said: "I have no power over other people's opinions and what is written on forums.

"It's inappropriate for me to comment. It can sometimes start up a whirlwind."

Rams Sign Naylor On Loan
dcfc.co.uk, Tue 15 Nov 2011

Derby County have signed promising young defender Tom Naylor on loan from Mansfield Town until January, with a view to the move becoming permanent in the New Year.

http://www.dcfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10270~2516549,00.html

The 20-year-old central defender impressed during a recent trial with the Rams and has attracted interest from clubs as high as the Premier League in the last few months.

Naylor appeared for Derby's reserves back in September in their 6-1 Central League Central Division win over Walsall and manager Nigel Clough has followed his progress closely ever since.

Clough said: "Tom is a young player who we feel can develop and improve into a Championship player.

"He is one for the future with a lot of potential and we hope he can fulfil it in a Derby County shirt.

"Tom has been on trial at a couple of clubs in the last few weeks and been linked with various moves so I am sure he is looking forward to settling down here and proving his worth.

"He's got a few weeks to see how he settles and progresses here and if all goes well then we will look to go down the avenue of making the move permanent in January."

Naylor is a graduate of Mansfield's youth system and made his first-team debut for the Stags by playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 Blue Square Premier home win over Altrincham in April 2009.

He spent the 2009/10 season on loan at Belper Town, where he received rave reviews, and after a short stint on loan at Alfreton Town he returned to appear 17 times for the Stags last season in the Blue Square Premier as well as being part of the Mansfield side that reached the FA Trophy Final.

Naylor has turned out for the Stags five times this season with his last appearance coming on 15th October against Southport at Field Mill

Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield also rejected a bid from League One team Bournemouth.

Clough added: "He has a lot of potential and we hope he can fulfil it in a Derby County shirt.

"Tom has been on trial at a couple of clubs in the last few weeks and been linked with various moves so I am sure he is looking forward to settling down here and proving his worth.
