Gaffer upbeat despite injury set backs
mansfieldtown.net, Mon 08 Nov 2010

David Holdsworth will take his heavily depleted side to Kettering tomorrow night without the services of five first team regulars.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10325~2212692,00.html

The team news makes grim reading with Gary Silk, Kyle Nix and Peter Vincenti all set to miss out on the clash at Rockingham Road after being substituted during Saturday's game against Torquay with injury.

Paul Stonehouse and Rob Duffy are the other confirmed absentees after picking up knocks over the weekend whilst the fitness of top scorer Paul Connor is 50/50 as he continues to recover from a hamstring strain.

David Holdsworth believes that the plague of injuries that we have endured in recent weeks has had a negative impact on results and undoubtedly contributed to our six game winless streak in the league.

He said: "We have been extremely unfortunate with suspensions and injuries which have made it very hard in the last two games.

"Any manager will tell you that having to make so many replacements is unhelpful. When you are having to replace two players before half time, as happened in the Crawley game, you become very stretched."

As we look to end a barren run of form tomorrow night at 10th placed Kettering, the Gaffer said that the dressing room remained upbeat and that we could see the arrival of new centre forward Danny Mitchley to complement the squad.

He added: "I'm a positive man and always will be. If my players were not playing well then I would be worried but that is not the case.

"We are fine defensively but I've only had one fully fit centre forward in the last month. Things are not easy.

"I'm hoping to sign a new player (Mitchley) on non contract terms because we are stretched. He is a young boy who I've been looking at in training."

Looking ahead to our clash with the Poppies, we will go there hoping to end the home side's rich vein of form which has seen them take five wins from their last seven games in the BSBP.

The Gaffer finished by saying that despite the difference in recent form between the sides, supporters could be confident of an entertaining and attacking game tomorrow evening as we look to get back to winning ways.

"Any intelligent person can see that the performances have not warranted defeats so I'm not about to go all defensive," he said. "It isn't in my mannerism.

"Kettering have talented players and got a good win down at Newport. Hopefully, with respect, we will go there and get the win.

"When the chips are down, the players will work even harder."

Holdsworth looks to bring in forward
mansfieldtown.net, Mon 08 Nov 2010
Manager David Holdsworth is hoping to secure the services of young striker Danny Mitchley.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10325~2212479,00.html

The former Blackpool frontman has impressed during a trial period here at Field Mill in recent weeks and the Gaffer is now looking to add him to our injury depleted squad on non-contract terms.

With Rob Duffy, Peter Vincenti and Paul Connor all looking doubtful for our trip to Kettering tomorrow, Holdsworth added: I'm hoping to sign a new player on non contract terms because we are so stretched. He is a young boy who I've been looking at in training."

The 21-year-old is currently a free agent following his release by Premiership side Blackpool back in June. Born in Liverpool, Mitchley spent time at both Oldham and Wigan's Centres of Excellence before signing for the Tangerines in 2008.

Mitchley starred at both youth and reserve level but with Blackpool riding high in the Championship, and then pushing towards promotion last season, he was loaned out to Southport, Burscough and finally Wrexham in March this year to gain first team experience.

It is hoped that his signing will be completed in time for our visit to Rockingham Road tomorrow evening.

Winger Ryan Williams has extended his loan spell at Gainsborough Trinity for a further month.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10325~2212344,00.html

The fortunes of the Conference North outfit have drastically improved since Williams' arrival.

Gainsborough now lie in 11th place, having previously hovered above the relegation zone when the 32-year-old joined last month.

Said boss David Holdsworth: "Ryan is enjoying his stay at Gainsborough and will continue to play a part in moving them up the table."

Injury crisis for Stags
CHAD.co.uk, Mon Nov 08 2010

MANSFIELD Town are facing a huge injury crisis ahead of tomorrow night's daunting trip to Kettering Town.

http://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-fc/injury_crisis_for_stags_1_2745742

Already without Alan Marriott and Rhys Day, the suffering Stags have also now lost Kyle Nix (ankle ligaments) and Gary Silk (hamstring) from Saturday with Paul Connor (hamstring), Peter Vincenti (concussion and dislocated nose) and Paul Stonehouse (thigh and shoulder) all very doubtful.

Boss David Holdsworth may sign young striker Danny Mitchley on non-contract terms just to make up the numbers if needed.

Mitchley, formerly of Blackpool, played for Stags in pre-season and has recently been training with them again.

Without a win in six BSBP games before last weekend's FA Cup exit at home to Torquay, Mansfield head down the M1 to face a revitalised Poppies side with five wins and two draws in their last seven league games.

“I have not been able to put a settled side out for a few weeks now with injuries and have had to make six substitutions in two games, all with injuries.

“So it's not the best preparation for tomorrow. No one could predict we would have this many injuries at once.

“Kyle and Gary could be out for up to six weeks and we are waiting on the rest. If we can patch any of them up we will ask them to play if they can and get through it.

“Gary Mills is due back next week and we may recall Tom Naylor too if needed.

“Kettering have always been a strong side before they decided to change their manager. Now they have a different approach with a lone striker in a 4-3-3 and it will be a physical game.”

However, Stags have agreed to extend winger Ryan Williams' loan spell at Gainsborough Trinity for a further month.

The fortunes of the Conference North outfit have drastically improved since Williams' arrival.

Gainsborough now lie in 11th place, having previously hovered above the relegation zone when the 32-year-old first signed.

"Ryan is enjoying his stay at Gainsborough and will continue to play a part in moving them up the table,"
said boss David Holdsworth.

Meanwhile, Holdsworth hopes to sign 21-year-old striker Danny Mitchley on non-contract terms before tomorrow night's away match at Kettering Town.

Stags face injury crisis ahead of Kettering trip
MANSFIELD Town face an injury crisis ahead of their trip to Kettering Town tonight.

The Stags are hunting their first victory in seven Blue Square Bet Premier matches at Rockingham Road.

But their plans have been hit by the a spate of injuries, meaning up to nine players could be unavailable.

Gary Silk (hamstring tear) and Kyle Nix (ankle ligaments) both face several weeks out after picking up injuries in Saturday's FA Cup tie against Torquay.

Forwards Paul Connor (hamstring), Peter Vincenti (concussion), Rob Duffy (groin) and Luke Medley (knee) are doubts.

Paul Stonehouse (thigh and shoulder) is also struggling, while Rhys Day is suspended and Alan Marriott (groin) is a long-term absentee.

It has forced boss David Holdsworth to recall Ben Turner from his loan at North Ferriby and Tom Naylor could return from Alfreton.

And 21-year-old striker Danny Mitchley – who played for the Stags in pre-season – is set to sign non-contract forms in time for the trip to Northants.

"We have gone three months without having many injuries and then all of a sudden the treatment table is full," said Holdsworth.

"It is going to be a case of seeing who is fit before I pick the team for Kettering, I can't do anything else.

"When results go against you there is often a drop in confidence – that's the same in any dressing room in the country.

"But I am extremely proud of the way the boys are sticking together.

"We were close to causing an upset against Torquay on Saturday and were just missing that cutting edge."

Nix: Still time for Mansfield Town to come good
MANSFIELD Town's recent barren run may have dimmed optimism on the terraces, but Kyle Nix is defiant that the current squad can still turn things around and get the Stags' promotion push back on track.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/mansfieldtown/Nix-time-Mansfield-Town-come-good/article-2850380-detail/article.html

Early on in the season, it looked as if David Holdsworth's men would be strong contenders at the top end of the Blue Square Premier table.

And they still can be, believes midfielder Nix.

While Mansfield may be at something of a low ebb after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Torquay United in the FA Cup first round, their fifth defeat in eight matches, he remains convinced the ability and desire within the squad will eventually lead to better times.

Tricky away games at Kettering tonight and Forest Green on Saturday await, although Nix himself could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring ankle ligaments at the weekend.

Long-term, though, he believes the future is still bright.

"You look at the lads in the team and on the bench and it is a very competitive squad," said Nix. "Everyone brings something to the team.

"We have got a good mixture and with the loan players coming in they will add their own bit of quality. Some of them have won promotions before.

"We have shown we can do it, but we have to get through this blip. There are still months and months of the season to go and a long way before anything is decided."

It may be early in the campaign, but Nix already knows he and others are fighting for their Mansfield futures.

The takeover by John Radford at the end of September means a clutch of new players have arrived on loan in the shape of Kevin Pilkington, Simon Grand, Rhys Day, Steve Cook, Adam Murray and Peter Vincenti.

More new blood is likely to arrive in January when the permanent transfer window opens, while Nix and others are out of contract at the end of the season.

He said: "When you cross that white line you have to be able to take the pressure.

"You have to take the criticism when you are not winning, just as you shouldn't get to thinking you are world beaters during a good spell.

"We have to work for our new contracts and whether we get one is up to each one of us."

Some supporters have been left frustrated by the number of changes made to the team in the last few games.

But Nix insists that cannot always be helped – and those involved should be canny enough to make it work.

"You forget about formations and whose playing when the game gets under way," he said.

"Formations are not a big thing and I think we can get positive results playing any way. Some people see 4-3-3 as 4-5-1, but when you have such attacking players as Adam Smith and Louis Briscoe, it is definitely an attacking formation.

"You do really want to play a settled formation ideally, but it is not always practical to do it because of injuries and suspensions."

Former Bradford City man Nix has played much of his football over the past few weeks with Adam Murray, a player he greatly admires.

He said: "Muzza is comfortable on the ball and you can see that in training.

"He likes to get the ball down and pass it, brings a lot of composure and experience and has a good engine.

"He wants to get back in the Football League, which is what has attracted a lot of players to Mansfield."

Previously, Nix had frequently shared his job in the middle with Gary Mills, who has since spent a loan spell at Forest Green.

"Everyone could see that some of the supporters gave him quite a hard time," said Mills.

"It's hard on anyone when you get that much stick, but the fans have their opinion. I'm sure some of the fans have not taken a liking to me or some of the other lads. But Millsy is a good player and no one in the squad wanted to see him go.

"While he is on loan, he is still part of the club and if the loan is not extended then he could still come back into the reckoning here."

In his first ever interview exclusively with mansfieldtown.net, the former Blackpool man said that he was relieved to have finally agreed terms after training with the club for a number of weeks.

Danny Mitchley is in conversation with our Head of Media & Communications Mark Stevenson

He said: "I've been here a good few weeks now and the Gaffer has given me a good chance to show him and everyone else here what I can do.

"The lads are all great. They have helped me settle in and are all good players which is why they are here.

"I've got a lot to prove because the manager has shown a lot of faith in me to give me this chance."

Mitchley says that he looks forward to competing with the likes of Paul Connor, Keigan Parker, Rob Duffy and Peter Vincenti for a place up front in an attempt to secure a more permanent deal. The terms of his non-contract deal mean that he will be judged on a week by week basis as he strives to make a name for himself at Field Mill

He added: "I will just be here training for now and playing if the Gaffer sees fit to play me.

"I'm looking to push on now and score some goals at a higher level. I want to be here full time and playing every week.

"There are five or six good strikers here. Everyone's trying to impress to play so I'm going to have to work hard to move some of them out of the way and play."
