The 27-year-old was also wanted by Blue Square Bet North side Gainsborough Trinity but opted to move to Moss Lane.

Midfielder Somner came through the ranks at Brentford and has since had spells at Cambridge United, Aldershot, Bristol Rovers and Notts County.

He is yet to feature this season for Mansfield but is expected to go straight into Altrincham's squad for Saturday's match against Fleetwood.

The tough-tackling midfielder finished last season in the Stags' first team, playing in the 3-3 home draw with Kidderminster Harriers.

But the 27-year-old has struggled to break into the side this season, finding his path barred by the likes of Kyle Nix, Gary Mills, Steven Istead, Adam Murray and Tyrone Thompson.

Former Notts County man Somner has made 65 appearances for the Stags to date, scoring once, since joining in the summer of 2008.

Blue Square North side Gainsborough Trinity also expressed their interest in signing him on loan.

GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY chairman Peter Swann revealed the Blues could lose out to Blue Square Bet Premier side Altrincham, in their bid to sign midfielder Matt Somner.

The Trinity chief has confirmed that changes, in and out of the club, could be afoot this week and is still hopeful of sealing a deal for the 28-year old ahead of Saturday's clash at Corby.

However, the Robins' interest in the former Brentford and Notts County hard-man may have scuppered the struggling Blue Square Bet North side's chances.

Blues boss Brian Little is desperate to make changes to his squad after guiding Gainsborough to only their second win of the season, at Blyth Spartans, on Saturday, and has already allowed striker Jefferson Louis to join Darlington on a three-month loan.

Midfield seems to be the biggest window for change with summer capture from Corby, Leon Hibbert, not living up to his pre-season billing and fellow new face Emeka Nwadike having been out with an Achilles injury since joining the club.

...

"We were hoping to bring in Matt Somner on loan, but I think he is going to go to Altrincham," said Swann.

"He is the sort of quality player that we are looking for and we went for him last week.

"He was then needed for Mansfield's game at Rushden on Saturday and then I heard yesterday that Altrincham had come in for him.

"I remain hopeful though and I would like to see him at Trinity."

...

"Ryan Williams came in from Mansfield and did a great job on his debut.

"He is a good technical player and brings others into the game. He is fit and that sort of player can change a whole team."
