Stags keeper Marriott could be sidelined for six months with stomach injury
Evening Post, 5 Aug 2010

MANSFIELD Town face the possibility of losing goalkeeper Alan Marriott for up to six months – if he requires surgery on a stomach muscle injury.

The ever-reliable shot stopper has been sidelined for a chunk of pre-season with the problem.

Former Lincoln man Marriott has been resting up in a bid to get fit for the start of the campaign against Forest Green Rovers on August 14.

It was hoped he would return to training this week and take some part in Saturday's final friendly of pre-season against Alfreton.

However, according to Stags boss David Holdsworth, the 31-year-old is still feeling 'twinges'.

Last season's multi player of the year award winner may have a scan if those problems persist.

And if that assessment delivers bad news, it could lead to an operation and an extended stint of action.

But Holdsworth is hoping it will not come to that and said: "We will be testing Alan in training after he has been given the relevant rest.

"We are taking advice on his injury and we are hoping he does not have to have an operation.

"It is not a situation you like to happen eight days before the start of the season to your number one goalkeeper.

"To lose Alan would be a bitter blow and I'm crossing everything in the hope he will be alright. He has been one of my best signings.

"We are hoping it settles down with rest, but, if not, we will do things right and have to call on another goalkeeper, as Neil Collett would be the only one we have.

"The young goalkeepers at the club are certainly not ready for inclusion.

"But it all depends if Alan is out. If he were out to three to six months then we would have to bring in someone on loan, but it is all hypothetical at this stage."

STAGS goalkeeper Alan Marriott could be out of action for between 'three to six months' if he needs surgery for a stomach muscle injury.

Marriott - who has missed the friendlies against Eastwood, Buxton and Hucknall - had hoped to be fit for the Blue Square Bet Premier opener against Forest Green Rovers on 14th August.

But Mansfield manager David Holdsworth confirmed on Thursday that the former Lincoln stopper is still feeling twinges and could have a scan if the injury fails to clear.

And the Stags boss fears Marriott may have to go under the knife if the results are not encouraging - which would leave the club with just Neil Collett to draft in.

Said Holdsworth: "It is not a situation you like to happen eight days before the start of the season to your number one goalkeeper.

"To lose Alan would be a bitter blow and I'm crossing everything in the hope he will be alright.

"Alan has been one of my best signings. He is an integral part of our team. I hope it doesn't happen that way. I hope it can clear up with just rest between games.

"If it doesn't we'll have to look at another goalkeeper, as Neil Collett would be the only one we have.

"The young goalkeepers at the club are certainly not ready for inclusion.

"But it all depends if Alan is out. If he were out to three to six months then we would have to bring in someone on loan, but it is all hypothetical at this stage."
