Mansfield request an FA review

Mansfield Town have requested that the FA review a clip of Saturday's 3-0 home FA Cup victory over Altrincham, in which visiting defender James Smith appeared to strike Jake Speight off the ball.

The incident was highlighted to senior referees administrator Peter Elsworth, who advised the Stags to take the matter further.

However, the club are determined not to make a big issue out of the review, with chairman Andy Perry and manager David Holdsworth's revealing that they are merely showing their support for Speight.

"We do not want to make a song and dance of it but we are supporting our player which is the correct and professional thing to do," Perry told The Chad.

"This sort of thing has no place in football and we don't want it happening again."

Holdsworth added: "I don't want to make too much of the incident though I will always stand up for my players and this football club.

"Things have been brought to light by a video clip and the chairman has now got involved. I have left it down to him. The incident being on a website has seen it gain momentum. Now you can view incidents like that through technology.

"I do not condone it, having been on the receiving end of a few and dished out a few tackles too in the past. It is a physical game.

"The hardest part is that I do like James Smith and what he seemed to do was uncharacteristic but maybe part of the emotion of the day.

"I though he was one of their best players but the incident was a poor one on his behalf."

FA to probe 'assault' on Speight
CHAD.co.uk, 27 October 2009
MANSFIELD Town have asked the FA to have a look at a video clip that shows Altrincham defender James Smith appear to hit Stags striker Jake Speight off the ball during Saturday's 3-0 home FA Cup victory.

http://www.chad.co.uk/stags/FA-to-probe-assault-on.5769385.jp

It continues the bitterness between the clubs which saw two Alty players sent off three weeks ago in the BSP clash and another near the end of Saturday's convincing Stags win which booked them a First Round tie at BSP strugglers Forest Green Rovers on Saturday week.

The video clip was shown to senior referees administrator Peter Elsworth who has agreed it should be seen by the FA disciplinary department.

Chairman Andy Perry said: "We do not want to make a song and dance of it but we are supporting our player which is the correct and professional thing to do.

"This sort of thing has no place in football and we don't want it happening again.

"I was shocked to see it on the video. We knew Jake wasn't the sort of player to feign injury. Having seen what happened I was suprised how he recovered and carried on again.

"It looked horrendous on the clip and it was pre-meditated challenge too."

Boss David Holdsworth added: "I don't want to make too much of the incident though I will always stand up for my players and this football club.

"Things have been brought to light by a video clip and the chairman has now got involved. I have left it down to him. The incident being on a web site has seen it gain momentum. Now you can view incidents like that through technology.

"I did ask the fourth official if he had seen anything at the time but I didn't put him under severe pressure like happened to a fourth official in a game we were involved in recently. But he just said he could barely see anything beacuse of the sun.

"I do not condone it, having been on the receiving end of a few and dished out a few tackles too in the past. It is a physical game.

"The hardest part is that I do like James Smith and what he seemed to do was uncharacteristic but maybe part of the emotion of the day.

"I though he was one of their best players but the incident was a poor one on his behalf.

"But I have seen much worse and, to be fair, Jake dusted himself down and got on with it."

Stags lodge FA complaint over elbowing incident
Evening Post, Tuesday, October 27, 2009

MANSFIELD Town have lodged a complaint to the FA over an alleged use of the elbow by Altrincham's James Smith on the Stags' Jake Speight.

A video posted on YouTube appears to show the Robins' central defender connect with the face of the Mansfield forward in an off-the-ball-incident.
Chairman Andy Perry feels disciplinary action against Smith should be forthcoming for what he calls a 'disgraceful' incident.
"The video evidence has been sent to the FA and is being passed on to their disciplinary department," said Perry.
"Someone is then likely to be in touch with us to see what the next step is.
"You cannot condone something like that on a football pitch – it was a disgrace.
"It is not nice seeing someone do that to a fellow-professional. There are strong challenges in games, that is part of it, but that was malicious.
"If that was out on the streets then it would be seen as ABH. If Jake wants to pursue any action himself, then the club would back him in that.
"We are certainly expecting that Smith will get a ban. Things like that don't do football any credit at all."
Mansfield boss David Holdsworth said he saw the incident at the time and was incensed no action was taken.
But he says he is moving on and if the matter is taking any further it will be from board level.
"I have left it down to the chairman, but he has contacted me with his thoughts," said Holdsworth.
"I did ask the fourth official if he had seen it, but I didn't put him under severe pressure – and he said he couldn't see anything for the sun.
"I didn't really want to make too much of the incident because I like James Smith as a person and that type of thing is not normally in his character.
"I'm sure he will understand that he has let himself down.
"But we must respect that incidents are seen because of the technology in the stands."

New Stags trialists to play at Notts
Evening Post, Tuesday, October 27, 2009

MANSFIELD Town have two more new trialists in their ranks for today's friendly against Notts County.

James McQuilkin, 20, a right-sided midfielder, is on the books of Hereford United but has been given permission to play by the Bulls.
And Stags boss David Holdsworth will also run the rule over 6ft 4ins American central defender Anthony Peters, 26, who has been with Chicago Fire and Cleveland City Stars.
Richard Langley will be given a chance to impress, but Kevin Thornton will not play because of illness.
Craig Dobson, who made his debut for the first team against Altrincham will play 30 minutes as he bids to build his fitness, while Blair Sturrock is to start up front.
As Mansfield's youth team take on Chesterfield in the FA Youth Cup at Saltergate tonight, a number of under-16 players are also likely to be given a run-out.
"Hereford have made a lot of changes and James may be deemed surplus to requirements there," said Holdsworth.
"But I have had my eye on the kid and he has a good pedigree.
"It is also a chance for Anthony to show what he can do."

Stags' Somner out of Histon game
Evening Post, October 26, 2009

MATT Somner is suspended for Mansfield Town's game against Histon on Saturday after picking up five bookings.

http://www.thisismansfieldtown.co.uk/news/Stags-Somner-Histon-game/article-1452461-detail/article.html

The midfielder was cautioned in the second half of the Stags' 3-0 FA Cup victory over Altrincham on Saturday.
He will serve a one-match ban, making him unavailable against the Stutes, but he will be back for the FA Cup first round tie at Forest Green Rovers a week on Saturday.
Somner said: "It's gutting to not be involved against Histon, but I knew it was going to happen sooner or later.
"I have been on four bookings for a few games and was holding out.
"I didn't play at Histon last season (when Mansfield lost 3-0) because I was serving a suspension then as well.
"It's frustrating because I was just starting to get a decent little partnership with Millsy (Gary Mills) going.
"But we have some very good players to come in such as Ollie Hotchkiss and Steven Istead, who has done really well when playing in our last two away matches."
