Minstermen turn to Mansfield Town centre-back Alan O'Hare as new defensive recruit

Updated: YORK City have acted quickly to sign former Mansfield Town defender Alan O'Hare after missing out on Ebbsfleet centre-back Darius Charles.

Manager Martin Foyle has also admitted he always had his doubts about the move for Charles because of the player's reservations over uprooting his pregnant girlfriend and had placed O'Hare on standby for that reason.

When Charles turned down a transfer to Bootham Crescent almost 12 hours after City had announced the “successful signings” of both he and his Ebbsfleet team-mate Michael Gash, Foyle, therefore, wasted no time in recruiting Irish defender O'Hare.

Striker Gash, who scored 11 goals in 39 Blue Square Premier appearances last season, was part of an £80,000 offer from City, along with Charles, that was accepted by the Kent outfit's MyFootballClub owners.

The former Cambridge United forward is now the subject of a new bid from the Minstermen, thought to be in the region of £50,000.

About O'Hare's arrival, Foyle said: “Alan is what we need – a left-sided centre-half. He's been on the back-burner for a while and has been very patient but he knew about the deal the chairman was working very hard on with Darius.

“I was up front and honest with him and I always had a feeling something wasn't right with Darius and I'm delighted Alan's on board now.

“He's a decent pro and a hard-working professional. He also wants to play for the club and that means a lot.”

O'Hare, 26, started out as an apprentice with Bolton Wanderers but failed to break into the first team and moved to Chesterfield after a loan spell in 2002.

He went on to play 170 games for the Spireites in League One and Two and was signed for Mansfield by former City boss Billy McEwan last summer.

The Drogheda-born defender played 25 league games for the Stags during 2008/9 but enjoyed only four outings after Christmas.

O'Hare will now contest City's central-defensive places with David McGurk and Daniel Parslow with Foyle adding: “All the squad needs competition.”

About the decision to go public on the Gash and Charles signings before pens were put to paper, Foyle said: “We had a verbal agreement but, at the last minute, the lad was concerned about his home life.

“That happens in football but I think the chairman did everything right and people don't realise how hard we have worked to get the deal up and running so I won't accept any criticism on our behalf.”

Released City defender Shaun Pejic is weighing up his options after being approached by clubs in the USA and Greece.

Corby Town boss Graham Drury has completed his summer transfer activity with the capture of winger Jamie McGhee from Blue Square Premier side Mansfield Town.
McGhee, 20, played for the Stags in the Football League when he was just 17 but fell out of favour under the new management at Field Mill last year.

"He was looking for a new challenge and direction in his career and he feels we are the best club to offer him that," said Drury.

"He's quick and he's very direct in his style and approach which will give us another option going forward.

"He'll certainly add plenty of pace to the side and I'm looking forward to seeing him develop as a player for us as the season goes on."

McGhee's capture gives Drury 23 players in his squad to start pre-
season with ahead of the Steelmen's first campaign in Blue Square North.

As well as McGhee, the other new face in the Steelmen ranks is Corby lad Billy McKay, who will join them for pre-season after being released by Leicester City at the end of the last campaign.

"Billy has been looking sharp and we'll have to see what happens with him over the next few weeks as to whether he stays but things have been looking positive," commented Drury.

"I'm not actively looking to bring in any more players now but of course you never know what might suddenly crop up out of the blue.
"If a very good player suddenly becomes available and would suit us then of course I'm going to be interested.

"I'd never say never but as far as I am concerned at the moment, this is the squad of players we will start pre-season with now and I don't envisage any anyone else coming in"

The Steelmen are now back in training ahead of their first pre-season match against Southern League neighbours Rothwell Town on July 9.

Pilgrims snap up Mansfield defender

Article Date: 1 Jul 2009

Boston United have recruited Mansfield Town defender Chris Wood as their sixth summer signing.

The 22-year-old is capable of playing at right-back or centre-half and has joined the Pilgrims following his release by Blue Square Premier outfit Mansfield.

The Worksop-born player progressed from the Field Mill youth ranks and spent two successful loan spells with Ilkeston Town — one of which was under the management of Rob Scott and Paul Hurst last season.

Following Wood's capture, Scott told bufc.co.uk: “Chris is another versatile performer, who will add quality and depth to our defensive options.

“The squad is starting to come together nicely and Chris' arrival compliments what we already have onboard.”

Wood made 15 appearances for Mansfield in the Football League, having been awarded his first professional contract in 2006.
