Clare agrees move to the Stags
CHAD.co.uk, 21 May 2009, By John Lomas
MANSFIELD Town's hopes of suces next season were given a huge shot in the arm today when goal ace Daryl Clare (30) agreed to a permanent move to Field Mill.
The talismanic striker scored once and showed glimpses of his talents in nine games on loan to Stags from Rushden and Diamonds at the end of last season when short of full fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Jersey-born Irishman only started four of those games - and joins Duffy, Silk and Somner in staying at the Stags, as well as newcomers Speight, Graham and Jones.

He has signed on a one-year deal and said: "It's nice to be at a club where I feel happy. This is a good club with exciting times ahead."

But Clare is a legendary goalscorer at the lower levels and his goals have helped Grimsbyv Town to promotion from Division Two and shot Chester City and Boston United out of the Conference into the Footbal League.

He also helped fire Burton Albion into a play-off semi-final where his two goals were not enough to get them into the final.

Manager David Holdsworth has promised to get Clare as fit as he has ever been this summer.

"This is a name the fans have been wanting for a few years," said delighted chairman Andy Perry.

"Daryl is now 30 and he is a great professional and very astute in the business of football.

"There will be no better box player in this division next season.
"But we have to make sure we get the ball into positions for him.

"Daryl may not look the quickest player if he gets the ball out wide but there were a couple of bursts of pace inside the box last season that were fantastic.

"His fitness levels are now where the gaffer wants them and I think he will be the gem that gets us the goals next season.

"Daryl is great in the dressing room and very good for the kids. he has already taken young Conor Higginsonn under his wing.

"By signing Daryl I think it shows our intent to the fans.

"This club will not be about big names next season - the manager is not a fan of celebrity names. Daryl is a name at this level but he has the CV to back it up and we want to move forward."
