SATURDAY'S matchwinner Scott Garner is celebrating again after landing the Blue Square Premier Player of the Month for January.

The 19-year-old Garner crowned four good displays since joining Stags with the winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 win at Eastbourne Borough.

"I didn't expect this and things couldn't have gone better, could they?" he said.

"I got a text to come back to the ground and they said congratulations to me on my award on reception.

"I only found out I was in the running yesterday. I was surprised to be even in the nominations let along win it.

"The others were all experienced and well known Conference players. So I knew I was up against some good ones.

"It tells me I must be doing well at this level."

He added: "It is a step up from Ilkeston though I have played at youth and reserve level for Leicester City. But this is a great level to play at - especially at my age.

"My first game was really tough against big Steve Fletcher - they don't come much tougher than that.

"This is a great set up and I hope I can keep going forward under the gaffer."

Already Holdsworth is tipping Garner to make the big time and Garner said: "It just makes me want to push on even more and work even harder every day. He won't let me dip."

"Mansfield is a big club and shouldn't be where it is. This must be one of the best stadiums in the league.

"We just want to push on now. We want to get into that top half. Hopefully we can stop looking behind us now as we were well in the middle of it all when I came here.

"Obviously you can see the play-offs out the corner of your eye but there is still a big gap we would have to make up. But if not this time then we will push for it next season."

"Scott has been magnificent and I am delighted he has won this," said manager David Holdsworth.

"Full credit to the kid. He deserves it.

"I am sure he will echo me in saying Adie Moses has been a fantastic role model alongside him. He has shown him the way.

"Scott has got the accolade but Adie deserves a lot of priase for him getting this recognition.

"Scott is a great covering defnder and his fluency on the ground helps Adie do his job.

"I have seen enough to know he has every attribute needed to go to the top. And I will keep on pushing him and give him a clip round the ear if needed.

"He comes from a nice family and a great background which helps. I hope Scott used that £50 he won on Saturday to treat his mum and dad to a glass of wine!"

Garner proud of accolade
Evening Post, February 03, 2009

SCOTT Garner today spoke of his shock at being named the Blue Square Premier player of the month – just four matches into his Mansfield career.

The 19-year-old central defender only signed for the Stags from Leicester City early in the New Year after previously playing for David Holdsworth on loan at Ilkeston.
But he has made such an impression at Field Mill with his heading ability, reading of the game and pace that he has been singled out as the league's star performer for January.
He beat off five other contenders to get the nod.
"I didn't expect it at all and I only found out on Monday that I was going to be on the shortlist," said Garner.

I suppose this tells you that I am doing well at this level after the step-up from Ilkeston.
"I have been playing quite regularly in Leicester's reserves, but this is a good level to be playing at. Getting this just makes me want to push on and work even harder."
Garner, who names Manchester United duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as the players he admires most, believes keeping a clean sheet in his first game against Crawley has inspired his good form.
He said: "That was a tough first game because Steve Fletcher is hard to play against. But I felt if I could cope against him then I wouldn't struggle against anyone in this league.
"(Central defensive partner) Adie Moses brings me along with his experience and helps you through games.
"And having Mazza (Alan Marriott) is great. You wouldn't want any other keeper because if the ball is anything more than four foot over the top of you, he will come and get it."
Garner is hoping that Mansfield's relegation worries are now over.
Manager Holdsworth was in the running for the manager of the month award after three wins and a draw from four games.
But Stevenage boss Graham Westley was given the nod after his team's six victories on the spin.
"I'm not bothered about me, but I am delighted for Scott," said Holdsworth. "Full credit to the kid because he deserves it.
"Adie Moses deserves praise as well for the recognition because he has been a fantastic role model for Scott and shown him the way."
