McEwan launches reserve team sponsorship plea
CHAD.co.uk, 18 Aug 08
STAGS boss Billy McEwan is appealing for a sponsor to come foward and back the club's plans to run a reserve side this season.

McEwan knows the importance of having a second string and is hoping someone out there will do what a company did for him when he was York City boss and financially back it.

After several seasons without a reserve team, Stags have been accepted into the Central League for this season but McEwan said: "It will eat into my budget and the club's budget and what we really need is a sponsor who will help us run it.

"I made a similar appeal at York when they were going to scrap the reserve team there. I feel is is essential to have one.
"If you don't have a reserve team it affects the first team and the whole set-up.

"It gives players the chance to play. Our keeper here has only been getting about 10 games a season. How can you retain match sharpness if you are only playing once in a blue moon?

"I need the games so players coming back from injury can sharpen up and also to have a look at trialists. It gives youth team players the chance to step up.

"It is not easy to run a reserve team as it is costly travelling up and down the country. But if you don't play in a league it can be hard to get friendlies this level as League clubs sometimes don't think you will give them tough enough opposition."

He added: "We need to bring the young boys along too. It is a big thing for them to get in the team.

"If they have been brought up supporting Mansfield Town then to play for the club is a dream come true. They sometimes have a bit more feeling for the club than someone who has played for three or four clubs and come in from elsewhere."

With Forest playing Sunderland in the Carling Cup next week, the first reserve game scheduled for Tuesday, 26th August has been postponed.
So Stags' Central League campaign is now due to start on 10th September at home to Shrewsbury (7pm).

Billy draws up Stags shopping list
CHAD.co.uk, 19 Aug 08
BILLY McEwan has a goalkeeper, two defenders and a midfield player on his shopping list at the moment as he seeks to strengthen his squad.

Stags have made a good start, taking seven of the first possible nine points.

But he is aware that the squad is far from complete and said: "I know that we are still short.

"The transfer window is on 31st of the month but I can always use the loan system after that. I know whre the players are and I have got to go and get them.

"I am still looking for a goalkeeper, a couple of defenders and possibly a midfielder. I feel we are okay up front at the moment."

One player who won't be joining him is former Halifax defender Adam Quin who had been training with Stags but opted to join BSP rivals Crawley.

"We had been helping Adam get fit here so I was disappointed to get a call from him to say he was off to join Crawley before we had even talked about finance.

"But they had made him a huge offer which I wouldn't have given him, even if he was fit.

"They can pay much bigger money than we can so I won't lose any sleep over it."

Stags boss disappointed at Quinn exit
Evening Post, 18 Aug 08
Mansfield boss Billy McEwan today revealed his frustration that Adam Quinn chose to join Blue Square Rivals Crawley Town without speaking to him first.

The former Halifax Town central defender had been training with the Stags while he regained fitness.

McEwan was keeping tabs on the former Sheffield Wednesday trainee and mulling over offering the player terms.

However, Quinn instead chose to join the Sussex side last week.

“I got a phone call and was told he signed for Crawley after he had been training with us and getting back in contention,” said McEwan.

“He never gave us the option to talk finance, which is disappointing.

“But he had his heart set on going to Crawley who put in a huge offer which we wouldn't have been able to give him here, even if he had been fully fit.”

Left-sided player Craig Nelthorpe has left the club after playing in the pre-season friendly defeat at Boston United.

Goalkeeper Jason White has seen a specialist and is due to have a scan this week on his injured knee.

“He's going to have to have an operation,” said McEwan. “How big it is we won't know until he gets the results of the scan.”

Meanwhile, the Stags boss has confirmed they will enter a competitive reserve league this season.

Mansfield will join the likes of Nottingham Forest in the Pontins League Central Division.
