MANSFIELD TOWN YOUTH 4-2 PORT VALE YOUTH
WEDNESDAY 11TH SPETEMBER
MIDLAND YOUTH CUP 1ST ROUND

Report by Gordon Cleugh at Field Mill
Stags took a 2 goal lead early in the second half put Port Vale fought back to level the match with 2 goals in a minute. Two late goals from Mitchell and Mulligan ensured a safe passage to round 2.

Stags: Coates, Davies, Hurst, Carter, Baptiste, Buxton, Robinson, Jones, Mitchell, Mulligan, Lloyd
Subs: Draper, Ryalls, Hankey

Port Vale: Molloy, Gowland, Brown, Mitchell, Booth, Robinson, Orpe, Doxey, O'Reilly, Hibbert, Reid
Subs: Brownfield, Sly, Winters, Holmes

Just like the Worthington Cup match last night, the match had a controversial incident after just 90 seconds. Mitchell was making a run into the box and was tripped by a Vale defender. Carter's shot along the ground from the spot to the keeper's right was rather weak and the keeper saved easily.

Stags dominated the early exchanges and Mulligan and Mitchell were able to beat the Vale offside trap on several occasions and created several chances. One shot from Mulligan was blocked by the keeper's legs and Baptiste thundered his header from the rebound against the crossbar. Robinson was booked for a challenge in the 15th minute which did not look too dissimilar to Williamson's last night. Vale almost opened the scoring moments later when a corner from the right was headed against the crossbar.

Stags finally broke the deadlock 5 minutes before half time when Carter slid in at the far post to meet Mitchell's cross from the left.

Stags extended the lead 5 minutes into the second half when Buxton headed in a corner from the right. A few minutes later, Hibbert was running wide into the box and was rather needlessly brought down by Coates. He escaped any punishment and, although he managed to get a hand to Doxey's well struck kick, it found the a back of the net. Within a minute of the restart, Stags failed to clear a Vale attack and the ball fell to Doxey who rifled his shot in from the edge of the box.

Hankey replaced Lloyd for the last quarter. Stags took the lead again when Mitchell cut in from the right and shot from the edge of the box. Mulligan sealed the win for Stags 6 minutes later with a curling shot from just outside the box which found the top right hand corner of the net.
