STAGSNET SPIREITE PREVIEW
23rd August 2002 13:48

The Stags will certainly be without full backs Allen Tankard and Bobby Hassell for Saturdays derby clash. However, Shayne Bradley made a goal-scoring return for the Reserves in midweek and could feature on the bench. Also in contention is new signing Mark Lever, who also featured in the midweek Reserve fixture and could start the game. The Spireites will be without injured duo Blatherwick and ebdon and also have injury concerns over Reeves and Brandon. A crowd of over 8,000 is expected at Field Mill, though the visitors have failed to sell their full allocation.

Stats by Svante Bernhard:

For seven of the eight decades the Stags have played league soccer there has been an emotion-laden local derby against Chesterfield, or the Spireites if you use nicknames. The first derbies took place as long ago as in the 1933-34 season with the Spireites just relegated from the old second division and the Stags in their third league season. The first derbies were won by the spireites, but on September 15, 1934, the Stags won a derby for the first time, with the only goal of the game. One could write a book on the derbies and the players who have played for both sides during the years, so here comes some of it:

As one may expect, there are lots of players who've pulled on a Stag and a Spireite shirt during their league careers. To name but a few, here is a selection: Billy McEwan, Ernie Moss, Kevin Randall (all three played for the Stags in the promo season in 1976-77), Tony Lormor, Paul Holland.

First away win at Chesterfield, a 4-1 on April 12, 1958, the biggest away win a 4-0 on September 23, 1961.

Biggest away defeat: most recent Saltergate derby on September 16, 2000.

Biggest Stags home win: a 3-0 on October 22, 1962

Biggest Stags home defeat in a league derby: a 1-4 on December 20, 1952

Highest score in a home game: the Stags 4-2 win on December 18, 1994

Highest score in an away game and highest ever in a league derby: a 4-4-draw at Saltergate on September 17, 1962.

After the 0-1 home defeat on Boxing Day 1975, the Stags were unbeaten in 38 home league games, a club record.

Big crowds have often watched the derbies. To mark an example, here are the 1970-71 derby crowds: 13187 at Field Mill, 16474 at Saltergate.
