£1.5m too much for Stags says chairman
CHAD website, 04 April 2007

STAGS chairman James Derry has admitted that a rumoured £1.5m price tag for Mansfield Town is 'too much money' for the club –– but has confirmed a potential new buyer has already come forward.

The 'tentative' expression of interest comes just two weeks after Mr Derry and owner Keith Haslam announced nationally the that the club was for sale in response to continued pressure from supporters' groups.

Mr Derry this week told Chad the interested party was 'local', but was reluctant to give further details of the potential buyer's identity — saying he wanted to keep all information confidential at this stage.

He also dismissed recent speculation that Mansfield Town owner Keith Haslam was asking £1.5m for the club — but did confirm that any purchase would be for the club alone, with Mr Haslam retaining ownership of the land and charging the club rent.

"There has been an expression of interest — but it's a very tentative initial inquiry at this stage and we're waiting to see what happens," he said.

"£1.5m is too much money for the club, although I'm not prepared to say what kind of figure would be suitable It's always going to be difficult for someone to buy the land because of its long-term development potential."
