In the past, league games against Plymouth haven't proved good for the mighty Stags as only four games out of twenty-six (three at home, one away) have been won since the first FL outing between the two teams on October 18, 1958 in the old div 3, ending in a 1-4-defeat. The return fixture at Home Park on March 7, 1959, proved to be the one with most goals so far, unfortunately for the Stags a 3-8 defeat. The first Stags win was a 1-0 in their great FA cup year way back in 1969 and the last so far was a 2-0 on August 15, 1998. Only once have the Stags won at Plymouth, but that was a clear-cut one to the tune of 4-1 on September 9, 1978. And the return fixture on March 12, 1979, proved to be a disaster for the Pilgrims, who crashed 5-0, featured in the Vintage Stags section as well as the fixture in which the Stags broke their home goal famine in the 1971-72 season, unfortunately a 2-3 defeat on December 18, 1971.
Last season with Plymouth as champions helping the Mighty Stags into third position by beating Cheltenham 2-0 and the Mighty Stags doing exactly the same against Carlisle, Plymouth won both league games, 3-0 at the Mill on October 20, 2001, thanks to two late strikes and at Plymouth, a Friio strike five minutes before the final whistle, ensured maximum points on February 9, 2002. The teams have met at the Mill on an opening day before, and that was when the Stags last played in the new division 2 where a goal-less draw was fought out on August 15, 1992. The clubs have also met once in the FA cup, and that was a 3rd round tie on January 6, 1978, when Miller scored the only goal of the game. A player who's played for both side is George Foster who started his career at Plymouth and ended it at Mansfield in 1993. He was also manager for the Stags between 1989 and 1993.
