Dearden hopes to land new striker tomorrow
CHAD, 11 Jan 2007

Mansfield Town FC boss Bill Dearden tonight (Thursday) confirmed that he hopes to sign experienced striker Barry Conlon tomorrow.
But he stressed that despite reports from Darlington, the former York City and Barnsley frontman has not yet put pen to paper on a deal taking him to Field Mill.
Late today the official Darlington website reported that the Stags had taken over the striker's contract until the end of the season - ending the 28-year-old's second spell with the Quakers.
But tonight Dearden told Chad: "He is coming to down to Field Mill tomorrow for talks. He has not signed anything yet, but we are very hopeful.
"Nothing is definite, we have been talking to him for a while and those talks will continue on Friday.
"If we are able to sign him, it will be until the end of the season - and if he signs tomorrow hopefully he will play on Saturday."
Conlon has a career record averaging almost a goal every three games.
He enjoyed his best spell at Darlington from 2001-2004 and returned at the start of the season, smashing a hat-trick against Macclesfield.
But since former Doncaster boss Dave Penney took over in October, the Irishman lost a regular place in the side.
Penney said: "Sometimes they say you should never go back. We feel it is best for him to move on and get his career going elsewhere."

Mansfield have signed striker Barry Conlon from League Two rivals Darlington.

Conlon arrives at Field Mill on a free transfer after being allowed to leave Darlington.

The former Barnsley man dropped down the pecking order at Darlington following the arrival of Dave Penney in October.

Penney admitted he was sad to see Conlon leave the club.

"I'm disappointed it hasn't worked out for Baz because he's the kind of player I normally like in my team" said Penney. "I usually play with a big target man but he just hasn't done it for me.

"I wish him all the best for future though."

Darlington forward Barry Conlon is set to join Mansfield Town in a permanent deal. Quakers are awaiting the formalities of the deal to take place which will see the Stags take over the Irishman's contract at the Darlington Arena.

Conlon rejoined Darlington in the summer and on the opening day of the season bagged a hat-trick against Macclesfield Town in Quakers' 4-0 home win. Conlon went on to score three more goals but since Penney's arrival in October the former York City forward has been in and out of the side.

"They are just going to take his contract over," confirmed Penney. "He came to the club on a free and it hasn't really happened for him. Sometimes they say you should never go back. We just felt it was best for him to move on and get his career going elsewhere. It frees some wages up and allows us to bring someone else in."

The move to Mansfield brings to an end the player's second spell at the club. Conlon originally joined Darlington from York City in the summer of 2001. Before joining Darlington and the Minster men he had already been at a number of different clubs. He later moved on from Quakers to Barnsley but was snapped up for a second spell in the North East on a free transfer in the summer of 2006.
