DAWSON IS BACK FOR THE STAGS
EVENING POST, 9 JAN 2007 Stephen Dawson is set to return to the Mansfield squad for the first time in two months at Hereford on Saturday. The busy midfielder has not figured since early November with a painful back injury. But the Irishman played well over an hour of a reserve game at Leicester on Tuesday without any problems as the Stags lost 5-0. That has pleased boss Billy Dearden, who has been monitoring the 21-year-old's progress closely. "Considering he has not played for a couple of months, he came through his 65 or 70 minutes well," he said. "He has done enough to be in contention for Saturday and could be in my final 16." Although Mansfield were well beaten by City in the end, Dearden was pleased with what he saw from his side. He said: "For the first half we more than matched them and went in at half-time at 0-0, even though they played a strong side with nine of them having had Championship experience. "We made a couple of defensive mistakes in the second half and were punished. We also change things round and tried things towards the end, which helped them to some late goals." |
