GUS Uhlenbeek is keen to make the most of a short-term deal with Halifax Town.
The 35-year-old Surinam-born player arrived at the Shay last week, making his debut as a late substitute when he replaced Tyrone Thompson in Saturday's defeat to Grays.
And despite having played at the highest level during spells with Ipswich Town, Bradford City and Sheffield United, he is delighted to have been handed the chance to extend his career in the Conference.
"I am grateful to Halifax Town for giving me the opportunity to come here," said Uhlenbeek, who can play in midfield or defence.
"I am 35, but I am still fit and just want to play for as long as I can.
"What I have seen here - the facilities and the fitness work they are doing - has impressed me. They are doing it the right way."
Uhlenbeek was a victim of the restricted finances at the lower end of the Football League last May when he was released by Mansfield.
He waited for the phone to ring, but not until last week did the right offer come along - from the Shaymen.
"I enjoyed it at Mansfield last season and played a lot of games," said Uhlenbeek, who has also played for Walsall, Chesterfield, Wycombe and Fulham in a 10-year career in England.
"I had a word with the manager but his budget was being cut and he had to release a lot of players. I was one of them."
"The longer the summer goes on, the bigger the gamble becomes and it is getting tighter and tighter each year.
"This is the first time I have had such a long close season. I just love the game and this is a chance for me."
