LIFELINE FOR BEARDSLEY
Evening Post, 27 June 2006
Forgotten man Chris Beardsley has vowed to pay back Peter Shirtliff for offering him a new one-year contract.

The striker missed nearly the whole of last season with an oblique fracture of his left leg suffered against Notts County last August.

But Shirtliff has stuck by the 22-year-old and given him the chance to prove himself. The deal is expected to be signed this week, with the players set to report back for pre-season training on Thursday.

"The gaffer sat me down a couple of times during the season and was pretty positive about things," said Beardsley.

"He said that while he was still at the club that I was the type of player he wanted to have around and that's nice to hear.

"But you never know in football and things can change day by day, so it was a relief to get the offer. What I have to do now is to concentrate on proving what I can do."

The move to offer Beardsley fresh terms - while eight others were released - came as a surprise to some Stags fans.

But Beardsley said: "It is only a one-year deal and I'm aware that I have something to prove.

"Shirty has told me that, if I score the goals, there will be an extension. It is down to me and I can score goals at this level."
