BARKER INTIMATES THAT HE WANTS A NEW DEAL
22nd May 2006 4:13

BARKER MAY GET NEW DEAL
EVENING POST, 13 Mai 2006
Mansfield star striker Richard Barker may have his contract extended, manager Peter Shirtliff has revealed.

Skipper Barker, 30, has been a revelation for the Stags, scoring 23 goals this season.

He also swept the board at the supporters' player of the year awards.

Barker has made 75 appearances, scoring 33 goals, since signing from Rotherham in November 2004.

The Sheffield-born player still has a year left on his contract but an extension would help to cool interest from other clubs keen to sign him.

Swansea and Grimsby were linked with Barker earlier this season, but Stags' manager Peter Shirtliff maintains that no approach was made - and the player is not for sale.

"An extension to Richie Barker's contract has been spoken about," said the Stags boss.

"He is happy, but he has intimated to me and the chairman he wants a new deal and it is something we are looking at.

"We've had a number of positives to come out of this season and Barker's goals and performances have been three of them."
