Youth Team Claim Win Against Mansfield
Monday 23rd January, 8:50am

Travis Morgan - Two Goals In Three Games

Notts County's Youth Team made it seven points from nine in 2006 on Saturday, thanks to a 2-0 win over local rivals Mansfield Town at Grove Farm.

After a slow start to the season in terms of results, the experience gained at the start of the season has held the team in good stead for the second half of the campaign, and despite not putting in the same sort of performances as at the start of the season, Steve Spooner's side are picking up results.

The win over the Stags was wrapped up courtesy of goals from Travis Morgan, his second in three games, and Seb Szondi before half time. Having suffered an FA Youth Cup loss to Mansfield earlier in the season, it was the perfect piece of 'revenge' for the youngsters.

On the victory, Spooner told nottscountyfc.co.uk: "We got another win which was pleasing, but the performance wasn't that great if we are totally honest.

"But, right now we are not playing as well as we were at the start of the season, but we are getting results.

"It's strange because we were playing so well at the start of the season but things weren't going our way for one reason or another.

"That experience has helped the lads, especially those First Year boys. Also, we have a number of players back from injuries such as Travis Morgan, and that is certainly helping us big time," he added.

The kids have a two week break before their next game on February 4 when they face York City at Highfields, so it would seem there's plenty of hard work on the training field ahead over the next few weeks in the build-up to the game to keep the players ticking over.

Steve Spooner - Seven New Scholars To Work With Next Season

Seven players from our Under 16's team at the Notts County Centre of Excellence have been offered scholarship forms - three months early.

Clubs are obliged to offer two-year scholarship forms to boys by March 1, but the seven boys have been offered their forms ahead of schedule. Centre's Staff Darren Heyes, John Gaunt, Darren Davis and Craig Gaunt recommended the players, and a final decision was taken up by Youth Team Coach Steve Spooner and the first team management staff.

And, we are delighted to announce that Ben Elliott, Ashley Holmes, Mark Dudley, Dave Rimmington, Adam Moran, Ewan Clarke and Shane Newton are the boys to be offered scholarships with us.

We would also like to thank those boys who have now left us from the Under 16's: Luke Gibbons, Ashley Mather, Max Pembleton, Paul Caldbeck, Josh Davies and Adam Campbell.
